Last week I took the short trip down I 83 to Baltimore where the annual Local Progress National Convening was hosted this year.

The National Covening is an annual gathering for Local Progress’ 1,800 progressive, local elected officials can come together to share innovative policy solutions, learn best practices, and support one another.

I learned a lot of lessons I hope to bring back to New Cumberland: I got to tour Baltimore’s bike lane network and the “Big Jump” project to safely get non-motorists to communities on either side of I-83; the googly-eyed Mr. Trash Wheel that helps to keep trash out of the Chesapeake Bay; lessons in collaborative governance; how to use public dollars for public good; how to stop a data center from being built in your community; how to empower more social housing; and met a lot of great people doing work in local municipalities all over the country.

STORM RELATED INFORMATION AND UPDATES:

Borough staff continue working to clear fallen trees, branches, and other debris. We appreciate your patience as crews continue cleanup efforts. Smaller alleys (those not maintained or snow plowed by the Borough) will not be cleared nor debris removed by the Borough. This is a significant and, in some ways, an unprecedented storm. As a result of the significant damage, cleanup, and ongoing challenges, the Borough has declared a Disaster Emergency.

PPL has provided information that 95% of outages will be restored by 11PM Tuesday, and nearly all power restored by 11PM Wednesday.

Residents are reminded that storm-related branches and other woody yard waste may be placed out for regular scheduled trash collection, provided all materials meet the collection guidelines for size, bundling, and weight. Yard waste should be in biodegradable bags, not plastic. Tree branches or other woody debris should be no longer than 5 feet in length, individual branches should not exceed six inches in diameter, should be bundled with twine, and bundles should not exceed 30 pounds. Debris larger than six inches in diameter, tree stumps, and material not cut to size will not be collected. Yard debris should be placed curbside, in your yard, not in the street. Borough staff will begin street sweeping next week and are not able to collect sticks or other larger debris. Piles placed in the street will not be picked up.

While we expect collection through weekly Penn Waste trash schedules, there is an uncommonly high volume of debris from the storm. It will likely require more than one week for debris to be collected. Contracting with a private company is likely the only option for large volumes of tree branches, downed trees, and other large debris. Consider contacting your homeowner’s insurance for guidance regarding any available coverage if significant cleanup is required or damage occurred to your property.

Residents may also consider taking storm debris to the Lower Allen Township Compost Facility at 1400 St. Johns Rd, Camp Hill, PA 17011. New Cumberland Borough residents will be permitted to drop-off at the Lower Allen facility for a fee ($25 for pickup or small trailer, $100 for small dump truck or dump trailer) until July 17th or until they reach capacity. Payment is per load and must be made at the time of drop-off by cash or check at the facility. Please be prepared to show your ID. Hours for the facility are M-F, 8:00A-1:30P. Saturday (7/11) from 8:00A-1:00P, and extending hours this Tuesday (7/7) and Thursday (7/9) until 7:00P.

Borough staff will continue to access the amount of storm debris throughout the community and continue to evaluate collection alternatives. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as collection cleanup efforts continue in the borough and region as we work to restore normal conditions throughout the community.

This is where it all started for me.

Back in 2017, Borough Park was covered in NO DOGS signs. My wife and I loved taking our dog Mabel for walks, and we wanted to be able to enjoy our parks together. So we led the effort to change the borough’s parks ordinance to allow dogs. It took nine months of showing up in front of council, but we got it done.

Mabel’s gone now, but it still makes me happy every time I see folks out walking their dogs in the park.

That whole experience hooked me. It showed me we have a real stake in the place we live, and that even small changes can make a difference in how people enjoy life here. It’s a big part of why I eventually ran for council.

Next year, three council seats are up for election. If you’ve ever felt that same pull, that you could help make this town a little better, I’d love to talk. And if you just thought of someone who’d be perfect for it, tell them, or comment or DM me.

Our neighbors in Lower Allen are working toward improving the Beacon Hill Radar Site adjacent to the borough.

Beacon Hill Radar Site

The Township is in the bidding process for Phase 1 of the Beacon Hill Radar Site Project. The project will construct a new parking area, a pavilion, stormwater management facilities, recreational/lawn game areas, and approximately 1200 LF of paved walking trails around the site. The Township anticipates that a majority of the Phase 1 work will be completed by the end of November 2026. Meanwhile, the design for Phase 2 will undergo its final details which will seek to construct additional walking trails as well as a playground that will be modeled after the old radio towers that once stood tall on the site while serving the U.S. Military through the mid 1900’s. The project is funded in part through a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) grant and a Local Share Account (LSA) grant. Below is an early conceptual rendering for the project. While some details have changed, the rendering provides a general depiction of the layout of the site. Hopefully this creates an inviting recreational area for all ages for many years to come!
