In Pennsylvania, there are more than 52,000 farms spanning over 7.3 million acres across the state. With this abundance of resources, there should be no reason food waste or for anyone to be struggling with hunger.

This #NationalFarmersDay, we want to recognize our relationships in the agriculture community for allowing Feeding Pennsylvania’s food banks to rescue surplus food for our clients and prevent food waste while supporting Pennsylvania farmers, processors, and distributors.

Today, Feeding PA and the MARC team hosted Don Mahaney, owner of Scratch & Co in Pittsburgh, to talk about opportunities to process surplus products for the charitable food network.

Scratch & Co operates using local farm product and is expanding into processing farm veg into shelf stable product, some of which is rescued.

We love the opportunity to discuss innovative ways to get more fresh product into the hands of families in need.

Yesterday, we joined Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Westmoreland Food Bank at Pleasant Lane Farms to take a tour of the facilities and discuss the ongoing relationship that they have with the food bank.

Pleasant Lane Farm began making cheese in the spring of 2020 and producing cheese for the Westmoreland County Food Bank with funding through the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS) program. The Food Bank’s purchase of Pleasant Lane cheese with PASS provides predictable income for Pleasant Lane, allowing the farm to further build their brand, expand their customer base, expand operations, and hire new employees.

📢 Take Action Now! bit.ly/3DtNCAa

Kids across #Pennsylvania have headed back to their classrooms — some for the first time since school closures in March 2020. But while we prepare for another uncertain school year, there’s one thing we know for sure: kids learn better when they’re well-nourished.

Tell Congress: You have the power to provide kids enough to eat by expanding the Summer/Pandemic-EBT program — a program that provides food assistance to children who are low-income in schools, even during closures like so many experienced during the pandemic and in the summer. #endhunger
