Tom Fitzsimmons and Jerry Cirino started today’s ON THE TOWN like two brothers reuniting after a dozen years of separation. The two fondly explaining why Cirino’s has been a family favorite for dining excellence, attention to every detail, all while maintaining its down-home friendly atmosphere. Cirino’s enjoys preparing and the service of its fine foods, wine, and cocktails to the families of Nevada County. Reservations not required, however recommended, 530-477-6000.

Today’s NCLFC ON THE TOWN guests were annual favorites. Paul Cummings, Nevada County Office of Emergency Services along with Allen Schafer, a twenty-plus year veteran of orchestrating the Counties Safety/Health and Fire Protection Carnival. Paul and Allen have worked together for years ensuring an extraordinarily successful event. There will be no shortage of games, BBQ, snacks, entertainment, and important exhibits. This year’s Carnival is Saturday, May 4th 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

As always, for kids. Oh! and parents too...

Wonderful program today. Consolidated Fire Chief Patrick Sullivan was introduced by NCLFC Associate Board member, Tom Vallee. Incidentally, Tom is a retired Fire Chief of the Ross Valley fire district. Our KNCO ON THE TOWN, M.C. and “master of the Mic,” Tom Fitzsimmons shares the same professional enthusiasm displayed by Chiefs Sullivan and Vallee for their admiration for our county’s firefighting personnel. Chief Sullivan also stated his department’s morale and sense of duty excellence remains extremely high. Due in some part to Chief Jason Robitaille and new procedures in place. A wonderful place to work as a team. The chief went on to announce his appreciation to the Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council for its financial assistance in the construction of the new helipad at station 84.

NCLFC’s largest fund raiser, the Red-Light Ball, is April 13th and approaching rapidly. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. To date Our Red and Blue light sponsors include:

ZION CAPITAL, BUDGET BLINDS OF GRASS VALLEY, TRIPPS AUTO BODY AND PAINT, BRIAN HOLLISTER STATE FARM INSURANCE, OWENS ESTATE AND WEALTH MANAGEMENT, TRISH MORELAND REAL ESTATE, MIKE BRATTON STATE FARM INSURANCE, THE MIKE AND EVELYN WALSH FOUNDATION, and GRASS VALLEY PROVISIONS. We all appreciate and thank our generous sponsors and friends.

Ryan Cirino filled in for Jerry and announced the winner of Cirino’s “Kiss the Cook Contest,” Brian from Reno, will enjoy dinner for two next time he is in Grass Valley. Congratulation Brian.

BTW, enjoyed Cirino’s Calamari appetizer today at lunch. Try it, sensational! But first call for reservations, 530-477-6000

Once again, We appreciate the generously of our sponsors, Cirino’s at Main Street, KNCO’s fine staff, and of course our guests for their time, expertise, and participation.

Today's KNCO Radio "On the Town" program was hosted by Nevada County Law Enforcement & Fire Protection Council President Lorraine Jewett, who interviewed Nevada County Consolidated Fire Chief Jason Robitaille and Penn Valley Fire Protection District Chief Don Wagner.
What began as an effort to salvage fire and rescue services in Rough & Ready when that fire district became insolvent has evolved into a merger of the three districts that will be called the Nevada County Fire & Rescue District. Jason and Don explained there are still a few obstacles to hurdle, including securing sustainable long-term financial resources. Another task will be bringing the new agency into compliance with National Fire Protection Association standards, which will require hiring additional staff to meet standards that recommend 15 firefighters per firefighting response and three firefighters per engine.
Lorraine announced that tickets to the 23rd Annual Red Light Ball will be available next week at the NCLFC's website: www.NCLawAndFire.org. Tickets for the April 13 gala at the Nevada City Elks Lodge are $125, and first responders pay half-price. The elegant, catered event will feature the presentation of the NCLFC Public Safety Commitment Awards and dancing to Banner Mountain Blues Band.
Today's radio show was once again graciously sponsored by Cirino's at Main Street, founded and co-owned by Jerry Cirino. Jerry recommended everyone plan ahead and make their Valentine's Day lunch or dinner reservations early (530) 477-6000. Jerry, the sage that he is, also suggested other days will work for a romantic lunch or dinner because "Valentine's Day is within one's heart."

NCLFC newest associate member, Tom Vallee (pronounced “valet”), was given a grand introduction by KNCO host Tom Fitzsimmons for becoming NCLFC/KNCO ON THE TOWN newest program coordinator. Tom Vallee will be working with county first responders, along with police and fire news makers. Over eight years ago the program was designated to highlight all positive aspects of our first responders. Tom Vallee is certainly the individual to continue this tradition. Welcome Tom!
As a retired Ross, CA. Fire Chief, Tom brings years of first responders experience, not only with his background, but as evidenced by today’s conversation with Tom Fitzsimmons. Amoungest topics discussed: Marin Measure C, a successful ballot measure passed by over 70.8% of the voters, creating the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority. This measure insures greater county wildfire protection. Something Nevada County should investigate. More information available google “Marin County Measure C.”
Instituting an in-house restaurant search, finding a Cirino to thank as the ON THE TOWN program sponsor, Tom Fitzsimmons located culinary master, Ryan Cirino, deep in Cirino’s kitchen. Ryan was preparing his next dining delights for today’s fortunate luncheon and evening diners. A friendly conversation ensued with Tom Fitzsimmons extending his appreciation for the wonderful Cirino’s staff coupled with the generously of the Cirino family. This generously makes programs like ON THE TOWN possible. To be a part of this award-winning dining experience, reservations are strongly recommended 530-477-6000.

Today’s ON THE TOWN sure set a grand example of how fortunate we are to be a part of Nevada County. Early this week a call went out to Deputy Police Chief, Steve Johnson, to be a part of ON THE TOWN to inform our valuable KNCO listeners of GVPD’s perspective of the past year and what the anticipated for 2024 and beyond. Label this ON THE TOWN as a “State of the City” because Chief Johnson brought in Grass Valley Fire Chief Mark Buttron and Steve’ “boss” Grass Valley Police Chief Alex Gammelgard. The three chiefs spoke about the past, present and future of Grass Valey. What today’s program attested; Nevada County, especially Grass Valley, we are gifted with competent leadership of the highest order. Thank you, Chiefs, for today’s informative ON THE TOWN.

Our gracious host, Jerry Cirino, stated Cirino’s is proud that every special event at Cirino’s is celebrated by all in the dining room. A sensational spot to share your event with the other diners as evidenced by a recent birthday party when the entire restaurant broke out in song. Cirino’s is noted not only for fine dining, but it is fun as well. To take part call for reservations; 530-477-6000.

We give great thanks to today’s participants, especially KNCO’s master of the mic, Tom Fitzsimmon for bringing out the best in everyone. Grand program! Thank you all.

KNCO’s and NCLFC’s final 2023 ON THE TOWN broadcast was a fitting tribute to Jerry Cirino, KNCO’s radio host Tom Fitzsimmons, and well known, lifelong Nevada County citizen Charlie Jakobs. Three beloved Nevada County institutions respected for their honesty, integrity, and hard work, all for the betterment of Nevada County. Host Tom Fitzsimmons took pride in introducing Charlie. The pair go “way back” into KNCO history, and it is clear they enjoy each other’s company. Many stories could have been reminisced, however both gents stayed on topic. Fire safety in the home, use caution with the burning of candles, coupled with an introduction of a home ‘fire suppression blanket.”

Jerry Cirino spoke, with appreciation, about his customers, family, and staff. Important to note, Cirino’s is still hiring for all positions. For that valuable job interview and/or the sought-after dining reservation 530-477-6000. Bon Appetit!

As 2023 is winding down, it is time to extend our sincere gratitude to... Cirino’s for the generous hours of sponsorship allowing the Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council to be a part of KNCO’s ON THE TOWN program each week. (Not only for 2023 but the previous eight plus years!) Also, we need to mention Nevada County Broadcasters, radio station KNCO and especially Tom Fitzsimmons for his years of radio professionalism. “He sure makes everything look easy...” All our sensational NCLFC 2023 guests, especially this week’s guest, Charlie Jakobs. Charlie sets a high bar for radio enthusiasm; he also gives the listeners excellent fire safety advice along with Nevada County history in a manner enjoyed by all.

Here is the best 2024 has to offer us all. Most importantly, Thank you.

Higgins Fire Protection District was well represented ON KNCO’s ON THE TOWN with Fire Chief Jerry Good, who just retired after 41 of service, and the newly minted Fire Chief Joel Tam. In 1997, the year after Joel graduated from Bear River High School he became a Higgins’ Fire volunteer, thus the start of a sensational public service career. Through these years Joel worked alongside veteran Jerry Good. During the program both gentlemen displayed a devotion for the department, producing that special camaraderie found in first responders that depend on each other for their safety, success, and friendships.
Our KNCO Host, Tom Fitzsimmons, brought to the attention that NCLFC’s RED LIGHT BALL is upcoming in the early second quarter of 2024. April 13th to be exact. So be prepared to help with generous sponsorships.
Jerry Cirino told of his love for Nevada County and the so many friendships that have been developed since Cirino’s inception. In forty plus years Cirino’s has been offering quality and service to the people of Nevada County. Jerry urged the KNCO listeners to explore downtown Grass Valley. He also suggested making reservations for Cirino’s fine dining. 530-477-6000.
As 2023 is winding down a special appreciation is extended to The Cirino family, staff, and customers for sponsoring KNCO’s weekly ON THE TOWN along with their unshakeable support for the first responders of Nevada County.

Thursday, December 7, 2023

Appreciation must be acknowledged to our NCLFC board member, Buckley Armacher, for orchestrating today’s excellent program.

Today’s ON THE TOWN featured Peardale-Chicago Park Fire District’s thirty-nine-year veteran, Chief Jim Bierwagen and the district’s newest Fire Engineer, ten-year member, Daniel Ramey.

Important news: Voters of the Peardale-Chicago Park Fire District passed “a benefit assessment” this past November with a 75% approval. This foresighted assessment allows the Fire District to increase its responding capabilities by hiring two full time Fire Engineers along with two seasonal firefighters. This past election marks a great example of citizens coming together for the community’s benefit, protection, and safety.

Volunteers fire personnel are always encouraged. Buckley reminisced about his years as an Ophir Hills Fire District volunteer. A rewarding and occasionally time-consuming way to give back to the community.

Tom Fitzsimmons, KNCO’s Host and Master of the Mic, acknowledged and thanked Jerry and Donna Cirino for their marvelous MILL STREET MINUTE. This segment, broadcast each day on KNCO, has been a highlight for our Grass Valley merchants, customers and KNCO listeners.

Throughout the year, Cirino’s suggested reservations. However, due to the crowds during Cornish Christmas, no reservation required. Smart way to beat the crowd and enjoy Cirino’s fine dining experience. Come into Cirino’s, should there be a wait, put your name on the waiting list, go out do a bit of shopping, Cirino’s will call you when your table is ready. “Just high tail it back” to Cirino’s and enjoy your holiday feast.

To Cirino’s family and staff, and to our ON THE TOWN participants, thank you all so very much for all you do for our Nevada County community.

Buon Natale

Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council President Lorraine Jewett hosted this week’s radio program with guests Jason Robitaille and Don Hoffler. Jason is chief of the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and Don is co-owner of Robinson Enterprise Inc.

NCC Fire is installing a landing zone for helicopters behind Station 84 in Nevada City, and Robinson Enterprise is doing the dirt and aggregate work. The landing zone will reduce response times during emergencies that require hoist and helicopter maneuvers, such as rescues from the steep Yuba River Canyon.

The pad is now fully functional and will be improved with a paved road as money allows. The initial work was funded by a $15,000 grant from the NCLFC. Kudos to Robinson Enterprise for doing the work at a greatly reduced rate, in part because Don understands the importance of this life-saving project: he is a former fire chief!

The KNCO radio show was once again hosted by and at Cirino’s at Main Street. Ryan Cirino emphasized the importance of making reservations during the holiday season for those who want to enjoy any of the 70 delicious menu items.

To date, the NCLFC has donated more than $1.1 million in equipment and training to local first responders. The nonprofit’s next fundraiser is the Red Light Ball on April 13 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge. Tickets will be available after the first of the year at www.NCLawAndFire.org. For sponsorship opportunities of this social event of the season, contact any NCLFC Board member or leave a message on the NCLFC website. You may also telephone 916-800-2363 and leave a message for Treasurer Buckley Armacher.

Today’s ON THE TOWN could be referenced as “replacement day.” KNCO’s very entertaining host, Moe Howard, filled in for our regular KNCO host and master-of-the-mic, Tom Fitzsimmons. Also, adding a touch of class, Donna Cirino, the beauty within the background of Cirino’s, did a marvelous job representing Cirino’s and touting the other restaurants and business of Grass Valley. If change is sometimes necessary today’s OTT was a wonderful way to change into the holiday season.

It was he, our guest, Charlie Jakobs, who performed the first remote live broadcast on KNCO. In 1987, via a Ham radio hook-up, Charlie was able to report from the Dog Bar Fire.

Within these past thirty-six plus years Charlie has done so many radio programs from Cirino’s, he feels very much part of the Cirino family.

With Thanksgiving a week away, Charlie cautioned listeners. “Use extreme caution if placing the turkey into the container of hot boiling oil”. Do this outside of the kitchen over a concrete or dirt floor. When placed in the hot boiling oil, the cold turkey will create a thermal reaction, minor explosion, that usually results in a house fire. Again, this method should only be done outside thus avoiding unintended guests from your local fire department.
Representing NCLFC, Board member and the much celebrated “Best Attorney in Nevada County,” Cameron Brady. Cameron mentioned NCLFC next fundraiser The Red-Light Ball scheduled on Saturday, April 13, 2024. More information at NCLAWANDFIRE.ORG. Cameron proudly stated NCLFC has been able to raise over 1.2 million dollars in donations, all of which has been used to purchase much needed equipment for our county first responders. In just using the word “proudly” it was apparent all four of today’s participants are proud of Nevada County and their personal history within. All the makings added for a wonderful ON THE TOWN.

As we near the upcoming Holidays and to enjoy the Cirino’s ambience, it becomes more important to make reservations, 530-477-6000. Enjoy Cirino’s excellent food and service, then stroll Mill Street and do a bit of Downtown Grass Valley shopping.

We all join in with appreciation for the Cirino’s family and staff, always making us feel at home. In fact, if you are at Cirino’s, welcome home!

Thank you, Donna, Charlie, Cameron, and Moe, for your participation in creating today’s enjoyable and informative ON THE TOWN.

Happy Thanksgiving to All
