Democrats pack room to hear runoff candidates, celebrate voter turnout increase

The two Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate in the June 16 Primary runoff election drew over 50 voters to hear their closing statements at the June 2 monthly meeting of the Marshall County Democratic Party. Both Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett addressed the crowd to differentiate themselves and took questions from the audience. Democratic nominee for state auditor Violet B. Edwards warmed up the room and one of the Club's scholarship recepients, Catherine Epperson of Grant, read her award-winning essay to great applause. Marshall County was one of several in the state that saw a huge increase in Democratic voter turnout at the May 19 Primary Election compared to the mid-terms in 2022, according to the Alabama Secretary of State's published data. Marshall County Democratic turnout percent change was up 159.44% while the Republican turnout was -17.27% in Marshall County.

Dear Marshall County Democrats,

Last night’s regular monthly meeting was a reminder of something we all know but rarely say out loud: democracy isn’t always pretty. When tensions rise and candidates clash, it can feel discouraging. But what I saw in that room was the opposite. Our members stood up, spoke clearly, and showed what it means to be Democrats who value honesty, transparency, and accountability.

We don’t control how candidates behave. We do control how we respond. And last night, our response was courage, clarity, and a commitment to doing what’s right for our communities.

As we move toward the June 16 runoff, I want to encourage every Democrat in Marshall County to stay engaged, stay principled, and stay vocal. We fight for candidates who earn our trust. We fight for a process that reflects our values. And we fight for a party that leads with integrity, even when the path is messy.

Thank you for showing what real leadership looks like. Let’s keep pushing forward — together.

My statement on tonight’s SCOTUS decision.

A few weekends ago, all roads led south to Montgomery. A promise was made to fight for Alabama on a scale we haven’t seen in generations.

But for those of us who call the South home, the work didn’t end when the crowds dispersed. We didn't move on when the social media headlines changed. We are still here, on the ground, fighting to protect Black voting rights and build a better future for every Alabamian.

History proves that when great change happens in the South, the rest of the country shifts. We carry that responsibility proudly—but we can’t do it alone. The establishment has overlooked us for decades, but through consistency, persistence, and organizing, we will make them listen.

The song of solidarity is calling once again. How will you answer?

Judges said the GOP-backed 2023 plan was tainted by intentional race discrimination and would dilute Black voters’ power.
