Our staff started the new year with a visit to Ollie's bobblehead; standing at over 16 feet tall it is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the “World’s Largest Bobblehead.”

Ollie’s is a fantastic supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region. We’re excited to welcome them back for their 3rd exclusive Bowl for Kids’ Sake event. For the past 2 years Ollie’s has been our largest corporate fundraiser. It was great to have our two Bigs from Ollie’s, Tom and Brittany, join us this morning. Ollie’s is amazing at giving back to the community. Their bobblehead is as big as their hearts.

We love getting updates on our Bigs & Littles! Tom & Preston, your connection is a testament to the power of genuine companionship. May your shared moments continue to bring joy and support to each other's lives. Cheers to lasting friendships!

Big Tom's mentorship journey began in 2002 when he was first matched with Little Preston through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, PA. Their lasting friendship proves that mentoring connections can withstand the test of miles. “He truly is family,” Tom said. “We still make sure to get together at least once a year. He is Lila's godfather, and I am so proud of him.” Big Tom has played a pivotal role as a Big to not just one but four Littles over the past two decades!

At their first meeting, High School Bigs from HBGSD SciTech Campus gifted handmade bracelets to their Little from HBGSD Ben Franklin Elementary School. One Little was very excited to see the word “Friends” on the bracelet she received from her Big Sister. Each match then created their own super special handshake.

Thanks to the PNC Innovation Zone at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, our Bigs and Littles then learned about coding and worked together to build code that moved their characters in a videogame. Our matches were chatting excitedly and got along very well. We are looking forward to watching these grow.

JENNIFER’S ORIGIONAL POST:
"With National Mentoring Month coming up in January, it's only right that I share my past year with my "not-so-little-anymore-little", Ariel.

When Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region - Pennsylvania matched us in October of 2022 I had no idea the thought and intention that went into matching a "big" with a "little." There were some real a-ha moments where I went "ohhhh I get it. We've got A LOT in common."

And we've both grown together so much. With Ariel now 14 - but claiming to be almost 15, and by the way if you didn't know is a big deal guys - and me reluctantly getting older each day... our bond in the past year feels like the growth of a decade.

When we met Ariel was 13 and had been enrolled in cyber school since the start of the pandemic. Although she scored fairly well academically, she was starved for social interaction - ahem, I see what you did here Big Brothers Big Sisters 😉 So we did it all.

We went to Sky Zone to jump around, the Susquehanna Art Museum to gaze at the stars in the planetarium, we saw the Capital Area School for the Arts Charter School 's performance of RENT, we tye-dyed shirts with other littles and bigs, we rode EVERY water slide at Hershey Park thanks to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, we roller skated at my childhood skating rink, tried sushi and Thai food for the first time, still ate a ton of macarons Sweet Velvet Macarons, we even became a "skateboarder" - for a month, oh and we saw Taylor Swift .... at the movies 😉

But don't worry there were still plenty of Target and Starbucks runs in between. And yes she got me to make a few TikTok s, but no dancing- too cringe 💁‍♀️🤣 We're still yet to start reading together the Judy Blume book "Are you there God, it's me Margaret," after seeing the movie, but we're pacing well on last year's goals and continuing our traditions.

Having the honor to play a role and be a positive influence in this young girl's life has been the most impactful decision I've made since returning home to PA. I am so proud to be a part of a mentorship program that takes serious strides to improve the life of children and in turn also impacts the adults that participate and show up for these kids.

It took a little while but Ariel eventually admitted to me, "I did ask for the youngest big possible." (insert 14 almost, 15 year old sassiness ). And my response, "Well, looks like you got the big with the most fun." She replied, "I did." 💗

"To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world." - Dr. Seuss. And if you're interested in finding out how to be a "big" please message me. I'd love to see what story you and your "little" could tell too.

Happy holidays from Ariel and I, we hope you have a safe and wonderful new year! xoxo

"

Our Lancaster County programs are growing! Last week, we expanded our High School Bigs program in partnership with School District of Lancaster. Bigs from JP McCaskey High School and McCaskey East High School got to know their Littles at Lincoln Middle School.

“The kids were a little nervous when they first arrived,” says Deborah Hornick, Director of Lebanon & Lancaster Programs, “But they were soon excitedly chatting about upcoming holiday plans.” Bigs and Littles worked on crafts together while enjoying holiday music and snacks. At the end of the day Little Sister Serenity approached Deborah to say, “Thanks! This was the best day ever. I can’t wait to come back!”

Littles and Bigs visited with residents at Celebration Villa of Lebanon and decorated holiday cookies as a gift for law enforcement officers at North Cornwall Township Police Department. Youth and mentors chatted with the senior center residents about plans for the holiday season and the New Year.

Little Sister Elle says, "I enjoy spreading cheer for the holidays in our community, especially with our senior citizens. My grandparents are in their 80s and I spend a lot of time with them. They teach me many important things about life."

Too many sprinkles? No such thing! Our Susquenita School District Bigs & Littles had a blast at their Party filled with yummy treats, music and goofy reindeer games. The kids were ecstatic about the cookie decorating station, many choosing to smother their cookies with an array of colorful sprinkles. It was an excellent way to end the year!

We're busy and bustling with holiday cheer at BBBSCR! This week, volunteers from Paxton Presbyterian Church hosted a special pop-up Santa Shop for our Littles, giving them a chance to shop for free holiday gifts for their families.

We are so thankful to the Paxton Presbyterian Church members for donating a wide variety of heartwarming holiday gifts, setting up shop, and assisting our youth with selecting and wrapping gifts. Our Littles were so excited to pick out gifts for their family members and Bigs.

Special thanks to our Youth Advisory Board Members for volunteering your time to set up, clean up and help our Littles shop!
