Here’s to our young women who are about to begin grinding through school in uncertain and unusual times, and to all the young women we’ve worked with who are now living successful, fulfilling lives.

Today is Parents’ Day in the United States! Parents’ Day-- although a young and lesser-known commemorative holiday for mothers and fathers-- still makes the perfect occasion for those who may have missed out on spending Father’s Day or Mother’s Day with their parents.

Meaningful relationships are very important in ensuring academic success and attendance for young adults and children, so we always love to shout out family holidays!

We are happy to announce that our team at Greater Johnstown Elementary has secured a partnership with Head Start and Vision to Learn.

Help from local organizations such as these is what allows us to uphold our mission statement and continue to support children in our PA communities.

In cased you missed it, we recently shared an informative article from the New York Times which mentions Communities in Schools as an organization which supports the message of #blacklivesmatter and helps establish equality for all students.

Additionally, with COVID-19 as a growing threat once again, many communities are in dangerous positions and need your support. The school year may be over, but we need your help.

Learn more about how you can support Communities In Schools and other great organizations who support #blacklivesmatter and racial equality in Nicholas Kristof’s New York Times newsletter https://cisnational.org/3iedqpp

Our team at Johnstown Middle School has been gathering lots of donations!

As you can see, this makes for a quite a clutter when end-of-the-school-year reports are due and the team has just moved into a new office 😆

In light of recent circumstances regarding discrimination, division, and inequity across our society, we at Communities in Schools of Pennsylvania have decided it is important to reflect on the impact that the past few weeks of unity and demonstration have had in the U.S.

In the wake of protests and civil rights movements within the past few weeks, Juneteenth --a 155-year-old holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the U.S.-- has been officially recognized as a holiday by Pennsylvania. It is important to remember that whether an official holiday or not, Juneteenth can be looked at as a time worth celebrating and sharing with others.

We hope that the children we mentor and the communities they will uphold as adults will continue to celebrate holidays such as this, and that more importantly, they will have the ability to profoundly impact their communities through unity and justice.

For the 2020 fifth grade graduation at Northwest Elementary, our very own Miss Tonoco, 'Ms. T', provided a Hershey’s Chocolate Bar donation through United Way of Lebanon County. Her coordination helped ensure that the fifth graders received a congratulatory gift bag for their hard work.

Congratulations and best of luck to all the kids who are now moving on from elementary school!

*It is never too early to gather and donate winter clothes*

For those looking to make a practical impact in their community, consider donating winter clothes to your local schools and charitable organizations. If you wish to donate previously used winter clothes, be sure to check varying organizations' donation eligibility policies in response to COVID-19,

Thank you to Tim Grose, our Community School Director of Greater Johnstown Elementary, for getting the ball rolling. Hopefully, with your help, this small stack of clothes will grow into a large selection of various sizes and styles so all kids can enjoy playing in the snow, and more importantly, have their basic needs met in the final months of this year and first few months of 2021.

-

(Additional food for thought: June may solely mark the rise of summer’s beautiful weather for some, but for others it also means that in only a few months, Pennsylvania will inevitably return to frigid fall/winter seasons-- seasons which some individuals know they may not be prepared for. For children in need of warm clothing during the change of seasons, these donations are welcomed at any time of year.)

While social distancing, some individuals may understandably feel disconnected from their work life. Thankfully, we have staff who are excited and passionate about getting back to their offices in preparation for the coming school year (with safe social distancing, of course.)

Shout out to Tim, who works at our Johnstown Branch, for visiting a school of ours to work on a few projects and prepare for his coming efforts. This is the type of enthusiasm we expect from all our staff and we are proud to have a team full of members like him .

A Statement from CIS National President and CEO Rey Saldaña : Communities In Schools

Please read this statement from our National President and CEO, Rey Saldana, about the horrific death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police, and the resulting wave of protests across the nation. These events are a painful reminder of the racial disparities that face our youth on a daily basis, adding additional barriers to staying in school and achieving in life. CISPA is #allinforkids, and stands alongside our students and families of color who are being affected by these current events. We are committed to acknowledging the pain and anger felt by our students and families of color, as well as our staff, volunteers and partners. Together, we can work to change this system that is so flawed, so that our students can celebrate their diversity and experience equity.

The horrific death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and resulting wave of protests across the country reminds us of a painful truth about our nation’s past and indeed the current times we live in. At Communities In Schools® (CIS™), the majority of students we serve are childre...

We are missing all of our students very much! #Tbt to a sweet moment shared by our site coordinator, Leyna

"My student Isabel was having a rough day, I let her come down to my office, gave her a book from my book shelf and a healthy snack and just let her decompress for 30 minutes. Sometimes its not what you say, its just having a safe place to go during those moments when you feel like you just can't go on." #allinforkids

This past Friday in York, we received 360 emergency food boxes from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Our staff spent most of last week contacting families to see who had a need for food assistance, with the help of their school leadership and social workers. Friday afternoon, our staff delivered boxes to families without transportation - dropping them at their front door.

On Saturday morning, our staff convened at William Penn High School to distribute the rest of the boxes - families arrived in vehicles and they were distributed in a drive-through line to reduce contact. The school district supported this by providing School Resource Officers to help direct traffic, and the high school football team even volunteered to help.

It was a true collaborative effort to get these boxes distributed so that students and families in need had access to food over the weekend.

In schools to help kids stay in school.

Communities in Schools of Pennsylvania (CISPA) ensures all students have what they need to stay in school and on a path to a brighter future. Working directly inside school and community sites across central Pennsylvania, we connect kids to caring adults and community resources designed to help them succeed in school and life. With a proven mix of evidence-based practice and human capital, we do whatever it takes to empower kids to realize their full potential.
