BREAKING: DMR closes area of oyster waters due to harmful algal blooms

MARINE RESOURCES

BILOXI, Miss. — Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources on Monday evening announced that harmful algal blooms is the reason for closing an area of water in the Mississippi Sound, which could affect the oyster industry, once again.

Effective immediately, approved waters used for growing and harvesting oysters in Area 5 only are closed.

The area includes an 80-acre, off-bottom oyster park south of Biloxi and Deer Island.

Oystermen who use this exact area have dealt with recent blows to their efforts.

Fresh water intrusion and harmful algal blooms resulted from the double openings of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway in 2019.

The spillway was opened a total of 112 days pouring millions of gallons in freshwater from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain. That water eventually made its appearance in the Mississippi Sound and caused complete devastation to local oysters stopping any business success achieved.

=======

The Army Corps of Engineers decided to reopen the Bonnet Carré again in April 2020 for 28 days when flooding river levels threatened near New Orleans.

As of right now, no other information has been provided by DMR.

I joined Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith in encouraging USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue to use his authority to purchase and distribute Mississippi seafood to Americans in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Seafood is an important component of America’s food supply chain and a major economic driver in South Mississippi.Restaurant closures across the country have reduced the demand for seafood products and placed severe stress on the entire seafood supply chain.

We are requesting that Secretary Perdue consider Mississippi's seafood industry to ensure all aspects of the domestic food supply chain remain safe, sustainable, and secure.
