VA Plans to Outsource All Compensation and Pension Exams

The Department of Veterans Affairs is eliminating its in-house compensation and pension exam program and will outsource all of the exams, which are crucial to determining whether veterans are eligible for VA benefits. The change comes as the VA is working through a backlog of requests for exams. The department suspended the exams in April, as coronavirus cases grew across the United States. During that time, the backlog grew to about 350,000

In a letter to VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., said the plan was developed with no notice to Congress.

MISSING IN ACTION (MIA) MAY 19, 1967 - AUG 7, 2019:

After 52 years, the remains of Air Force pilot Col. Roy Knight Jr., who was shot down in 1967 during the Vietnam War, has finally come home.

And the plane that carried them, a commercial jet owned by Southwest Airlines, was flown by Knight's son Bryan Knight, a captain with the airline.

The remains arrived Thursday in a flag-draped casket at Dallas Love Field (Dallas Texas) — the same airport where Col. Knight said goodbye to his then-5-year-old son.

Col Roy Knight's service with full military honors was held 50 miles west of Dallas in Weatherford, Texas.

Rest In Peace, Welcome Home!

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1513 are sad to share the news of the passing of WWII hero, Fiske Hanley at 100 years of age. Fiske served on a B29 bomber flying missions over Japan when his aircraft was shot down. He was taken as a prisoner of war, being held at one of the most brutal camps in Japan. On August 29, 1945 he was released from the camp and able to return home to his family.

Fiske continued working to support our nation in many ways throughout his amazing life, always with a smile, and impacting all those he met.

The Chapter will always be grateful for all the memories and moments we were able to share together with Fiske over the years. He was a true patriot, he will be sincerely missed, and was loved by so many. May he rest in peace, and God Bless the Hanley family during this sad and difficult time.

National Purple Heart Day: Purple Heart Day is observed on August 7th each year and is a time for Americans to pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who were either wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

National Purple Heart Day: Purple Heart Day is observed on August 7th each year and is a time for Americans to pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who were either wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

August 7, 1782 is the day when: at his headquarters in Newburgh, New York, General George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, creates the “Badge for Military Merit,” a decoration consisting of a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk, edged with a narrow binding of silver, with the word Merit stitched across the face in silver. The badge was to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action” and permitted its wearer to pass guards and sentinels without challenge. The honoree’s name and regiment were also to be inscribed in a “Book of Merit.” Washington’s “Purple Heart” was awarded to only three known soldiers during the Revolutionary War: Elijah Churchill, William Brown, and Daniel Bissell, Jr. The “Book of Merit” was lost, and the decoration was largely forgotten until 1927, when General Charles P. Summerall, the U.S. Army chief of staff, sent an unsuccessful draft bill to Congress to “revive the Badge of Military Merit.” In 1931, Summerall’s successor, General Douglas MacArthur, took up the cause, hoping to reinstate the medal in time for the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth.

On February 22, 1932, Washington’s 200th birthday, the U.S. War Department announced the creation of the “Order of the Purple Heart.” In addition to aspects of Washington’s original design, the new Purple Heart also displays a bust of Washington and his coat of arms.

The Purple Heart is the oldest American military decoration for military merit, is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been killed or wounded in action against an enemy. It is also awarded to soldiers who have suffered maltreatment as prisoners of war.

I just got the email about Jon passing away on January 9th. He was a great American and will be missed. He was so very welcoming to me and my family when we moved to the DFW area in 2015. His leadership at the MOPH was the reason we remained so active while we lived there. 💜🇺🇸
A Silent Salute by the Massachusetts MOPH and VFW.
A great day of brotherhood with my fellow Patriots from around Texas! After risking life and limb to secure the curtain and make it look good, we were told we hung it wrong. It should have been 90° counterclockwise. It still looks good, Gus.
