On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, A Woman's Work: The NFL'S Cheerleader Problem, a women-led production at 7 PM ET/ 4 PM PT. The Coalition of Labor Union Women is co-sponsoring the film event, A Woman's Work: The NFL'S Cheerleader Problem, with the DC Labor Fest. The film highlights the continued fight to close the gender pay gap in the National Football League. For over 50 years, the NFL has employed cheerleaders while not paying them fairly, earning as little as $5 an hour to some not being paid a salary at all. The women employed are also expected to meet high beauty and body standards. A Woman's Work: The NFL's Cheerleader Problems follows the brave journey of cheerleaders from the Oakland Raiders and the Buffalo Bills, risking their careers to take legal action and fight for fair pay!

Today, the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) is celebrating Women's History Month! Initially, the month started as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, CA. In 1978, the California Commission on the Status of Women had a Women's History Week, coinciding with International Women's Day on March 8. Across the nation, communities have celebrated the importance of preserving herstory.

In 1980, the National Women’s History Project, a coalition of women historians and women-led organizations, lobbied successfully for a Women's History Week in the United States. Congress officially recognized the persistence of the women who fought their voices to be heard by passing Public Law 100-9, designating March as Women’s History Month in 1987. In honor of the women who fought and persisted for Women's History Month, we will commemorate a woman every day throughout March.

Today, we will celebrate Barbara Jordan (1936-1996), the first African American woman elected to the state senate in Texas and the first southern African American woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a lawyer and congresswoman, she always fought for civil rights and dignity for all Americans. She established minimum wage laws, anti-discrimination policies in the workplace, and the Fair Employment Practices Commission in Texas. During her time at Congress, she was an essential voice with President Richard Nixon's impeachment. At CLUW, we are very honored to celebrate and honor Barbara Jordan.

Please stay tuned for upcoming events celebrating herstories and actions to uplift women across the nation.

Thank you for reading and celebrating Women's History Month with CLUW.

The Central PA Chapter of CLUW is going outside the box this year with our Community Service project and holding a "pick up" donation drive! Labor has always been a driving force in community support and in these times we need to get creative on how we can continue to offer support to those in need. We will be collecting donations for the Shalom House from now until April 2nd, to donate to this cause reach out to Angela or Karla (numbers are on the flyer) and schedule a porch pick up of any items you are able to provide! CLUW has lost another Shero in the Labor movement!

NEB Sisters and Brothers,

We are very saddened to inform you of the passing of Yvette Martin-Gross on Friday, June 8th. Our sister was an active AFGE member (local 631), long-time member of CLUW's National Executive Board, and member of the DC Metro DC Chapter. She had served as the American Federation of Government Employees 14th District National Women's Advisory Coordinator, the Women’s and Fair Practice’s Representative to Public Services International, Interim AFGE Council 1 President and was also active in the DC Chapter of CBTU.

Our dear sister will be sorely missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends at this sad time.

We will inform you of the funeral arrangements when they become known.

Thank you.

The past week's political firestorm has focused on stay-at-home moms. But more than 70 percent of women with young children now work. And they're hoping the presidential candidates address some of the challenges they face balancing a job with kids.
