California's Committee on Revision of the Penal Code will meet again next week, and we are once again encouraging residents, victims, survivors, advocates, and criminal justice partners across the state to tune in.
This meeting includes several significant issues:

โกSentence Review Regulations: A presentation from the California Board of Parole Hearings on regulations governing sentence review.
โกCosts of Incarceration and Elder Parole: A presentation examining the fiscal costs of incarcerating elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and those with significant medical needs.
โกDiscussion with Incarcerated Individuals: Committee members will hear directly from people who are incarcerated.
โก2026 Annual Recommendations: Review of proposed recommendations that may ultimately be presented to California's elected leadership and more.

The Committee on Revision of the Penal Code is tasked with studying California's criminal laws and recommending changes to the Governor and Legislature. Its work can influence future policies involving sentencing, incarceration, parole, probation, and other aspects of the criminal-justice system. These are conversations that communities and survivors should understand and have an opportunity to participate in โ particularly when the recommendations being considered may affect sentences, accountability, community safety, and the rights of crime victims.
Because some of the most consequential criminal-justice policy conversations happen long before legislation reaches the Capitol.
California's Constitution guarantees victims specific rights under Marsy's Law, including rights relating to notification, participation, safety, and the opportunity to be heard in applicable criminal-justice proceedings. As state leaders examine sentencing structures, clemency, parole, and incarceration policies, it is important for victims and survivors to understand what is being proposed, how these discussions may affect their rights, and whether their perspectives are being considered.
The Placer County District Attorneyโs Office believes survivor perspectives are equally important to understanding the real-world consequences of criminal-justice policy.
