YOUR INSURANCE CARD DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT EVERYTHING IS COVERED

Having coverage and understanding your coverage are two very different things.

Many people do not learn the difference until they need a doctor, prescription, procedure, or hospital stay—and discover that the provider is out of network, prior authorization was required, or the service comes with a much larger cost than expected.

That confusion can lead to delayed care, denied claims, unexpected medical bills, or thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses.

Before you need to use your coverage, make sure you understand:

✅ Your deductible
✅ Your copays and coinsurance
✅ Your provider network
✅ Your prescription drug coverage
✅ Prior-authorization requirements
✅ Your maximum out-of-pocket limit
✅ What is—and is not—covered

Do not wait until a medical situation becomes urgent to start reading the details of your plan.

PlanSmart Insurance & Notary Services helps you understand your coverage in plain language so you can ask better questions and make informed decisions. Comment below thoughts below!

QUICK POLL FOR OUR SUNSHINES ☀️

Which healthcare cost concerns you the most?

🦷 Dental care
👓 Vision care
👂 Hearing aids and hearing care

These expenses can become a serious financial burden—especially when someone assumes their Medicare coverage will pay for more than it actually does.

Understanding what is covered, what is limited, and what may require additional coverage can help you prepare before an unexpected bill arrives.

A $0 PREMIUM DOES NOT MEAN $0 HEALTHCARE COSTS

During Medicare Annual Enrollment, it is easy to focus on the plan with the lowest monthly premium.

But the premium is only one part of the cost.

You also need to review the plan’s maximum out-of-pocket limit—often called the MOOP. This is the most you could pay during the year for covered Medicare Part A and Part B services under the plan.

Here is the uncomfortable but important question:

If your health changed next year, could your budget handle that amount?

Do not compare plans assuming you will remain perfectly healthy. Compare them based on what could happen if you need specialists, testing, outpatient procedures, rehabilitation, or a hospital stay.

Before choosing a plan, review:

• The maximum out-of-pocket limit
• Medical deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance
• Whether your doctors and hospitals are in-network
• Whether your prescriptions are covered and what they may cost
• Prior-authorization and referral requirements

Then work toward building a medical emergency fund based on the financial exposure you could realistically face.

A $0 premium may be attractive—but it should never be the only reason you select a plan.

Finding a prescription-assistance program is only the first step. Before calling or applying, gather the information that may be needed:

✓ A current list of your medications and dosages
✓ Your prescription insurance card
✓ The name and contact information for your pharmacy
✓ Your doctor’s contact information
✓ Household income information
✓ A list of the prescriptions creating the greatest financial strain

You may also want to ask:

• Does this program cover my specific medication?
• Are there income or insurance requirements?
• Will I need my doctor to complete any paperwork?
• How long does approval usually take?
• Will I have to reapply later?

Do not stop taking a medication or change how you take it because of the cost without first speaking with your doctor or pharmacist.

A little preparation can make the process feel less confusing and help you ask better questions.

If you are unsure where to begin, contact PlanSmart Insurance & Notary Services. We will help you understand the next step.

MEDICARE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT IS COMING. ARE YOU GETTING READY?

October will be here before we know it, and Medicare Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7.

Before you start looking at plans, start by looking at your life.

Has anything changed this year?

🩺 Doctors: Who are the doctors you want to continue seeing?

💊 Medications: What prescriptions are you currently taking? Write down the exact name, dosage, and frequency.

👩‍⚕️ Specialists: Are you seeing a cardiologist, oncologist, endocrinologist, or another specialist you need to keep?

🏥 Pharmacy: Do you have a preferred pharmacy?

📋 Health needs: Have there been changes in your health or care needs since you last reviewed your coverage?

Don't wait until October to start trying to remember everything.

Make your list now.

Having the right information in front of you can help you make a more informed decision when it's time to review your Medicare coverage.

At PlanSmart, we believe Medicare decisions should begin with understanding you—not just looking at a plan. Need our guidance comment "REVIEW" below or DM.

For many Georgia seniors, the problem isn't just the number of prescriptions they take.

It's what those prescriptions cost month after month.

Before assuming, “I just have to pay it,” find out whether assistance is available.

Georgia Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and resources may qualify for programs such as Extra Help, which can help lower Medicare Part D premiums, deductibles and prescription copayments.

There are also Medicare Savings Programs that may help eligible beneficiaries with certain Medicare costs.

And if you don't qualify for income-based assistance, there are other options worth investigating, including prescription discount programs.

The lesson: Don't stop taking a medication—or start cutting pills, skipping doses, or choosing between medicine and another bill—without first finding out what help may be available.

📌 PlanSmart Tip: Prescription assistance isn't automatic for everyone. Sometimes you have to ask, apply and provide financial information to determine whether you qualify.

Not sure where to begin?

PlanSmart can help point you toward the appropriate resources so you can ask the right questions.

Has healthcare started taking a bigger bite out of your monthly income?

For many people living primarily on Social Security or another fixed income, even a relatively small increase in monthly expenses matters.

Then add healthcare costs:

• Medicare Part B premiums
• Deductibles and copays
• Prescription drug costs
• Dental, vision or hearing expenses
• Unexpected medical bills

And suddenly the monthly budget feels much tighter.

Here's where I don't want you to make a mistake:

Don't automatically assume there is nothing you can do.

Depending on your individual situation, there may be programs, coverage options or other resources available that could help reduce some of your out-of-pocket costs.

Start by asking:

✔️ Do I understand what I'm currently paying for my healthcare?

✔️ Have my prescriptions or doctors changed?

✔️ Am I paying for benefits or coverage I don't fully understand?

✔️ Could I qualify for assistance with certain Medicare-related costs?

You don't have to become a Medicare expert.

But you do need to understand how your coverage affects your wallet.

Question: Do you know approximately how much of your monthly income is currently going toward healthcare?

If you're not sure where to start, I'm happy to help you understand the questions you should be asking.

⏰ YEAR-END REMINDER: Don't Forget About Your RMD

If you're required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your retirement account, don't let December arrive before you start thinking about it.

An RMD is generally the minimum amount the IRS requires certain retirement account owners to withdraw each year once the applicable rules apply to them.

Why does this deserve your attention?

Because missing a required distribution—or taking too little—can create an unnecessary tax problem.

Before year-end:

✅ Confirm whether an RMD applies to you.
✅ Verify which retirement accounts are affected.
✅ Find out how much must be withdrawn.
✅ Don't assume your withdrawal automatically happened.
✅ Speak with your financial or tax professional if you're unsure.

And remember: taking money from a retirement account can have tax consequences, so don't wait until the last few days of the year to start asking questions.

Planning ahead gives you time to understand your options instead of reacting to a deadline.

Georgia Seniors: Don't Overlook Property Tax Savings

🏡 Are you a Georgia homeowner age 62 or older? You could qualify for property tax savings that many homeowners never ask about.

When people think about retirement, they often focus on Social Security, Medicare, and healthcare costs.

But one expense that often gets overlooked is property taxes.

Depending on where you live, you may qualify for additional property tax relief beyond Georgia's standard homestead exemption.

For residents here in Spalding County, it's worth checking whether you qualify for:
✔️ Homestead Exemptions
✔️ Senior Property Tax Exemptions
✔️ School Tax Exemptions (where applicable)

Eligibility can depend on your:

• Age
• Income
• Disability status
• Veteran status

Every dollar you save on property taxes is another dollar that stays in your retirement budget.

As someone who works with seniors every day, I believe protecting your financial future means looking beyond insurance and making sure you're taking advantage of every benefit available.

If you're not sure where to start, I'm happy to point you toward the right local resources.
Sometimes a simple conversation can uncover savings you didn't know existed.
