📢STATEWIDE FIRE ALERT REMAINS IN EFFECT📢

Statewide Fire Danger is HIGH today!
The Northern half of the state is classified as a High Fire Danger, while the Southern half has increased to a Very High Fire Danger classification.

We continue to urge everyone to avoid outdoor burning as we remain in drought conditions.

For clarity - this is not a ban on outdoor burning. This is a public notice to increase awareness of the drought conditions. As always, if you are burning over a .25 of an acre, you must obtain a burn permit from AFC's dispatch center.

This week, we celebrate the dedicated men and women who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our community safe. Our Public Safety Telecommunicators (PST) are the lifeline to both our citizens and our first responders. They are the calm voice on the other end of the line during moments of chaos.

Our PSTs work 24/7, answering over 23,000 calls per year and providing emergency dispatch for 20 different agencies in the County. I would like to thank each of our PSTs at Marion County 911 for their dedication and professionalism. It does not go unnoticed.

🚨As we head into National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we want to take a moment to put things into perspective. 💛

Behind each of the 2.6 million 9-1-1 calls answered in Alabama last year are 1,675 dedicated Public Safety Telecommunicators, serving across 104 Emergency Communications Centers statewide.

Fun fact: The average age of Alabama’s telecommunicators is 38, with an average tenure of 5.9 years.

We share these numbers to highlight just how many incredible people are behind the headset, answering the calls of Alabama’s 5+ million residents and the nearly 29 million visitors who come through our state each year. These are the people who are there, ready and waiting when the phone rings, knowing that more often than not, it represents someone’s worst day.

These numbers represent your lifeline, and we could not be more thankful for each telecommunicator across the state....for the work they do every day for those on the line and for the responders in the field.

Take a moment to thank a telecommunicator today, tomorrow, this week, or anytime. And if you are one, please know how grateful we are for you. We can't wait to see you in your center this week, BOLO for Board staff!! 👀

*Statistics are based on Primary PSAPs and employees within those centers.

Check out this segment from WBRC where 911 Director Augy Avery and EMA Director Russ Taylor discuss new tactical repeaters that the County was able to purchase thanks to Federal grant funding. The repeaters can be deployed at incidents to enhance on-scene communications between first responder agencies, and can be deployed in minutes on a truck or SUV, or setup on a tripod and operate off solar power.

First responders in Marion County received a major upgrade in communication equipment meaning they can talk and make decisions faster to keep you safe during an emergency.
