Thanks to our dedicated volunteers and staff, 57 state parks monitored 2,896 man-made cavities (including nest boxes, gourds, and purple martin houses) and fledged more than 9,800 birds, including eastern bluebirds, purple martins, tree swallows, wood ducks, kestrels, and several other species.

Last year provided many challenges, as the birds (and monitors) dealt with a variety of extreme weather conditions across the state, including cooler spring temperatures, abnormally dry conditions, tornados, severe storms, and smoke from Canadian wildfires, which greatly affected hatching and fledging success rates.

Beavers have been hard at work to prepare for harsh winter conditions by stocking up on a reliable food source -- trees!

When the water freezes and there is little vegetation to eat, beavers rely on food stored under the ice.

Look for chewed stumps from small trees that beavers have stored underwater for winter.

In fall and winter, opossums devote twice as much time to feeding and improving their nests as compared to the rest of the year.

This is because opossums do not hibernate but will den up during cold or snowy periods.

They are mostly nocturnal, but sometimes can be seen foraging by day, looking to eat whatever they can find.

It’s that time of year again when the evergreens of the forest really begin to pop! Look out for ground pine -- also called princess pine -- along hiking trails at state parks.

These small plants are types of club mosses that grow from creeping stems called rhizomes, which generally produce one upright shoot per year.

The name Nockamixon comes from the Lenape phrase “nocha-miska-ing” meaning “at the place of soft soil.”

Several Lenape tribes have been documented as living in what is now the park.

Hiking Nockamixon State Park trails really highlights this—they are quite muddy after rainstorms!
