Latest water update is that the standpipes are at 117’. This was basically achieved in one week — 84’ to 117’. A community pulling together making an immediate impact. Thanks to all.

The immediate impact is on water pressure — critical for the Fire Department. Next is getting to a position to rest and maintain the well pumps which have been running 24/7. Fantastic progress — but keep conserving!

Only a few days left to get your Transfer Station permits for Fiscal Year 2027. There are a few extra days highlighted below that Town Hall will be open to provide residents with extra flexibility.

Transfer Station Permit Sales and Upcoming Independence Day Holiday Schedule
June 18, 2026

As we kick off the new fiscal year and prepare for the Independence Day holiday weekend, Hanover residents are reminded to renew their Transfer Station permits. Renew before July 1st to take advantage of discounted rates.

Special Holiday Schedule

⦁ Friday, July 3rd - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
⦁ Sunday, July 5th - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

These extended hours are being offered to help residents purchase or renew permits during what is expected to be a busy weekend. Avoid delays and get your permit squared away before heading to the Transfer Station. Please note that residents displaying expired green stickers will be directed to Town Hall to obtain a current permit before using the facility.

Regular Weekday Schedule

Permits may be purchased online or in person. However, all permits must be picked up at Hanover Town Hall, 550 Hanover Street, on the following schedule:

⦁ Tuesdays, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
⦁ Wednesdays, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
⦁ Thursdays, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Hanover was established in 1727, a little over 100 years after the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, 17 miles to our south. We have maintained our "country town" atmosphere over the years, yet combined it with the convenience of shopping malls, light industry, and, of course, technology.

UPDATE (June 19, 2026) — Standpipes up to 108’ this morning after continued water conservation and rainfall. We need to get them well over 110’ and maintain these levels while also giving our well pumps some downtime for routine maintenance.

And more rain potential for Sunday (t-storms) and then more steady rain Monday into Tuesday.

It is great to see Hanover pull together in this water emergency caused by the Level-2 drought and overly heavy water use last weekend.

Town of Hanover Water Restriction Emergency
June 15, 2026

The levels in our water tanks are critically low. This is as low as they have been in at least the last 15 years. Use is outpacing our ability to supply water; our pumps are running 24/7, increasing the likelihood of equipment failure.

We ask everyone to do all they can to be part of the solution and reduce water use as much as possible.

Starting tonight, June 16, 2026, at MIDNIGHT (12:00 am), the Hanover Water Department will be actively monitoring irrigation usage, and we will cite violators with fines and post the addresses of violators on Hanover's website.

We hope this provides everyone with a reasonable opportunity to turn off their irrigation systems and reduce non-essential water use.

The current situation is serious and requires immediate attention. These measures are being put in place to ensure adequate fire protection and that essential household needs can be met.

These actions are intended to safeguard public safety, maintain system reliability, and preserve our limited water resources during this period of concern. We appreciate the community's cooperation and commitment to helping us address this challenge.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation with these water-use restrictions. By working together and complying with these measures, we can help preserve and maintain the reliability of our water system for the entire community. If conservation goals are not met, additional restrictions or mandatory measures may be necessary in the future.

Tonight's Select Board meeting (Hanover-MA.gov/SB), scheduled for 6:30 pm, will provide a forum to further address this situation.

Please read this alert and support our community water restrictions. I am sure that this topic will be discussed Monday night during the Water Rate or Town Manager Update agenda items.

Due to extremely high water demand and ongoing dry weather conditions. all three of Hanover‘s water treatment plants are currently operating at full capacity and but having trouble meeting current consumption demands. As a result, our storage tank levels are approaching critical, historically low thresholds and are not recovering during off-peak hours.

We are asking all residents and businesses to immediately suspend non-essential water usage, including outdoor watering, irrigation, pool filling, vehicle washing, and other outdoor water usage over the next several days.

These conservation efforts will help maintain adequate water storage levels for essential daily use, fire protection, and emergency response across the whole community.

A nice job by one Hanover’s Summer Interns is captured in this article. This program, coordinated by our Town Manager, has been an ongoing success for the town and for launching post-graduation careers for the participants. Thank you Joe Colangelo for implementing this value-adding program.
