"Now, following back-to-back years of sharp increases, the murder rate has begun to recede in Houston and the county as a whole. And each major category of violent crime — murder, r**e, robbery and assault — has declined countywide through the first half of 2022 compared to the same point last year, according to DPS data." -Sept 12th Houston Chronicle
And contrary to the narrative being pushed by Rs and others is that Democratic judges are soft on violent crime and are letting violent criminals out of jail. But the data shows otherwise. In 2015 all 23 Criminal District Judges were Republicans. In 2016, 11 of the judges were ousted by Democratic judges, and then in 2018, 12 of the judges elected were Democrats, so since 2019 all sitting Harris County criminal district court judges have been Democrats. (*The TX legislature added a new court that started in 2022 and is currently occupied by an Abbott appointee).
In 2015 the Average (Median) Bond Amounts set:
1. On Capital Murders the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set was $92,833.33 ($75,000.00).
2. On Murders the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set was $67,238.10 ($50,000.00).
3. On all other Felony Homicides the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set was $44,491.53 ($35,000.00).
In 2021 these are the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set:
1. On Capital Murders the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set was $220,957.45 ($200,000.00).
2. On Murders the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set was $119,193.55 ($100,000.00).
3. On all other Felony Homicides the Average (Median) Bond Amount Set was amount was $ $42,017.05 ($30,000.00)
So on Capital Murder cases - Democratic judges have increased the bond median amount from $75k to $200k.
And on murder cases - Democratic judges have increased the bond median amount from $50k to $100k.
