I'm very proud of my colleague Meghan Selinger for drafting and sharing these poignant words that sum what I'm feeling as a school board member right now:

"Tonight I wish to make remarks on behalf of the Minnetonka School Board at large.

We want to acknowledge the challenging times our community and greater Minnesota are facing and that we have community members who are hurting and who are scared. We are heartened to see the way our community has come together to support each other.

Schools are critical to society and every child deserves an education. We stand with others who have called for our government to reinstate the decades-old protected areas policy and to keep immigration enforcement away from schools and bus stops. Kids cannot learn and teachers cannot teach effectively if they don’t feel safe. Every child should be able to get to school safely, focus on their classes, eat lunch with their friends, and play at recess without fear.

Thank you."

Public libraries are sacred spaces, just like public schools, and it's extremely disturbing and disheartening to see masked federal agents detaining individuals in one of our temples of knowledge. Our libraries, as free public spaces, are open to all our neighbors to indulge their curiosities, access community resources, and find relief from the elements. Unfortunately, as public spaces not officially considered "sensitive locations," that means masked agents can also freely enter these spaces without a judicial warrant.

Thankfully, however, our public schools are spaces where a reasonable expectation of privacy still exists for students and staff, and a judicial warrant is required for federal agents to gain entry absent exigent circumstances. That doesn't mean members of our community aren't frightened or intimidated, and rightly so. Minnetonka Schools maintains a web page with resources for families and individuals concerned about the uptick of federal action in our communities here: https://www.minnetonkaschools.org/federalchangesresources.

We continue to follow the sound legal guidance of the Minnesota Department of Education and our state's Attorney General, and our commitment to looking out for the well-being of our community members is one of our most important goals. Please reach out if you have any ideas or further resources for community members navigating these troubling times.
