Jennings Environmental Education Center is one of several state parks specifically dedicated to providing environmental education and recreational programs to the community.

One of the park’s main features, the 20-acre prairie ecosystem, is home to distinctive prairie plants and the endangered massasauga rattlesnake. The most noteworthy and spectacular prairie flower is the blazing star.

Jennings was the first reserve established in Pennsylvania to protect an individual plant species and remains the only public and protected prairie in the commonwealth. Learn more ➡️ https://bit.ly/3urionW

Blooming in spring, the trout lily -- named for its leaf markings which resemble brook trout -- can be found in moist, shaded habitats in Pennsylvania’s forests.

This solitary, nodding, yellow flower is often found in clumps thanks to the help of ants which carry its seeds away, eating the fleshy attachment, and helping to spread the lily’s range. #SignsofSpring #SpringinPA

While walking along trails at Pennsylvania state parks, these dainty little flowers may catch your eye -- Eastern spring beauty!

These delicate wildflowers can dot the forest floor bringing much needed color to the forest during spring.

The flowers open up on warm sunny days, and close during cloudy weather or at night, and are often abundant in moist woodlands from March to May. #SignsOfSpring #SpringinPA

Many visitors to Pennsylvania state parks may already be spotting one of the first signs of spring -- skunk cabbage! Look for skunk cabbage in wet areas, such as the swampy spots around streams and ponds.

This hardy wildflower is one of the first to emerge in early spring, producing enough heat to melt their way through any snow that may be left from colder months. #SignsOfSpring #SpringinPA

In 1979, DCNR’s first sustainable energy system was installed at Mt. Pisgah State Park. A solar heating system was installed on the park office roof to conserve heating fuel. ☀️

Keeping with a legacy of leading in environmental practices, DCNR’s replaced that system with a new solar shingle system on the park office in 2018. #SolarAppreciationDay #Sustainability

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission

Warmer temperatures are coming, which means ice conditions can change quickly.
Before going out on the ice, check out these safety tips from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission ⤵️

Is the ice safe? What are signs of weak or deteriorating ice conditions? What should you do if you fall through the ice? This video covers each topic and provides recommendations for being safe on the ice.

When travelling on ice, follow these recommendations:
• Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.

• Assess ice characteristics and conditions from shore before you ever venture onto the ice. Heed all warning signs of weak or deteriorating ice.

• Probe ice with a pole and continuously check thickness. The general thickness guideline for one person travelling on ice is a minimum of 4 inches of clear ice. (Ice Thickness Guidelines Chart: https://www.fishandboat.com/Boat/WaterandIceSafety/Documents/ice_thickness.pdf)

• Wear a life jacket or float coat and appropriate thermal protection for conditions.

• Carry a set of ice awls to aid getting out of the water. (Ice Awls: https://www.fishandboat.com/Boat/WaterandIceSafety/Documents/iceawls.pdf)

• Have a throw bag/rope to use for rescue.

• If the ice begins to crack, immediately lay down and crawl back in the direction from which you came.

• If you fall through the ice, face the direction from which you just came. Kick your legs to propel yourself and pull using your ice awls to get onto the ice surface. Roll away from the hole and crawl to safety.

• If you witness someone fall through the ice, CALL 911 for help.
