I was grateful to attend the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance’s 60th Annual Banquet and help celebrate 60 years of service to South Omaha.

SONA has played an important role in supporting neighborhood advocacy, encouraging civic involvement, and making sure South Omaha voices are heard.

That kind of work matters.

Strong communities don’t just happen. They’re built through trust, service, collaboration, and people who care enough to stay involved in the work around them.

It was great to see residents, nonprofit leaders, local businesses, public servants, and community advocates recognized as part of SONA’s history and continued impact.

Congratulations to SONA, and thank you to everyone who continues working to support South Omaha’s neighborhoods.

I’m grateful to share that Lisa Wood, Member of the Papillion La Vista Board of Education, has endorsed my campaign for the Papio-Missouri River NRD Board, Subdistrict 10.

Lisa is someone who shows up for her community and understands why local government matters. Whether we’re talking about schools, infrastructure, growth, or natural resources, decisions made close to home have a real impact on families, neighborhoods, and the future of our area.

That’s a big part of why I’m running for the NRD. Flood protection, water quality, conservation, parks, trails, and responsible development may not always get the most attention, but they affect people’s daily lives and the long-term health of our communities.

I appreciate Lisa’s support and confidence in this campaign. I’m honored to have her endorsement.

I’m honored to have the endorsement of Marcus Madler, member of the Papillion La Vista Board of Education, in my campaign for Papio-Missouri River NRD Board, Subdistrict 10.

Marcus understands the importance of public service, responsible decision-making, and showing up for the communities we serve. His support means a great deal as this campaign continues to build momentum across Sarpy County.

The Papio-Missouri River NRD plays an important role in flood protection, water quality, stormwater management, conservation, trails, recreation areas, and planning for the long-term needs of growing communities. I’m running to bring steady, practical leadership to that work and to make sure decisions are made openly, responsibly, and with future generations in mind.

Thank you, Marcus, for your support and confidence in this campaign.

Pride Month is a reminder that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

It’s also a reminder that support has to mean more than words. It’s easy for companies, organizations, and public figures to wave a Pride flag in June, but real inclusion is measured by what we do when it matters.

That means standing with our LGBTQ+ neighbors, friends, students, families, coworkers, and community members — not just during Pride Month, but throughout the year. It means supporting safe schools, inclusive workplaces, fair policies, and communities where people can live openly and know they belong.

Inclusion matters. Action matters.

Happy Pride Month.

I’m honored to have the endorsement of Senator Margo Juarez in my campaign for Papio-Missouri River NRD Board, Subdistrict 10.

Senator Juarez represents District 5 in the Nebraska Legislature and serves on the Natural Resources Committee. Her work in that role connects directly to the issues at the heart of this campaign: protecting clean water, reducing flood risk, supporting responsible growth, and managing our natural resources with transparency and long-term stewardship.

I’m grateful for Senator Juarez’s support, her public service, and her commitment to issues that matter to Nebraska families and communities.

Thank you, Senator Juarez.

On Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend the Learning Community Center of South Omaha Annual Celebration.

It was a powerful reminder that education isn’t just about what happens inside a classroom. It’s also about supporting parents, strengthening families, building confidence, and helping children and adults move forward together.

This year’s celebration recognized families who have worked hard through programs like ESL, GED classes, parenting education, digital literacy, and other family learning opportunities. Seeing those achievements celebrated in person was special, because behind every certificate and every milestone is a family putting in the work to build a stronger future.

I also want to recognize the great work Nayeli Lopez and Anne O’Hara do for the Learning Community centers and the people they serve. Their leadership is visible in the work happening at the centers every day.

I was glad to attend alongside fellow Learning Community Coordinating Council members Mark Hoeger and Vice Chair Raquel Rodriguez. Events like this show why continued investment in children, parents, and family learning matters.

Thank you to the Learning Community Center of South Omaha team, OneWorld Community Health Centers, the educators, navigators, staff, partners, and families who make this work possible.

When parents are supported, children benefit. When families are connected to schools and community resources, the whole community grows stronger.

This week, I was in Washington, D.C. as part of my work with the Learning Community, joining CEO Gerald Kuhn and other education leaders for federal briefings, policy discussions, and conversations focused on education, early childhood, workforce development, data, privacy, and the federal appropriations process.

It’s easy for this kind of work to sound far removed from daily life back home, but it really isn’t. Federal decisions help shape the resources available to schools, early childhood programs, families, and communities. They affect how we support children before they enter kindergarten, how we help students stay on track, and how we prepare young people for college, careers, and the workforce.

During Nebraska’s state dinner at Carmine’s, I also had a chance to talk with Congressman Don Bacon and other Nebraska education leaders about the work happening across our state and the issues facing schools, families, and communities.

The trip also reinforced how much local voices matter in federal conversations. Policymakers need to hear from people working closest to families, schools, and communities. Local experience helps ground these discussions in real needs, real barriers, and real outcomes.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to listen, learn, and help make sure our local perspective is part of the conversation. I came home with a stronger understanding of how federal policy connects to the work we’re doing locally — and why showing up matters.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit the D2 Center and learn more about the incredible work they’re doing to support young people in Omaha.

The D2 Center’s work is personal to me. I struggled in high school, and I know how much it can matter when a young person has someone in their corner who believes they’re capable of succeeding. A program like this could have changed the trajectory of my life.

What stood out to me most is that this isn’t just about helping students get back on track academically. It’s about relationships, trust, persistence, and making sure students know they haven’t been written off.

The Youth Academic Navigators are doing meaningful, life-changing work by helping students reconnect with school, stay engaged, earn credits, and keep moving toward a diploma. That kind of support can open doors that might otherwise close too early.

Thank you to the D2 Center team, the Youth Academic Navigators, student participants, fellow Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy CountiesCouncil member Mark Hoeger, D2 Center board member Jerry Bexten, and Nayeli for the time, conversation, and insight.

I’m grateful for the visit and even more grateful that programs like the D2 Center exist in our community.

Today is Earth Day, and it’s a reminder that protecting our environment goes hand in hand with protecting our communities.

Clean water, flood protection, conservation, responsible growth, and stewardship of the land around us aren’t just policy issues. They affect public health, public safety, quality of life, and the future we leave behind.

That’s a big part of why I’m running for the Papio-Missouri River NRD Board. The decisions made there shape how we manage water, protect natural resources, and plan for growth in ways that serve the public good.

This year’s Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” and I think that fits local service well. Real progress happens when people stay engaged, pay attention to what’s happening in their communities, and step up to protect the places we all share.

On Earth Day, I’m thinking about the responsibility we have to care for our water, our land, and the public resources that belong to all of us.

Happy Earth Day.
