Doug Jones for Alabama came to Marshall County for a town hall with Jeff McLaughlin for Attorney General for 90-minutes of intelligent conversation. No topic was off limits. When it comes to data centers, the toothpaste is already out of the tube.

Americans have real concerns about artificial intelligence. But new Navigator research also found that 77% of Americans are already using AI, including nearly half who use it at least once a week.

People are using it at work, to manage household budgets, to research health questions and to solve everyday problems. As the technology improves, its use will continue to grow.

That means the demand for the data centers that power AI is not going away.

We can try to stop every project. We can approve projects without fully understanding their consequences. Or we can develop a responsible plan for managing this growth before decisions are locked in.

That is why I proposed the Alabama Data Center Accountability Plan.

ADCAP calls for regional review of electricity, water, roads, emergency services and community impacts before major commitments are made. It requires transparency, meaningful public involvement and safeguards so Alabama families and small businesses are not left paying the costs created by enormous new industrial loads.

The toothpaste is out of the tube. The question now is whether Alabama will manage this change responsibly.
