From Kings Network News ()

I recently sat down with California Congressional candidate Sandra Van Scotter for an extensive conversation covering some of the biggest issues facing our communities today, including healthcare affordability, groundwater sustainability, agriculture, artificial intelligence, immigration, and political accountability.

As someone who has served in public office, I believe voters deserve opportunities to hear detailed discussions directly from candidates instead of only hearing short political soundbites. The Central Valley faces unique challenges involving water, economic growth, infrastructure, and rising costs of living, and these conversations impact working families throughout our region.

The discussion also raised concerns about future AI expansion, data centers, and how public policy decisions could affect local resources and jobs for years to come.

What issue do you believe is currently having the biggest impact on Central Valley families?

I do not support Measure T, also known as the proposed TOT tax increase.

One of my biggest concerns is the comparison being made between Hanford and larger cities like Los Angeles when discussing tourism and economic impact tied to major events such as the Super Bowl or Olympics. Hanford is not Los Angeles. The population, tourism volume, economy, and level of outside spending are completely different.

I also believe people underestimate how much pricing affects travel decisions. Families, sports teams, tournament organizers, and business travelers often compare hotel costs and taxes between nearby cities before deciding where to stay. Even modest increases can add up during a multi-day trip. For many travelers, saving $30 or $40 matters because that money can instead go toward gas, food, shopping, or other expenses.

My concern is that increasing the TOT could make Hanford less competitive when it comes to attracting overnight visitors, tournaments, and travel-related spending that supports local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.

I also believe voters should understand that Measure T is a general tax. The revenue is not legally required to stay dedicated specifically to public safety, parks, or roads. If additional taxes are being requested, there should be stronger accountability, clearer spending guarantees, and comparisons that realistically reflect Hanford’s local economy.

When I served on the council, we focused heavily on growing the city’s tax base instead of relying on raising taxes on residents and visitors. We worked to attract projects and businesses that generated long-term revenue for the community. Examples included bringing Costco to Hanford, supporting cannabis-related revenue opportunities, and creating community events like Winter Wonderland that helped generate economic activity.

During the time I left office, the City of Hanford also had a reported $4.2 million surplus, which was the first surplus the city had seen in approximately 12 years. To me, that showed it was possible to improve city finances through economic growth, business development, and expanding revenue sources rather than continuing to place additional tax burdens on residents and visitors.

I believe the solution is not simply raising taxes. The better long-term approach is creating incentives for businesses, encouraging development, attracting visitors, and expanding economic opportunities that naturally grow city revenue without placing additional financial pressure on residents, travelers, and local businesses.

For those reasons, I do not support Measure T or the proposed TOT tax increase.

One thing I have learned over the years is that politics can create strong disagreements and emotional moments, but I have never believed politics should define a person.

Over time, many people who once disagreed with me politically, including some who supported the recall against me, have actually become friends. I think that happens when people move past politics and truly get to know one another.

I recently had the chance to meet Kamala Hughes in person. She asked me, “Do you know who I am?” At first I said no, but the moment she told me her name, I immediately knew who she was. It was genuinely nice finally putting a face to the name after all these years.

I appreciated the conversation and the kindness she showed. Moments like this remind me that political opinions are one thing, but a person’s character is what matters most.

From Kings Network News ()

Sometimes the most interesting parts of a community’s history are the things people walk past every day without noticing.

A recent evening walk through Downtown Lemoore led to a deeper look into the decorative brick-stamped sidewalks scattered throughout parts of downtown and the revitalization efforts connected to them from years ago.

Projects like these may seem small at first, but they can play a major role in helping preserve community character and creating spaces people enjoy exploring.

The history behind the downtown brick sections is something many residents may not know.

Do you think preserving unique downtown features helps strengthen community identity?

FRESNO, Calif. — Central Fish Co. continues to build its reputation as a go-to seafood destination, offering a mix of classic favorites and fresh options all in one place.

It’s the kind of spot people keep recommending when you ask where to eat in Fresno.

Full review in the comments.

Is this place worth the hype, or is there a better seafood spot in Fresno?
