When HACC alumna Winfred Fox was attending HACC to earn her nursing degree, she shared that her mother is her biggest hero: “She taught me by her own example how to become an excellent nurse. She never went to nursing school but she was a nurse in the village where there was no doctors. She spent her free time looking after others, and went an extra mile to ease other people’s sufferings.” Winfred clearly takes after her mother. While at HACC, she raised funds to repair her former elementary school in Kenya.

Looking to the future, Winfred said that “education for the poor and the less privileged” matters most to her. “If we can educate the poor, then we solve a lot of global health issues. There are many medical conditions associated with poverty and ignorance, and they could be avoided.” In celebration of #BlackHeritageMonth, we celebrate you, Winfred! #HACCproud #HACCalumni #BlackHistoryMonth #NursesRule

HACC alumnus Michael Powell started at HACC when he was 51 years old as a newlywed and new father of a four-year old. He shared, “school had changed vastly in the thirty-plus years since I had left the formal learning environment.” At first, he rode his bike from Midtown to the #HACCharrisburg campus, but with the help of the KEYS program, he was able to get a monthly bus pass and additional support for his daughter while he attended HACC full-time. His hard work paid off as he made the Dean’s list more than once! In celebration of #BlackHeritageMonth, we are #HACCproud of you, Michael! #BlackHistoryMonth #HACCalumni

As a single parent, #HACCfoundation Board Vice Chair La-Verna Fountain said that she remembered “walking through the doors at HACC and being scared to death.” But she knew “I wanted my child to be proud of me… If there’s a way for me to improve my life, I have to start with education.” La-Verna’s start at HACC led her to bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a leadership position at Columbia University.

We are so grateful and #HACCproud that La-Verna returned to HACC to donate her time to guide our foundation. In celebration of #BlackHeritageMonth, we celebrate you, La-Verna! Watch La-Verna’s story here: http://bit.ly/37pfw22 #HACCalumni #BlackHistoryMonth #SingleParentsRule

We are #HACCproud of Tanishia not only because of her journey and amazing outlook, but because she is one of the faces of our marketing campaign. Tanishia knows that setbacks in life have a way of molding you into the person you’re meant to be. After graduating from high school, Tanishia became pregnant and had to put her dreams on hold to be a mom. Instead of letting setbacks limit her, she said, “Each situation has pushed me to want more for myself and for my children.”

After graduating from HACC, Tanishia plans to become a victim/wellness advocate and potentially earn her bachelor’s degree. She wants to “show others that no matter what happens, YOU have the final say in what happens in YOUR life!”

If you would like to share your inspiration with others, please visit www.hacc.edu/stories.

HACC alumna Lindsay Snowden was a licensed practical nurse for 20 years before coming to HACC to take on a career that can change lives in a different way. She graduated with a degree in home and building remodeling. “Rehabbing and flipping houses is my passion; obtaining and rehabbing a building to use as a homeless shelter for LGBT teens is my dream.” In celebration of #BlackHeritageMonth, we celebrate you, Lindsay, and are #HACCproud to help achieve YOUR dream. #HACCalumni #BlackHistoryMonth #ReachYOURdream http://bit.ly/37eM3Yz

Dr. Morris-Priester is a HACC alumna who personifies perseverance. In celebration of #BlackHeritageMonth, we celebrate you, Dr. Morris-Priester!

Growing up in the projects of Harrisburg, Karen remembers watching in awe as doctors cared for her ailing grandmother. At that moment, she decided she would someday join their ranks. She didn’t start her college education at HACC until age 30, but she persevered, and became the first grandmother to graduate from Yale Medical School in 2007.

We are not only #HACCproud of what HACC alumna Dr. Karen Morris Priester has accomplished personally and professionally, we are so grateful of the way she willingly shares her story with other students, alumni and community members. If want some inspiration, please read her story at http://bit.ly/36YUNBV. While coaching high school basketball, Joseph Proctor always encouraged his players to go on to college. One day, he decided to practice what he preached, and we are #HACCproud that he did! He is putting his HACC, bachelor’s and master’s degrees to work teaching high school students math and supporting youth in our community.
