Remembering September 11

The terrorist attacks of 9/11 vividly demonstrated that freedom comes at a cost, but even out of the twisted steel and rubble, we will always stand ready to sacrifice in order to ensure our way of life prevails for future generations – the very way of life so many before us have fought and died to protect.

On Friday, Sept. 11, the Veterans of Foreign Wars encourages every American to join together as it remembers and reflects on a day that of tragedy that Americans will never forget.

Boy Scouts banned from planting American flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day due to coronavirus

This Saturday May 16, 2020, VFW Green Bay, WI - Post 2037 Noble-Straubel will be out at Ft. Howard Cemetery to prepare in honoring our veterans for Memorial Day.

We honor our Veterans because without the sacrifices of our fallen brothers and sister our great Nation would not be what it is today. Nothing can compare to the sacrifices they have made, but we do our best to honor them by placing the American Flag, that they swore to defend, next to their gravestone.

Our post will not let this pandemic stop us from honoring our brothers and sisters. We will be following social distancing guidelines.

Unfortunately, the Boy Scouts will not be able to help us like in years past because of COVID-19, but we look forward to having them join us again in the future.

A longtime Memorial Day weekend tradition to honor veterans is now canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but there are persisting calls to bring it back.

Our Story

These are just a few things we did last year 2017 and can’t wait for 2018! •$1,000.00 Festival Foods Gift Cards to Veterans for food on the table. •$1,000.00 in gas cards to help vets to a job interview, work, treatment, ect.•Replaced a toilet for a disabled Veteran. •Paid rent, utilities, storage, car parts, for vets. •Visit the nursing homes with vets on holidays for pinning of flags on them for their service, never forgotten. •Help out OnBroadway with events, The 4th Hooah, and the Desert Vets of Wi when asked. •Handing out “Poppies” on a freezing Packer Game •Flag Retirements at local businesses (proper way) Legislative Services: The location of our Washington, D.C. office allows us to monitor all legislation affecting veterans, alert VFW membership to key legislation under consideration and to actively lobby Congress and the administration on veterans' issues. National Legislative Service establishes the VFW's legislative priorities and advocates on veterans' behalf. By testifying at congressional committee hearings and interacting with congressional members, the VFW has played an instrumental role in nearly every piece of veterans' legislation passed since the beginning of the 20th Century. Everything we do on Capitol Hill is with the VFW’s Priority Goals and veterans' well-being in mind. With the strength of the more than 1.7 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary, our voice on the Hill cannot be ignored! Among the VFW's most recent and important legislative victories was making college education affordable for military service members with the signing of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and ensuring America's service members and veteran receive the care they deserve by passing the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act. Our 2017 Priority Goals: Budget: End budget sequestration and adjust outdated budget caps. Authorize VA to receive reimbursements from TRICARE and Medicare. Authorize public/private partnerships for VA’s infrastructure needs. Work Force Development and Accountability: Improve hiring authorities to recruit and retain a high quality workforce. Provide quality training programs for employees and managers. Quickly investigate, discipline and remove employees who underperform or endanger veterans’ lives. Health Care: Conducting demand/capacity analyses in each community. Consolidating VA’s community care programs into a single, integrated system. Modernizing VA’s scheduling system. Expanding current caregiver benefits to veterans of all eras. Strengthening VA and DOD mental health programs. Expanding gender-specific programs and competencies. Providing care and benefits to veterans and family members impacted by toxic exposures. Improving research for Traumatic Brain Injuries. Improving the review process for veterans with Other-Than-Honorable discharges. Preventing the increase of pharmaceutical co-payments. Compensation and Benefits: Reform the appeals process. Accept private medical evidence when processing disability compensation claims. Require treatment of presumptive conditions as a claim for disability compensation. Extend presumptive conditions for hearing loss, tinnitus, TBI and toxic exposures. Expand nursing home eligibility for all veterans. Increase burial allowances, expand marker medal-lion eligibility, and include spouses’ information on all headstones. Education, Employment and Transition Assistance: High quality and sustainable education benefits. Strong employment and training programs. Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment services throughout their lifetime. Small business development opportunities. Civilian credentials or academic credit for the professional training they receive during service. Government hiring and contracting opportunities. A national veterans treatment court advocate within VA. Homeless reintegration programs. Defense and Homeland Security: Halting the development and/or proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Fully fund and deploy a U.S. missile defense system. Securing America’s borders. Military Quality of Life: Preserve the integrity of TRICARE. Protect and improve on-base quality of life programs. Pass full concurrent receipt of military retirement pay and VA disability compensation. Eliminate the Survivor Benefit Plan/Dependency and Indemnity Compensation offset for surviving military retiree spouses. POW/MIA: Ensuring the POW/MIA Accounting mission is fully funded. Expanding partnerships with host nations and private/public organizations to achieve the fullest possible accounting of U.S. military personnel missing from all wars.

VIETNAM/LAOS CIA PILOT BOOK LAUNCH AT EAA OSHKOSH Neil Hansen began his aviation career as a pilot for Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. He spent more than a decade in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era as a captain for Air America, the CIA's airline that operated there during the Vietnam era and the 'Secret War' in Laos. Neil reveled in the risky flying that fed his adrenaline addiction. Upon returning to the States, unable to find work because of the glut of younger military pilots returning from Vietnam and unable to let go of the Air America exhilaration rush, he saw the profession he loved come to an end when his trajectory veered off course. Hansen, an Oshkosh resident, who has accumulated over 29,000 hours of flight time (9,000 hours in a combat zone), and Grosscup created "FLIGHT: An Air America Pilot's Story of Adventure, Descent and Redemption" which is scheduled to be released on March 1 (History Publishing Company). On March 17, the EAA Aviation Center Museum, 3000 Poberzny Road, Oshkosh, will host a book launch in their Founders' Wing Theater at 2:00P.M., which will include a presentation by Hansen and a book signing. This historical aviation narrative incorporates the pathos of a war zone, humor, and candid insight. Neil pulls the reader directly into the cockpit, onto dirt mountaintop landing strips, into the raunchy brothels of Laos, alongside his first toddling steps into Buddhism, aboard the plane he flew out of Cambodia hours before it fell to the Khmer Rouge, down the road of self-destruction and beside him as he regains a foothold on the path to integrity. "FLIGHT" will be available through major booksellers, amazon.com and the EAA Museum bookstore/gift shop. Hansen and Grosscup invite readers to check out their pages, Air America Historical Social Club and Flight: An Air America Pilot's Story of Adventure, Descent and Redemption.
