Working Together to Keep Our Island Beautiful!
HISCFA Adopt-A-Highway Program
For the past 18 years, since February 2008, HISCFA has proudly sponsored a 3-mile stretch of M-154 along the South Channel through Michigan’s Adopt-A-Highway program. This cost-free program through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) helps keep our state’s highways clean and attractive. Since 1990, volunteer groups across Michigan have collected more than one million bags of trash, with over 2,800 groups currently caring for more than 6,400 miles of highway statewide.
Each year, MDOT designates two one-week periods for sponsor groups to complete their roadside cleanups. Safety vests and trash bags are provided, and once the cleanup is complete, MDOT collects the filled bags within a few days.
A special thank you goes out to the four volunteers who gathered at St. Mark Church on May 30 for this year’s cleanup. While participation was lighter than usual, the volunteers covered the entire route on a beautiful 60-degree day filled with sunshine and a light breeze, making the work a little easier and a lot more enjoyable.
You can spot HISCFA’s official Adopt-A-Highway sign at the sharp bend on M-154 near Green Drive. M-154 has been part of Harsens Island since 1931 and is one of only three Michigan trunkline highways located on islands. The others are M-134, which connects to Drummond Island by ferry across the DeTour Passage, and M-185, the well-known highway that circles Mackinac Island.
In coordination with HISCFA’s Adopt-A-Highway cleanup, a neighborhood volunteer group also conducts a roadside cleanup from the end of M-154 down to the turnaround. Together, these annual efforts help give our island roadsides a clean, fresh start heading into another summer season.
