I had the honor of delivering these remarks at Hillside Intermediate School’s Memorial Day ceremony on Friday.

Today, we remember the men and women who gave everything for our country — and we remember that their stories live on as long as we continue to say their names. 🇺🇸

I had the privilege of attending a Memorial Day ceremony this morning at Hillside Intermediate School, where students and teachers organized a fitting and respectful tribute honoring the men and women of our armed forces, both those who are with us today, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The program was incredibly well done and I shared the story of Naugatuck native, Private First Class Harold Wooster, who was killed in World War II during the intense battle of Iwo Jima. Pfc. Harold was a Naugatuck student, worked in a foundry in Waterbury before the war, was a husband, and tragically died defending our country. Sharing his story is an important way we can keep his name alive through remembrances like today’s ceremony.

Students also took time to read the names of family members who have served or are currently serving, recognized the veterans in attendance, and delivered a tribute that included the playing of “Taps.” A wreath was placed, and an empty chair and table were set to symbolize those who never returned home, a simple but powerful reminder of the true cost of our freedom. It’s always encouraging to see young people take such care in honoring our military members and I appreciate their work.

As we approach Memorial Day, I encourage everyone to take a moment this weekend to reflect on what this day truly means. Beyond the gatherings and the long weekend, it is a time to honor the courage, sacrifice, and devotion of those who gave everything for our country. Below, are pictures from the event, and a picture of Pfc. Wooster.

As Ranking Member of the Higher Education Committee, I wanted to address the recent news of CSCU Chancellor John Maduko’s resignation and the news today that Marty Guay has resigned as the chair of the Connecticut Board of Regents for Higher Education.

The allegations involving Mr. Maduko are very troubling and raise serious concerns about accountability and oversight within the CSCU system. Students, faculty, staff, and taxpayers deserve a system that operates with complete integrity and accountability, and where leadership is professional and operates with the utmost respect.

Though Mr. Guay has resigned, I still have concerns about the broader management issues that keep occurring within the system, and those are combined with the recent audit findings involving payroll errors, excessive administrative leave payments, and transparency issues that keep coming up.

Given these continual headlines surrounding CSCU, the legislature may need to consider an oversight hearing to fully examine these issues and determine what reforms may be necessary moving forward, but I will work with the committee chairs to make that determination.

The complaint claims former CSCU Chancellor John Maduko sent unwanted sexual messages and comments to a female employee over two years.

Today is Sine Die, the last day of the legislative session, when everything wraps up at midnight.

It’s a long day at the Capitol, and it has been a long legislative session, yet there are still important decisions to be made. I’ve stayed focused on pushing for accountability, bringing down the costs that are hitting every family in our state and the commonsense policies that make sense for Connecticut residents.

We’ll be working right up until the final gavel falls and you can watch the last day on www.CT-N.com.

Naugatuck is getting over $1.8M in additional funding — that’s why I voted yes.

But I still have real concerns about the long-term direction of the state budget.

Energy policy isn’t always easy to follow, but this one matters.

Here’s a simple breakdown of HB 5340 that could impact your electric bill — and why I voted no.

I had the privilege of welcoming students and staff from Naugatuck Youth Services to the Capitol today.

I brought the group onto the House floor so they could see the Chamber from my seat, and we had a great conversation about how bills become laws. We also visited the Senate Chamber, where I shared a piece of Connecticut history—the legend of the Charter Oak, when the state’s Constitution was hidden in a tree to keep it from being stolen. That same tree later provided the wood used to craft the Lieutenant Governor’s chair on the dais.

Opportunities like this, sharing both the process and the history behind our Capitol, are one of the parts of this job I enjoy most!

(Note: today is dress down day at the Capitol. We pay to dress down to raise money for charity, which is why I'm not in my usual shirt and tie!)
