Report shows 21 percent increase in LGBTQ elected officials

“The number of openly LGBTQ elected officials in the United States increased by 21 percent over the past year: "Allied elected officials are critically important. But when LGBTQ elected officials are in the halls of power, they change the hearts and minds of their lawmaker colleagues, defeat anti-LGBTQ bills, and inspire more inclusive legislation."

The report did not show an increase in representation for trans men, however, representation for trans women grew increased by 40 percent.

As Chick-fil-A expands globally and into more liberal parts of the U.S., the chicken chain plans to change which charities it donates to after years of bad press and protests from the LGBT community.

Beginning next year, Chick-fil-A will move away from its current philanthropic structure, Bisnow has learned. After donating to more than 300 charitable organizations this year, the Atlanta-based fast-food chain will instead focus on three initiatives with one accompanying charity each: education, homelessness and hunger.

The new giving structure moves away from the multiyear commitments Chick-fil-A had with the Salvation Army and the FCA and focuses on annual grants, which Tassopoulos said will be reviewed and assessed each year. Future partners could include faith-based and non-faith-based charities, but the company said none of the organizations have anti-LGBT positions.

The PA Commission on LGBTQ Affairs , has organized a lobbying day in support of nondiscrimination legislation on October 22nd.

One of the most pressing initiatives that the commission is tackling right now is nondiscrimination within the legislature, and they'd love our help in the following ways:

1. Do you want to meet with your State Senator to tell them how important this is to you?
2. Can you spread the word and tell people about the rally?
3. Can you come and bring friends?

Is 2019 the year Pa. gives LGBTQ+ people discrimination protection?

“It’s called the Fairness Act. Rep. Dan Frankel, an Allegheny County Democrat, is its longtime sponsor. In the memo for his latest attempt, filed earlier this month, he wrote that in “prior years, this legislation has not received a vote despite overwhelming bipartisan support.”

Like most states, Pennsylvania has a statute that grants certain groups of people extra legal protection against discrimination. It’s called the Human Relations Act. One group it misses? LGBTQ+ people.
