On June 24, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a property owner in Middletown was digging around the base of an old oak tree when they uncovered what appeared to be a cannonball.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office Bomb Unit was notified, and Bomb Unit Specialist Grimes responded to the scene to investigate.

Upon examination, the item was determined to be a 4.75-inch diameter solid shot cannonball, weighing approximately 7.8 pounds.

The cannonball was safely recovered by the Butler County Sheriff's Office Bomb Unit.

Discoveries like this serve as a reminder that historical military artifacts can still be found throughout our area. If you ever uncover what appears to be military ordnance or another suspicious item, do not handle it. Leave it where it is and contact local law enforcement so it can be evaluated safely.

Weather Wonder: June 24, 2026

It is something you have probably seen in the sky before, where the clouds look like a flying saucer or a stack of pancakes. These clouds are called Lenticular Clouds (also known as Altocumulus Stand Lenticular clouds). Lenticular clouds are associated with waves in the atmosphere that develop when relatively stable, fast moving air is forced upward over a topographic barrier (such as a mountain) that is oriented perpendicular to the direction where the upper-level wind is blowing. When there is enough moisture present above the mountain-top level, Lenticular Clouds develop within the crest of mountain waves, where the air is rising. These clouds are continuously developing and dissipating within the wave’s crest and downwind of the crest. This is why they appear to be stationary, even though winds are moving through the entire cloud. They are most often seen in the winter or spring when winds aloft are typically stronger.

Law enforcement is often measured by the arrests we make, but some of the most important moments never result in handcuffs.

On June 5, Deputy Renkel was working an extra-duty assignment at Countryside Mobile Home Park when he was alerted to a young girl, Evelynn, who was suffering a seizure and had stopped breathing.

By the time Deputy Renkel arrived, Evelynn had begun breathing again but continued to seize. While there was little he could do medically beyond basic care, he immediately went to work comforting and supporting the family during one of the most frightening moments of their lives. He held Evelynn, helped keep her as comfortable as possible, attempted to cool her down with wet towels due to her high fever, and provided reassurance to her mother and grandmother until paramedics arrived.

Sometimes being a deputy isn't about making arrests or writing reports. It's about being there when people need someone the most. It's about providing comfort in a crisis, remaining calm when others are overwhelmed, and making a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

Thank you, Deputy Renkel, for reminding us that the badge represents compassion just as much as it represents law enforcement.

If you hear loud booms between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. today in the Trenton, Madison Township, or St. Clair Township areas, there's no cause for alarm.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office Bomb Unit will be conducting a controlled explosives demonstration at the Bomb Range on Woodsdale Road for participants attending Respect for Law Camp.
