Just wanted say Happy Belated Mother's Day to all the mothers who chose life and did not abort their babies. Remember what mom said " I have never consider any one of my children to be a burden, I considered each one of my 12 children to be a blessing. Your children truly are a blessing to you!

Life moves on in ways we do not always comprehend. Marion House will always hold a warm memory in my heart mixed with the sadess of its end. I have been healing and hibernating and working like crazy. In June I realized that it would take 6 graduate credits to re-instate my school psychologist license. So if I wanted to get a job in August this meant completing them fast! In two months I completed 6 graduate credits and got A's in all three classes. So I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I am thrilled to be a part of the Fond du Lac School district as a School Psychologist. I love the concepts of Assessment for Learning and the PBIS goal to create safe schools by teaching students to be respectful and responsible!!!
I have just purchased a house in Fond du Lac and am looking forward to closing on January 9th. It is high on a hill overlooking rolling hills. I have .71 acres of land with no one immediately close to me. Adjacent to me is a field of wild flowers. I know it is just a hill but to me it is a mountain and I intend to have it become "prayer mountain". Needed to leave Green Bay to heal. It has a sauna and is beautiful! Please know that I still want to be a support to you all! Would love to have you visit, just call. You all know the number, I kept it the same. Will not publish it here.
They seem to love and appreciate me in Fond du Lac and I have a lot of say with what I do as a school psychologist. I am happy. My dad died on December 5th. I lost my mom 2.5 years ago, my sister 1.75 years ago and now my dad. It certainly has been a time of sadness for me.
I have learned to trust in Jesus, I have learned to trust in God through it all. I am allowing myself to rest in His presence but will continue to be ready when He calls again!
Love you all and pray for my past staff, residents and VOLUNTEERS & DONORS. I never had a chance to say THANK YOU and that is what hurts the most! About now I would be preparing your year end statements. God bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello All Marion House past residents. We are thinking of starting a support group for young moms like a Facebook support group. Veronica Perez has suggested that this might be beneficial. Liz Catalano and Monica Zindler will moderate and offer suggestions but we would like your participation. Please simply like this idea if you think it would be helpful.

We are so thankful to all who made donations to make a Christmas party possible for the residents of the Marion House Apartments. It was certainly a fun day and we were so pleased that Santa was able to join us again this year! How exiting! This was the first year that were were joined by a resident's mentor and a family member and we were so blessed they were able to share this time with us all. This year the residents brought food to share and it was absolutely delicious. The party was a blast!

We will post more pictures as we are able.

In addition to these statistics, 1,159 youth learned skills to be better parents
through Maternity Group Homes funded by the Family and Youth Services Bureau in 2011. Marion House and Marion House Apartments are thrilled that we were able to contribute to these numbers! In 2011, Marion House served 30 moms through this program.

Student poverty remains high in Green Bay School District

About 60% of the student body in the Green Bay School District are economically disadvantaged. This is a great article about the rising poverty level and the struggles students face that live in poverty/are homeless.

The number of students living in poverty in the Green Bay school district hit an all-time high last school year, and as the academic year enters its second week, it looks like another record-setter.

"Today, and it breaks my heart to say it, finding a homeless person who has died of cold, is not news. Today, the news is scandals, that is news, but the many children who don't have food- that's not news. This is grave. We can't rest easy while things are this way...We cannot become starched Christians, too polite, who speak of theology calmly over tea. We have to become courageous Christians and seek out those (who need help most)."

Recent research suggests that pregnancy can have a significant impact on the educational outcomes of teen parents. By age 22, only about 50% of teen mothers have received a high school diploma, and teen fathers have a 25-30% lower probability of graduating from high school than their peers.

CDC VitalSigns - Preventing Repeat Teen Births

This month is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. Did you know that nearly 20% of teen pregnancies are repeat teen pregnancies (meaning a second or more pregnancy where birth is before the mother is age 20)? This statistic and many astounding others was found on the CDC website, see the link below. The three most important things that Health Care Providers and communities can do (per the website) are:
Health care providers and communities can:
-Help sexually active teen mothers gain information about and use of effective types of birth control.
-Counsel teens that they can avoid additional pregnancies by not having sex.
-Connect teen mothers with support services that can help prevent repeat pregnancies, such as home visiting programs.

Teen pregnancy and childbearing can carry high health, emotional, social, and financial costs for both teen mothers and their children.

As you may know here at Marion House we have two AmeriCorps members. Earlier this year, The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Corporation for National and Community Service announced the first ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service to be held on April 9, 2013. The intent of this day is to recognize the impact and tireless efforts of those serving in AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs across the country. Here in Green Bay, Mayor Jim Schmitt recognized the outstanding work of national service participants and volunteers. He presented a proclamation declaring Tuesday, April 9th as National Service Recognition Day in Green Bay! Thanks to all of the local volunteers and AmeriCorps members for all the hard work they do :)

In response to today’s earlier poll question, there are currently 986 identified homeless students in the Brown County School Districts. Included in this are 147 unaccompanied youth. The last Wednesday of every month serves as a snapshot of homelessness in Brown County. On Wednesday January 30th, 467 individuals were identified to be living in emergency shelters, transitional living programs or on the streets. While this number does not reflect the hundreds of adults and children currently doubled up with a family member or friend while waiting for room at a shelter, it does include 65 individuals identified by HUD as Chronically Homeless (continuously homeless for a year with a diagnosed disability), 29 military veterans, 140 with a diagnosed mental illness and 88 individuals who are victims of domestic violence. Homelessness is a complex issue and its numbers permeate into every school, church and neighborhood in our area. (A huge thank you to Tami Frea with New Community Shelter who compiles this data each month!)
