We are trying to schedule a meeting to discuss ways to increase broadband accessibility to Carter, Wayne and Butler Counties. We need input from those who are community leaders, particularly those who are elected or other government officials, business leaders, non-profit or faith-based organization leaders, those who work with youth or minority groups, those who work in healthcare or education, and any other person in the community who has an interest in seeing great broadband access in their community.

Please let us know what date works best for us to have a live, in-person meeting to discuss this issue where lunch will be provided. We've created a Doodle Poll to allow you to vote on which days work best for you. Once we know which date is best, we'll create the registration link and circulate that so you can sign up and secure your place at this meeting.

Landowners lease roughly 35% of Missouri crop, pasture and woodland acreage to renters every year.
Rented acreage has increased in recent years as more land has transitioned to the next generation, interest rates have incentivized land investments and interest in carbon markets and working land conservation has grown. To provide information Missourians can use when negotiating land rental rates, MU researchers invite landowners, farmers, ranchers and hunters to participate in the 2021 Missouri rental rate survey. The survey collects rental agreement information for cropland, pasture, woodland hunting, building and facility rental, hay ground, livestock stocking rates and future expectations. The results will be published in the Missouri Agricultural Rental Rate Summary, which will be available at extension.missouri.edu and from county extension centers.
The anonymous survey takes five to 10 minutes to complete. bit.ly/MissouriRentalRates21

In my adventures on the hiking trails, I have failed to see any animals except squirrels. Of course, I am hiking in the middle of the day so not much game will be stirring. There are some animals I am glad I haven’t encountered. We have a presence of bear and wild hogs in Wayne County. Do you know what to do if you come in contact with one? Here’s some pointers from the Missouri State Parks and the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Bears:
• Enjoy observing bears from a distance through binoculars or a spotting scope.
• When hiking, stay on the trail and keep your group together.
• Make your presence known. Normal trail noises will let bears
know you are coming. Most bears will avoid humans.
• If you surprise a bear while hiking, do not run. Slowly back
away and watch the bear without making direct eye contact.
Leave the bear an escape route.
• If a bear should attack, fight back. Hit the bear in the nose
and eyes. Kick it as hard as you can.

Wild Hogs:

• Remain calm and move slowly away from the animal.
• Keep a safe distance and do not corner or provoke the animal.
• If you see adults with young piglets, leave them alone as they
are more dangerous in attempting to defend their young.
• A feral hog can be aggressive and have been known to attack
humans. But the greater risk is that of contracting diseases
from them.

At Sam A. Baker State Park, planning to take just a few pictures of interest, I found myself gazing at the Shut-Ins Trail and on a whim, decided to go a little ways down the path. Each curve of the trail enticed me to continue, leading me to wonder what could be around the next bend. I hadn’t planned to hike but what could go wrong?

Many things could have gone array but fortunately I returned safely. Here’s a few things to do before you head out:

Fill out a Trail Registration Card – a broken bone or a heart attack is possible when hiking. This information could save your life should a rescue team need to find you.

Hydration – Our Nutrition Program Associate, Angie Cook, says it’s essential to stay hydrated. Pre-hydrate by drinking at least 4 cups of water before a hike so you have less to carry. Then, a good rule of thumb is to plan for about 2 cups of fluid for every hour of hiking. So take some clean drinking water!

Energy – Climbing those steep trails can take a lot of energy so make sure you have something to help maintain your energy. It’s a little challenging to pack perishable food so opt for non-perishable foods that are lightweight and nutrient dense. Like the recipe we’ve provided. This recipe is one of many found in the new “Wayne County Cookin’” 4-H cookbook that will be arriving soon at the Wayne County Extension office.

NO BAKE ENERGY BITES

1 c. dry oatmeal
2/3 c. toasted coconut flakes
½ c. peanut butter
½ c. ground flax seed
½ c. chocolate chips
1/3 c. honey or agave nectar
1 T. chia seeds (optional)
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Cover and let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Roll into balls. Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to one week. Makes 20-25 on-inch balls.

University of Missouri Extension Wayne County Weekly Adventures!

Thank you for joining us on our Wayne County Extension Weekly Adventures! Last year we had you hunt for places of beauty and history around our great Wayne County. This year we want you to experience the fun and enjoy the challenge of what you can find to do while visiting our parks and recreational areas located here.

Not to be all talk, I took a hike. On a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon, I made my way along a trail by swimming holes, waterfalls, through an umbrella of trees, past wildflowers and up a steep mountainside. I began inspired, invigorated, and determined to reach the highlights of the trail. Two hours later, I returned sweaty, appreciative to have survived, and aware that I had started out unprepared. But the beauty and tranquility definitely made it worth the effort! Can’t wait to try a new adventure soon!

I learned a few pointers that I would like to pass along to you so you won’t make the same mistakes I did. Continue to follow the MU Wayne County Extension page to hear what they are and then add a comment of your own experience if you like.

Here’s a few pictures taken while I was on the trail. Do you recognize the place?
