There’s currently a large wildfire burning in the area of MP 51 I-5 and the city of Rogue River. Multiple fire agencies are on scene with more resources on the way. Drivers should avoid the area if at all possible.

🔥 RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT TODAY 🔥

Southern Oregon continues to experience hot, dry, and windy conditions, creating an elevated risk for rapidly spreading wildfires. These conditions are expected to continue through tomorrow, making today and the next 24 hours especially critical for wildfire prevention.

At Grants Pass Fire & Rescue, we’ve increased our readiness by placing our Type-3 Heavy Brush Engine in service with a dedicated three-person crew. This additional staffing enhances our ability to respond quickly and aggressively to vegetation fires while maintaining emergency coverage throughout our community.

How You Can Help Prevent Wildfires:

🚭 Never discard ci******es or smoking materials on the ground or from a vehicle.
🚗 Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass or vegetation—hot exhaust systems can ignite fires.
🔥 Postpone activities that create sparks, including grinding, welding, or using equipment in dry vegetation.
🌿 Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 9-1-1.

Beat the Heat:

💧 Stay well hydrated—even before you feel thirsty.
🧢 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
🚙 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
🤝 Check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

While our firefighters are staffed, equipped, and ready to respond, the best wildfire is the one that never starts. A little extra caution today can help protect our homes, our natural resources, and our firefighters.

Please stay aware of changing conditions, make smart choices outdoors, and help us keep Grants Pass safe.

This week, Grants Pass Fire Rescue hosted a 32-hour Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification course at the Parkway Fire Station. The course prepares students to properly install child safety seats and educate caregivers on the correct selection and use of car seats - helping keep our youngest passengers safe every time they ride.

Seventeen students completed the course, including nine Grants Pass firefighters who are now certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Their training expands our department's ability to provide this important community risk reduction service to local families.

As a reminder, Grants Pass Fire Rescue hosts child safety seat distribution and inspection events every other month at the Hillcrest Fire Station. Families can have their current car seats inspected or, for those who qualify through programs such as WIC or the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), purchase reduced-cost child safety seats.

We are incredibly grateful to OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital and ODOT for their continued partnership and support in making this valuable program possible. Together, we're helping ensure more children travel safely on the roads throughout our community.

** Update. Units are reporting that the fire is under control. The road will remain closed as units complete extensive overhaul. **

Units are currently on scene of a structure fire in the 2000 block of Fruitdale. Fruitdale is currently closed between Rogue River Hwy and Mt. Baldy Rd. Please avoid the area.

Neighborhood Wildfire Grant Canvassing Postponed Due to East Evans Fire Activity

Grants Pass, OR — Grants Pass Fire is notifying residents that the neighborhood canvassing planned for Saturday, July 18th, as part of our community wildfire‑mitigation grant program, has been postponed.

This decision comes in response to ongoing fire activity related to the East Evans Fire in Jackson County, which is currently requiring regional attention and resource support. Our crews and partner agencies are actively engaged in operations to ensure community safety, and postponing non‑essential activities will help maintain focus where it is most needed.

A new date for neighborhood canvassing will be announced once conditions stabilize and staffing levels return to normal. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we prioritize urgent fire‑response efforts.
