BREAKING: Democrats deliver as Illinois Gov. Pritzker balances the budget for the 8th year in a row AND still secures huge support for working families!
While Donald Trump and congressional Republicans slash support for working people in favor of tax cuts for billionaires, Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker is proving what real governance actually looks like.
Pritzker’s administration balanced the state budget for the eighth consecutive time without raising taxes on working families, while also sending $400 direct payments to Illinois families who were kicked off SNAP by the Trump administration.
“Our state is in its strongest fiscal position in decades,” Democratic star said at a ceremony announcing the budget. “We have paid off the $8 billion backlog that we inherited … Our pension funded ratio is at its highest level in 17 years. Our rainy day fund has grown from near zero to $2.5 billion. And for four years in a row, we are running increasingly larger surpluses.
“That’s the first time that’s happened in the recorded history of our state.”
This is exactly how Democrats should lead right now. By example. As the federal government under Trump strips resources and creates chaos, strong Democratic governors are stepping up to protect working families, stabilize budgets, and deliver real results for their constituents.
When Pritzger arrived in Springfield in 2018, he inherited a mess and turned Illinois around with fiscal responsibility and targeted relief 10 consecutive credit rating upgrades, massive debt paydown, and historic surpluses.
Pritzker rectified a huge unfunded public pension debt, settled a massive backlog of unpaid bills, faced a junk-level credit rating and a smoke-and-mirrors budget process that counted on temporary fixes, borrowing, and skipped pension payments to artificially balance previous budgets.
Since taking office, Pritzker’s administration has paid down the bill backlog, passed consecutive balanced budgets, and achieved multiple credit rating upgrades from agencies like S&P, Fitch, and Moody's.
This is a far cry from Republican leadership across the country that has cruelly slashed the social safety net and gutted education to fund tax cuts for the rich. All the while gloating about it.
Democrats deliver balanced budgets and direct help for working people, and Gov. Pritzker is among the strongest examples of this success.
Congratulations to the people of Illinois! You are in good hands under your Democratic administration.
