Today, the Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) announced it has taken new steps to increase outreach to Small Businesses (SBs) and Small Diverse Businesses (SDBs) to help them apply for state contracting opportunities. ​

Each month, DGS's Bureau of Diversity, Inclusion and Small Business Opportunities (BDISBO) issues a Notice of Forthcoming Procurements and a Notice of Forthcoming Construction Opportunities to over 5,000 SB and SDB advocates and stakeholder organizations registered with BDISBO.

DGS welcomes Stan Griffith of Uncle Moe’s Café to the North Office Building and several other state buildings that DGS manages in downtown Harrisburg!

Uncle Moe’s Café is a vending and Micro Market business owned and operated by Mr. Griffith, of Harrisburg, with help from the Pennsylvania Business Enterprise Program (BEP).

The BEP is administered by the PA Department of Labor & Industry’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) serving persons with vision loss. The BEP works closely with these independent business operators by purchasing and maintaining equipment at locations and offering on-going technical support to help train licensed visually impaired Pennsylvania residents, like Mr. Griffith, to establish and operate food service businesses in a variety of federal, state, municipal, and private locations throughout the Commonwealth.

Uncle Moe’s Café vending is located in room G25 in the North Office Building. Other vending locations will be located in the Rachel Carson Building (first floor) and the Forum Building (floors, 2, 3 and 4). On the 8th floor of the Forum Place, Mr. Griffith will be on site selling sandwiches, salads and more.

DGS Secretary Reggie McNeil was one of four panelists to participate in the Martin Luther King Reflecting on Ideals and Current Realities panel discussion held at the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Hosted by the Governor’s Advisory Commission on African American Affairs, the event also featured panelists Dr. Khalid Mumin, Pennsylvania Secretary of Education; Dr. Latika Davis-Jones, Pennsylvania Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs; and Chad Lassiter, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. Anette Nance, MSW, Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on African American Affairs moderated the discussion, which focused on the incorporation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s principles and ideals into the operations of each leader’s respective department.

Following the discussion, each panelist and the moderator received the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission Martin Luther King Jr. Impact Award to recognize them as a change agent for justice for the people of the Commonwealth.

Today marked the first day employees of DGS’ Bureau of Procurement reported to their new workspace at the Arsenal Building at 1800 Herr St. in Harrisburg!

Procurement employees moved from Harrisburg’s Forum Place Office Building and will co-occupy the Arsenal Building with the four bureaus of DGS’ Capital Programs.

The newly remodeled worksite is flexible and comfortable and includes a kitchen, collaboration spaces, conference rooms, and other amenities.

DGS is leading a space consolidation effort across the Commonwealth. We are proud to model the strategies we are asking other agencies to follow to reduce their office space footprint.

To participate in the Department of General Services (DGS) Sodium Chloride (Road Salt) Contract for the approaching August 2024 - July 2025 season, please submit a new Salt Contract Participation Agreement electronically through the DGS COSTARS website from the Members' area. www.dgs.pa.gov/COSTARS

This spring, the Pennsylvania Department of General Services will launch a renovation project in the East Wing of the State Capitol building to install a grand staircase to replace the existing escalators, install a large, ADA-compliant group elevator, make rotunda lighting improvements, and upgrade the cafeteria’s ceiling, lighting, and HVAC systems. The renovation project will save the Commonwealth money in the long-term while creating a safer flow of traffic from the East Wing to the rest of the Capitol building.

Today is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, where the public is encouraged to thank our law enforcement officers for their commitment to and sacrifices made in protection of the public.

On this day, the public can show their support of our law enforcement officers by wearing blue clothing as a sign of solidarity, writing a letter or sending a card to your local police department, sharing your positive experiences with law enforcers on social media, or by simply thanking them for their service when you see them.

The Pennsylvania Department of General Services has released its 2022-23 Small Business Opportunities Program Annual Report, announcing that for the first time in Pennsylvania's history, the Commonwealth spent more than $1 billion with small businesses (SBs), small diverse businesses (SDBs), and veteran business enterprises (VBEs) during the 2022-23 fiscal year.

The report was prepared by DGS's Bureau of Diversity, Inclusion and Small Business Opportunities (BDISBO) and highlights record spending, including:

- Spending with SDBs and VBEs reached $690 million – an increase from last fiscal year's reporting of $536.6 million.
- SDBs received a record high $678 million, or 12.2 percent, of Commonwealth spending for goods and services during the 2022-23 fiscal year.
- SBs received $447 million, or 8 percent, of Commonwealth spending for goods and services during the 2022-23 fiscal year.

The auction is open to the public and will take place on December 12th at 10:00 a.m. at Manheim Keystone Pennsylvania, 488 Firehouse Road in Grantville. An in-person preview of vehicles begins on Thursday, December 7th and will run through Sunday, December 10th.

The annual Tree Lighting ceremony was held today in the Capitol Rotunda. 🎄

The tree, a 20-foot Douglas Fir from Crystal Spring Tree Farm in Lehighton, Carbon County, is decorated with more than 1,200 LED lights and more than 700 handmade ornaments donated by students and seniors throughout the commonwealth coordinated by Pre-K for PA and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

Governor Josh Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis were joined by Department of General Services Secretary Reggie McNeil and Reverend Anjel Scarborough, SCP, of All Saints Episcopal Church in Hershey. The Central Dauphin High School Chorus performed several Christmas carols and Santa Claus made an appearance.

In addition to the Rotunda Tree, there is a 20-foot Douglas fir – also from Crystal Spring Tree Farm – outside on the Capitol steps.

The Rotunda tree will be lit daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., while the Capitol Steps tree will be lit daily from 5 p.m. to midnight through January 8, 2024.

There’s a new addition to the Main Capitol Rotunda! The 2023 Christmas tree has arrived at the Pennsylvania State Capitol.

Over the next week, the 20-foot Douglas Fir from Crystal Spring Tree Farm in Lehighton, Carbon County, will be decorated with lights and ornaments from the PA Department Of Aging Senior Centers and Pre-K for PA students.

The Capitol Tree Lighting will take place on Tuesday, December 5, at 12:30 p.m. in the Main Capitol Rotunda.
