Med this young man back in Florida outside of Veterinary Clinic, which he was working at. I talked to him about the USARMY, and he joined. And when they say it's a small Army boy, do they mean it.. keep crushing out here... 🇺🇸

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Join us as we are celebrating by sharing stories of honorable Hispanic servicemen and women throughout the month. Today we salute Staff Sergeant Marcario Garcia as he was the first Mexican immigrant to receive the Medal of Honor. To learn more about Garcia, read below:

-Born in Mexico in 1920, Garcia’s family immigrated to the U.S. four years later. Garcia worked as a cotton farmer in Texas until the outbreak of World War II. He joined the U.S. Army voluntarily and was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division.

-On November 27, 1944, Garcia, the squad leader in his platoon, was engaged in fire against German troops near Grooshau. The platoon was unable to advance due to machine-gun fire, so Garcia took it upon himself to go alone; he destroyed two enemy emplacements and captured four prisoners, fighting through his wounds until they secured the enemy position.

-In 1945, Garcia was awarded the Medal of Honor.

-In 1947, Garcia became a U.S. citizen and received his high school diploma in 1951. He worked as a counselor for the VA for 25 years, and was buried with full military honors in 1972.
