Today, Sen. Steve Santarsiero issued an open letter to the Pennsylvania Senate criticizing Republican plans to introduce a bill would ban drag shows on public property or in areas where minors could see.

"No LGBTQ+ child in this country should have to live with the hate that has been unleashed here. I only hope that as members of our State Senate, we can rise above ignorance and remember that we have a special obligation to stand up for the most vulnerable members of our society."

The abortion rights established by Roe v. Wade 50 years ago were stolen from us last June.

The US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe opened the floodgates to allow states across the country to ban abortion and created our current national health crisis. In Pennsylvania, Republicans have worked hard to try to ban abortions.

While this Roe Anniversary marks a reminder of what we’ve lost, this is also a reminder that Roe was always the floor, not the ceiling. Now, we must reimagine what is possible for our communities.

We must develop a vision for the future that centers on those historically left behind and creates a more equitable health care landscape for all.

01/16/2023

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an active advocate for criminal justice reform. Not only did he fight against racial discrimination and injustice, but he explicitly spoke against systemic problems within the criminal justice system.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King began his fight for justice decades ago. While progress within our criminal justice system has been made, there is more work to be done.

Pennsylvania Senate Democrats are committed to following in the footsteps of Dr. King and other leaders, protestors, and advocates and continuing the fight for criminal justice reform.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader for civil rights and justice, and for peaceful resolution to conflict. He believed in nonviolence.

The lessons Dr. King spoke and demonstrated with his own peaceful actions can still inspire communities today, especially as they work to come together to stop senseless gun violence.

“…Violence merely increases hate... Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, Pennsylvania Senate Democrats celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and his leadership. We follow his lead in the work we do to ensure community safety and peace.

To stop gun violence, we will continue to fight for common sense gun reform and advocate for investments in mental health care at the community level and in our schools, as well as funding for evidence-based programs that address community violence, including hate crimes.

01/16/2023

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led great change for voting rights in America. He positioned voting rights at the center of his civil rights movement because he believed that the ability to vote gave great power to the people.

"So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote I do not possess myself. I cannot make up my mind — it is made up for me..." ¬– Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, the fight for voter protection and sustained voting rights continues.

In Pennsylvania, state Senate Democrats continue to defend voting rights and stop the senseless undermining of our commonwealth’s democratic process. We fight in honor of Dr. King and all leaders, protestors, and advocates who put so much on the line to contribute to our democracy and equality in our voting system.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in equitable opportunities for all, including in education. He noted that education is vital for both our minds and moral character.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education.” -Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, Pennsylvania Senate Democrats celebrate the legacy of Dr.King and his profound influence. We follow his lead in the work we do for equitable education and many other issues concerning justice and civil rights in Pennsylvania.

We will continue to fight for:
• Fair and sufficient state school funding for all zip codes
• Accessible higher education for more Pennsylvanians
• Emergency repairs and renovations public school building
• And other issues that ensure learning equity and opportunity

Does anyone know of Dem or Republican members of PA House or Senate who are NOT planning to run for reelection? I know that Representatives Brian Sims and Malcolm Kenyatta are planning to run for higher office. If you know of others who plan to run for higher office, change careers, or retire, let me know please. I am drafting maps for consideration in redistricting, and I would like to try to avoid drawing two incumbents into the same district.
What plan does the Dem Caucus have to squelch a Rethugnicant "fraudit"?
PA Senate, could you Kindly look at this. I believe there was bias in court that led to excessive verdict. If anyone would like to explore further we are open to any support. We have no reason to slander those who worked this case, but in this instance I believe bias led to a disproportionate outcome. Even the victims family support brothers innocence. I can send much more if anyone would like more. https://www.change.org/ExonerateMikeSwift We are grateful to any reply, and sharing of this effort among the senate.

Can anyone let me know what's going on with SB 350
Thank you for the public hearing today. Greatly appreciated the space being created to share stories and suggest solutions. Looking forward to what is to come from the future.
Is it at all possible to find one democrat who says you know what I’m not okay with the way things are happening in this country. Can we find one who has the courage to stand up and say I’m not okay with canceling the keystone pipeline and putting thousands of Americans out of work and destroying America’s energy independence. Can we find one who’s not afraid of saying this “covid relief bill” isn’t really helping Americans. It’s more of a wish list for democrats and their special interests in big businesse and foreign countries. Can one democrat open their eyes and see what’s happening at our southern border and say “ I’m not okay with that” this borders crisis is and will hurt our country. Can one democrat please have the courage and guts to say these policies and issues being put forward are hurting Americans and destroying our beloved country. Could one democrat please step forward and be the hero this country needs right now. Please do the right thing for America. Please do the right thing for the American people. We need a courageous hero to step forward and be that person who saves America. Be that person who goes down in history as the savior of this great nation. Do the right thing for a change and not what the establishment tells you to do.
