🚒 Grass Valley Fire Department Update

E2, E1, and B1 are currently assigned to a vegetation fire on the backside of Alta Sierra. While our crews are working alongside other agencies to help contain the incident, your Grass Valley Fire Stations remain staffed and ready to respond to calls within our communities.

We’d also like to thank our partners at Penn Valley Fire and Linda Fire Department Marysville Fire Department, CA for providing additional resources to help maintain coverage for the two cities. 🤝

For the past 10 days, one of our engines has been deployed as part of an OES Strike Team on the Grasshopper Fire, working in and around the Mount Hood National Forest.

Our four-person crew has been working alongside partner agencies Lodi Fire Department Turlock Fire Department Modesto Fire Department Stockton Firefighters Mokelumne Rural Fire District to help protect homes, structures, and communities in the fire area. They have approximately four more days on assignment before beginning their journey home.

While our crew is away, our stations have remained fully staffed and ready to serve the community. We’re incredibly proud of the dedication and professionalism of our personnel.

We are looking forward to welcoming our crews home safely after their deployment. At the same time, we recognize that our return home is only a small part of a much larger story. The enormity of the tragedy and devastation being experienced by people across Oregon, Washington, and communities throughout the western states is not lost on us.

Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by these fires — those who have lost homes and property, those who have been displaced, and the communities working tirelessly to recover. We wish them strength, a speedy recovery, and a safe return to normalcy.

We are proud to stand alongside our fellow firefighters and emergency responders during this difficult time, and we remain grateful for the opportunity to serve.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the Push-In Ceremony for our new Engine 1!

We were honored to share this special milestone with our community as we officially welcomed our newest fire engine into service. The ceremony included the long-standing fire service tradition of giving the engine a ceremonial wash, followed by firefighters and community members working together to “push” the engine into the station—symbolizing its readiness to serve.

We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our residents, elected officials and neighboring agencies. The partnership and encouragement make it possible for us to continue providing the highest level of service to the Grass Valley community.

Today, your Grass Valley / Nevada City Firefighters assisted the Penn Valley Fire with a residential structure fire in the Station 43 response area.

Our crews were assigned to vertical ventilation, working alongside our regional partners to support fire suppression efforts and improve conditions for interior crews.

While our community was sleeping, your City Firefighters were answering the call.

Late last night, Brush 5 was deployed as part of the Nevada County Strike Team to the Gann Fire in Calaveras County to assist with wildfire suppression efforts. The fire is currently estimated at approximately 6,500 acres and 0% contained.

Representing our department on this assignment are Firefighter Driscoll, Firefighter Dupzyk, Captain Tomlinson, and Firefighter Rohrer (pictured left to right).

While these firefighters work to protect lives and property across California, all Grass Valley and Nevada City Fire stations remain fully staffed and ready to respond to emergencies here at home.

Join the Grass Valley Fire Department as we officially welcome our new Engine 1 into service!

The community is invited to Fire Station 1 for a traditional push-in ceremony, a fire service tradition dating back to the days of horse-drawn equipment, when firefighters had to push the apparatus into the station by hand.

Come meet your local firefighters, get an up-close look at the new engine, and help us carry this historic tradition forward by pushing Engine 1 into its new home.

Over the past seven days, your Grass Valley and Nevada City firefighters responded multiple times to reports of a kitten trapped in a storm drain. Despite several responses, crews were unable to confirm that an animal was actually inside.

Last night, firefighters were dispatched once again and found an animal rescue organization already on scene attempting to safely trap the kitten. Because of the hazardous location and the potential for a dangerous atmosphere inside the storm drain, it was not safe for rescuers to enter the confined space.

Working together with Grass Valley Public Works, the Grass Valley Police Department, and Grass Valley Animal Control, personnel developed a safe rescue plan. Thanks to the teamwork and coordination of everyone involved, the kitten was successfully rescued. Judging by the photo, it was more than happy to be in the arms of its new favorite fire captain.

While we’re thrilled with this happy ending, we’d also like to remind our community that storm drains, vaults, and other confined spaces can be extremely dangerous. These areas may contain hazardous atmospheres capable of causing serious injury or death. Please never enter these spaces—even when trying to rescue a person or an animal. Instead, call 911 so trained personnel with the proper equipment can respond safely.

The Grass Valley Nevada City Fire Department is proud to serve as Nevada County’s only dedicated Confined Space Rescue Team. Our members are specially trained and equipped to safely operate in these hazardous environments, and we’re always ready to help when the need arises.

We’re grateful for the teamwork that made this rescue possible and are excited to celebrate such a positive outcome for one very lucky kitten. 🐈❤️🚒
