Haines Volunteer Fire Department

Haines Volunteer Fire Department Contact information, map and directions, contact form, opening hours, services, ratings, photos, videos and announcements from Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Fire station, 315 Haines Highway, Haines, AK.

The duty of the Haines Volunteer Fire Department, through its members and staff, is to protect life and property through public education, fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical response.

05/29/2026

Last week, the Haines Volunteer Fire Department joined Palmer Project mountain crew members for rope rescue training (RRO) focused on patient packaging and transport in steep terrain.

In remote communities like ours, search and rescue efforts often rely on collaboration between volunteer responders, local businesses, and community members. Opportunities like this help strengthen emergency response capabilities across the region while building relationships and shared knowledge between teams.

We’re grateful to Oregon Rescue and HVFD and everyone involved for their commitment to preparedness and community safety.

🔥🐻🏕️ The fire danger for Haines has been elevated to Moderate due to weather conditions including wind, fuel moisture, and expected activity over the holiday weekend. There are not any burn suspensions in place. Visitors and campers are reminded that campfires are only allowed in fire rings including on the beaches. Residents are required to obtain and comply with burn permits for debris piles. Burn permits are not required for campfires.

The HVFD will be supporting the triathlon and Beerfest this weekend with medical standby crews and are standing by to serve the residents and visitors of Haines throughout this Memorial Day weekend. Stay safe! 🔥

Low tide is no Joke in Haines. A -4.4 low tide makes for a steep ramp where it is not always safe to push a patient up on the gurney.

The EMS crew ran a drill this evening that required extricating an adult and pediatric “patients” from a boat and up the ramp. While one crew was assessing and packaging the adult patient in a vacuum mattress utilizing the scoop stretcher, an additional crew utilized a lowering system to bring the gurney down and the converted to a 3:1 haul system to bring the patient back up. A great drill putting together many of the trainings that have been done already this year. Thanks to FF/EMT Nathanael Motes for allowing us to use your boat for this valuable training.

Over the last two days, HVFD has been fortunate to host .benjamin (stunt man, retired firefighter, and rescue instructor) that graciously donated his time to teach a low angle rope rescue course. Our students practiced anchor points, patient packaging, lowering, and hoisting systems. During joint training the whole department was plugged into the drill at the PC dock with the students leading. Tuesday morning class led with a drill at Picture Point park, rescuing our “patient” that was down on the beach. Thanks Jason for the great instruction, donating your time, and investing in our department for the safety of the citizens and visitors of Haines.

This week’s Fire Truck Friday 🚒 post is a little bit different (aside from being a day late). The featured Fire truck is actually a Water Truck from . Two weeks ago, a car caught fire on the Haines Highway just south of their construction zone. A passing motorist reported the fire to the crew and they sprung into action. One flagger, also a member of the KVVFD, headed to the KVVFD station to get a fire truck while other SERB crew got their water truck to the scene. Because of this crew’s quick actions, they ensured the driver was able to exit safely with no injuries and saved the belongings in the vehicle. By the time Klehini Valley Volunteer Fire Department and HVFD arrived on scene, the fire was completely out.

Michael Hoy, seen in the first photo, is a former KVVFD and HVFD firefighter and we are thankful for his and the rest of the crew’s actions to mitigate this emergency. Bravo to you and SERB for giving back to your community time and time again.

Remember, fire trucks come in all shapes and sizes!

Yesterday, the U.S. Forest Service and Alaska DNR - Division of Forestry & Fire Protection - DFFP were in Haines to conduct the annual RT-130 Wildland fire refresher and pack test. Four Firefighters from HVFD and one from Klehini Valley Volunteer Fire Department were in attendance. The pack test consists of a 3 mile walk, in under 45 minutes, while wearing a 45 pound pack. We conduct this test on Lutak Road, walking from near the Ferry Terminal for 3 miles towards Chilkoot Lake Road. Rumor has it, we have the most scenic pack test route!

An amazing feat, one of our longest serving active volunteers, CJ, (front row, light blue shirt) has been a red carded wildland firefighter since 1979, serving all over the nation in multiple different capacities. HVFD is so fortunate to have such dedicated and experienced volunteers in our ranks.

Big thanks to Brian Mork (Asst. Fire Management Officer, USFS) and Isaako Muta (Operations Suppression Foreman, AKDOF&FP) for not only traveling all the way to Haines but also for completing the test with our crew. Your leadership and expertise is much appreciated and we look forward to working with you more!

Tonight’s Engine Company training consisted of drafting and rural water supply. In areas without fire hydrants, the HVFD has two water tankers (3000 and 3500 gallons) to bring extra water to the fire scene; and Klehini Valley VFD has two additional tankers that we can call upon. To facilitate that, the tankers have on board pumps, or they can dump water into a porta-tank through the large chute on the back of the tank. One of the engines can then suck water (draft) out of that tank while the tanker leaves to go refill. This results in a quicker turnaround time and more water can be shuttled.

Did you know some of our trucks carry a bowling pin as part of the standard inventory? This works the same as a rubber mallet to hit the lugs on the hard suction hose/strainers to create a tight connection. Bowling pins are generally cheaper (donated from bowling alleys), and are easier to hold by firefighters with bulky gloves on. Plus, it makes for a cool story! If anyone local has some extra bowling pins laying around, we could use a couple more!

Interested in driving, pumping, and spraying water with these awesome trucks?! The HVFD is always recruiting for new members, no experience or CDL necessary; all training provided on the job.

Your HVFD CPR instructors have successfully taught CPR/First Aid to 18 of the Haines Glacier Bears staff on Monday, and 10 Chilkoot Indian Association staff today. These students learned how to provide adult, child, and infant CPR, how to use an AED, provide choking relief, and first aid. Not only are these skills helpful in the workplace for eachother and our children attending school; but these are 28 community members that are ready to step in and provide help around town in the event of a medical emergency. Great job to all the Haines School and CIA students!

If you are interested in a CPR class of your own, the HVFD provides multiple hybrid learning platforms through the American Heart Association to fit your needs. Call the fire hall at (907) 766-6441 during business hours or email [email protected] for more information.

Last night for our weekly monday training, HVFD conducted training on vehicle accidents and stabilization using our new-to-us rescue struts. This vital piece of equipment allows us to secure an unstable vehicle to safely allow medics and firefighters to remove trapped victims and provide care inside the vehicle.

Big thanks to Girdwood Fire and Rescue and the City of Whittier, AK Fire Department for the donation of these struts, at no cost to Haines residents. This is another great example of the Alaska fire service paying it forward and helping eachother out.

If you’re interested in joining the HVFD stop by the firehouse or visit our website to pick up an application and learn more.
