Q: My principal said he would not recommend me for rehire. Can he do that?
A: A principal can recommend that a teacher not be renewed, but only a director of schools has authority to non-renew a teacher’s contract. Under the current law, a non-tenured teacher must receive written notice of non-renewal, or non-reelection, from the director or the director’s designee, and it must be received within five (5) business days after the last instructional day to be effective. Note, the General Assembly recently amended the non-renewal statute, changing both the time and manner of non-renewal notices; however, those changes will not become effective until next year, so watch TEA publications for updates. If you have questions about non-renewal, contact your UniServ coordinator or Association rep for assistance. 🍎 The TEA Advocacy Hotline supports local leaders and building representatives in answering member questions. If you have an employment-related question, please contact your building rep or UniServ coordinator.

Robertson County Education Association is pleased to present the Betty Sue Murphey scholarship, Valued at $1,000 and is open to a graduating senior of Robertson County, TN who is planning to major in education See your high school counselor for the application. Deadline is 3/25/21
Regarding the decision to open Robertson County Schools for all students five days a week: 1) advisory.com: "...new studies increasingly are suggesting that the number of people who are infected with the new coronavirus but don't exhibit symptoms of Covid-19 is higher than researchers previously understood." 40-45% of infected people have no symptoms, making temperature-taking a rather ineffective measure of identification. 2) Students will be on crowded school buses, largely negating mitigation efforts in classrooms. 3) According to The Scientific American, Covid 19 is probably an aerosol in addition to being spread by droplets, meaning it can travel 30 feet or longer instead of 6 and have a life outside the body for many more hours. 3) "All students in school five days a week" is an ignorant and naive idea for this situation and will result in positive cases almost immediately, endangering students, teachers, administrators and school staff. 4) Relying on a survey of parents and students rather than the advice of the vast majority of Tennessee doctors and medical professionals is, in their words, "insane" and "irresponsible". How many sick people will it take for you to realize how faulty your thinking is? Other districts are now taking a hybrid approach to reduce numbers of students physically present, using an alternate day system and other measures. Apparently Robertson County Schools are unable to think that far out of the old traditional box.
The deadline for the Betty Sue Murphey Scholarship valued at $1,000 has been extended until May 15th. If you are a graduating senior in Robertson County and plan to major in education please contact your guidance counselor for an application.
