Linn Run State Park recently hosted The PA Outdoor Corps Trail Crew for a Rock and Rigging Training. The training focused on building sustainable trail structures with rock.

The crew worked on a section of the popular Adams Falls Trail. This section is heavily eroded with a grade of over 25%. The goal of the project was to use rocks to overcome the grade, mitigate erosion, and ultimately make the trail safer for visitors.

The first half of the training focused on moving large rocks by hand. Instructors taught the crew about how to choose rocks for trail work, mechanical advantage, team lifting, and how to properly set stones. The second half of the training focused on using a Grip Hoist and rigging equipment to aid in moving rocks.

During the training, the Trail Crew was able to construct a crib wall to stabilize an eroding stream bank and begin work on a rock staircase, setting a total of five steps. Additional PA crews will continue to work on this trail project throughout the season.

Knowing how to read trail blazes is key to staying safe while exploring Pennsylvania’s great outdoors! 🌲

Trail blazes are painted symbols that help guide you along the way. Each pattern tells you something different about where the trail goes.

Here are a few of the most common blazes you’ll spot in our state parks and what each one means. 👇

Sometimes healing looks like quiet water, fresh air, and a moment to reset.

This , we’re highlighting how Pennsylvania State Parks can support mental wellness and recovery from substance use disorder through time spent outdoors.

Through Recovery in Nature, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvanians are discovering parks, trails, and waterways that encourage movement, connection, and reflection.
