This week your City firefighters, along with other local fire departments, came together for our annual confined space rescue drill. Training for the low-frequency, high-risk emergencies that require precision, teamwork and specialized skills.

Confined space incidents can happen in places like tanks, vaults, tunnels, silos and industrial sites where access is limited and hazards can quickly become life-threatening. These trainings help ensure our crews are prepared to safely rescue victims while protecting our firefighters in some of the most challenging environments we face.

Throughout the week, firefighters trained on rope systems, air monitoring, patient packaging, communication and coordinated rescue operations in realistic scenarios.

A huge thank you to Hansen Bros. Enterprises for generously allowing us to use their facility all week and supporting regional training efforts. Partnerships like this help keep our responders prepared and our communities safer.

⚠️ With the current windy conditions, your City firefighters are responding to multiple calls for downed power lines and electrical hazards throughout the City and surrounding areas. Please use extra caution while traveling today.

Strong winds can also bring down trees, branches and create dangerous roadway conditions. Slow down and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

Your firefighters and partner agencies are actively working to keep the community safe.

Community Connection in Action! πŸš’πŸš‘πŸš“

Today, your City firefighters had a great time hosting Little Seeds Preschool for a fun and interactive public education event! We talked with the kids about fire safety, what to do in an emergency and helped make learning about first responders a little less scary and a lot more exciting.

A big thank you to our amazing partners at Grass Valley Police, Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and Sierra Nevada Ambulance for joining us. The kids loved seeing all the cool equipment and meeting the people who help keep our community safe every day.

Opportunities like this are what community risk reduction is all about - building trust, sharing knowledge and having a little fun along the way.

Thanks again to Little Seeds Preschool for joining us!

We’re proud to recognize three of our own for their outstanding service to the community.

The Lake Wildwood Association recently presented a Life Saving Award to Captain Cisneros, Firefighter Greer, and Firefighter Davis for their heroic efforts during a medical emergency on the Wildwood Golf Course in Penn Valley.

Their quick actions, teamwork, and commitment to patient care made a critical difference in a life-threatening situation. This is a powerful example of the dedication our firefighters bring to every call, every day.

Please join us in congratulating your firefighters on a well-deserved recognition!

Passing of Firefighter and Volunteer Fire Marshal Bill Wood

With great sadness, the Grass Valley Fire Department announces the passing of Firefighter Bill Wood on April 17, 2026, at the age of 85.

Bill joined the department in 1961 and quickly became a valued member of Company #1, rising to the position of Rescue Squad Captain. Bill began taking Fire Marshal courses through the California State Fire Marshal’s Office and through his dedication and commitment to community safety, he became the first Certified Volunteer Fire Marshal in California, proudly holding badge number 1.

Bill later served as Assistant Chief from 1973 to 1974 and retired after 23 years of service to the Grass Valley community.

Outside of the fire service, Bill worked for the United States Postal Service before purchasing and operating a Phillips 66 service station on South Auburn Street, continuing his tradition of serving the local community in another important way.

Bill and his wife, Sandy, later moved to Idaho and eventually to La Pine, Oregon, to be closer to family.

A traditional bell-ringing ceremony will be held in his honor on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Race Street Fire Station. The department welcomes those who wish to attend and join us in recognizing Bill’s service and legacy.

What a weekend! 🌧️⚑️

The recent storms kept your City firefighters busy responding to a wide range of calls across our community. Incidents ranged from structure fires (even one in the snow!) to electrical emergencies, flooding and more.

We’re thankful for the teamwork between all local agencies, helping us handle each situation efficiently.

Thank you to our community for the ongoing trust and support!
