League of Women Voters of the Harrisburg Area

League of Women Voters of the Harrisburg Area We make democracy work. The non-partisan League of Women Voters studies and acts on issues of public concern selected by its membership. The League encourages citizens to register to vote, to learn about issues, to evaluate candidates, to vote, and to take an active role in the political process.
(1)

We are supported by the dues of members and by public-spirited men and women who consider their contributions an investment in democracy. Membership in the League of Women Voters is open to all, men and women, at least 16 years of age.

Mission: LET PEOPLE KNOW. MAKE PEOPLE CARE. HELP PEOPLE ACT. The League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV does not support or oppose any political party or candidate but does — and always has — taken stands on issues its members have studied. The purpose is to create in citizens a sense of responsibility for its nation’s problems. Through research and advocacy, LWV seeks to encourage the informed citizen who actively participates in government.

2 important voting tips from Spotlight PA today:

1 - Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline to request a mail-in ballot. If you already have one, officials are urging you to mail it immediately. With ongoing court challenges, there is no guarantee mail-in ballots will be counted if they arrive after Nov. 3.

2 - It may seem innocent enough, but if your neighbor offers to take your ballot to a local drop box or election office, just say no. In Pennsylvania, third-party ballot delivery is not allowed, unless the voter has a disability or emergency.

URGENT! The Online PA Mail-In Ballot Application in it's current form requires voters to have a PennDOT ID or driver's license to apply. Many eligible youth do not yet have state ID and must instead download and print a paper form which allows voters to enter their Social Security Number. However, with schools closed due to COVID-19, many students lack access to a printer. Please sign and share our letter to the PA Department of State asking for an immediate change to the Online Mail-In Ballot Application!
On March 25th the South Bend, Indiana chapter of the League underwrote a radio play on WVPE entitled "Happy Family". Based on actual events, the play tells the story of a group of 1970s working women who sued a major corporation for equal pay and equal opportunity. They had to cope with high priced corporate lawyers, company spies and violence, but in the end they won. If any of your members would like to listen to the play, it is available at no charge as a podcast series on all the major platforms - Spotify, i-Tunes podcast, SoundCloud, etc. It is also available on the WVPE website. Please accept my thanks for your time and attention. Roy Schreiber
