Hey neighbors! Well, it’s been awhile since we’ve updated our page, but our little library is still going strong. I just went out to tidy it up and switch out some books and WOW, it was loaded! 🥰

Thank you so very much to everyone who has shared books with us and/or taken books to read. Whether you’re a grown up looking for a good novel or a kid, tween, or teen looking for something good to read - we’ve got you covered! Please feel free to stop by and grab what you want.

PS the door became rather warped in the blizzard, so it’s not fully closing…we’ll fix it in time, but for now just do your best. The books have been fine!

You’re always welcome here ❤️

Happy October! I’ve been sick since the beginning of October so haven’t done much here 😕 BUT last week, we gave our little library a little refresh!

There’s a lot of new books for kids and adults and we have a guest book you can sign too. Many thanks to the kind folks who have dropped off books and refilled our little dog treat container! Please remember you do NOT need to leave a book in order to take one. If there’s stuff in there that you want to read, go for it❤️

Have a great week and be careful out there, lots of yucky stuff going around. I’m going on week 4 here of a nasty respiratory infection and it’s no fun!

PS Books for donation can be left on our front porch. Thank you again! 🥰

Why is our Little Free Library named “The Cozy Squirrel?” Well, a few reasons, the main one being the cozy little squirrel pictured here!

We moved into our home a year ago, and one of the first things we did after moving was to install a bird feeder pole system that holds a few different feeders because we really love birdwatching. I’m a freelance illustrator and artist, and I create a lot of my illustrations while sitting by this window, because that way I can enjoy the birds while I draw.

Well, after awhile, this furry little visitor started showing up - pretty much every day. I named my little visitor Sadie. Sadie loves to peek into our home and sometimes even has the nerve to tap on the window! For awhile, she used the outdoor window sill as a launching pad so she could leap onto the bird feeders, but then we moved them further from the house and she seemed
kind of bitter about it. 😂

She is really cute and to be honest, I’m not even really sure if she’s a she, but Sadie has been my buddy all year.

PS if you have any books to drop off, we could use them! Just put them in the library when you can. Thank you to everyone who has been giving and taking books! Knowing that people are enjoying our little library really makes us happy.

Remember we shared that conflict is a key part of story the other day? Well I thought we’d begin to introduce some of the fantastic stories of conflict that are waiting for you right now in our Little Free Library!

Echo Mountain by Lauren Wolk is a wonderful read for ages 10 and up. It’s historical fiction, which means that the story is set in a real place during a time in history that is recognizable. It accurately captures the details of a certain time period through the way people dress, how they speak, their customs, traditions and social norms of the time - but it’s still a made up story.

Here is a summary of Echo Mountain from fantasticfiction.com :

“1933. When Ellie and her family lose everything, they flee to Echo Mountain. Ellie runs wild, exploring the mountain's mysteries. But the one she can't solve is who's leaving the gifts for her: tiny wooden carvings of animals and flowers, dotted around the mountain for her to find.

Then Ellie's father has a terrible accident. When she sets out to find a cure for him, she discovers Cate, the outcast witch, and Larkin, a wild mountain boy. From them she learns about being a healer, being brave - and how there can be more to a person than first meets the eye. “

Plenty of story conflict there, folks!

I love that the main character of this book is a girl who is adventurous and courageous - especially during a time period where girls were not encouraged to have the kinds of adventures that were considered normal for boys only.

Ellie is also extremely compassionate and shows a kind of empathy and curiosity that is far beyond what some of the adults in her life seem capable of.

So ..what are you waiting for? Echo Mountain is still waiting in our library for you on Clardon Drive. Come and get it! 😊

This is what the inside of our Little Free Library looks like without any books in it. We chose a wallpaper designed by artist Katherine Quinn, because the vibe of it represents “story” so well. The wolves and the swans, the moody background - it draws you in the way a great story tends to do.

You may have heard the quote, “No conflict, no story.”

Well there’s a great author, lecturer and storyteller named Robert McKee who explains that a little more: “Nothing moves forward in a story except through conflict. The music of story is conflict. Story stands dead still without conflict.”

That’s true of our favorites books, isn’t it? It’s also true of our lives. We aren’t really growing without experiencing some sort of conflict. So when you encounter it, remember to tell yourself that you are living a great story. And your story - no matter how conflicted - is certainly not over. So KEEP GOING.

Now get over here and pick up a great book from The Cozy Squirrel little free library! Later this week we will introduce you to some of the great stories of conflict we currently have waiting for you. 😊
