β€œLight In the Darkness” (Good News In Bad Times)
Isaiah 9:1, 10:22, 27:9, 29:18, 53:3-12

A. A dark world:
1. Israel’s world in Isaiah’s day – pretty dark
a. much of what one reads in Isaiah 1-29 = dark
b. announced judgments and punishment, war
and destruction, death and captivity
c. God’s announcements were proven out in history:
attacks by Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia,
Greece, Rome to get their attention
d. Israelites persisted in their darkness
2. Jesus’ world – pretty dark
a. not received, hated by his own people (Jn 1:11)
b. they tried to kill him, plotted to kill him (Mark
11:18, 14:1)
c. arrested him, accusing him of religious crimes
(blasphemy, John 10:33), treason (Lk 23:2-3)
d. beat him, slapped him, and kept on beating him
(Mark 14:65, 15:19)
e. put a crown of thorns on his head and beat him
on the head (Mark 15:19)
f. spit on him, kept on spitting (Mark 14:65, 15:19)
g. condemned and killed him as a criminal, hanging
him between 2 thieves (Mark 15:27-32)
h. while he was hanging on the cross, mocked and
insulted him (Mark 15:29-30)
i. the day, even though it was midday, grew dark
around Jesus while on the cross, a great
earthquake (Mark 15:33)
j. he died quickly (John 19:31-34)
k. all this judgment and punishment, excruciating
pain, darkness, was because of his crimes
- he was without sin (2 Cor. 5:21, Heb. 4:15)
- he kept God’s commandments (John 8:28,
12:49, 14:31)
- his death was not for his sins, but for ours
(Isaiah 53:3-12)
- And because He did this, a light from God
shines into the darkness of this world, into
the darkness of our lives!

B. A light shining in the darkness:
1. β€œNevertheless, there will be no more gloom ...
The people walking in darkness have seen a
great light” (prophesied, Isaiah 9:1-2; stated,
Matthew 4:13-16).
2. The deaf will hear and the blind will see (Isaiah
29:18, 35:5; Matthew 11:5).
3. God will forgive sins (for Israel: Isaiah 27:9;
Romans 11:25-27; for all who believe: John
3:16, Rom. 5:8).
4. God will have a remnant, faithful followers,
even among gentiles (Isaiah 10:22; Romans
9:23-28).
5. This mighty work was done through Jesus: a
precious cornerstone (Isaiah 28:16; 1 Peter
2:6).
a. β€œthere is no other name under heaven
given to men by which we must be
saved.” (Acts 4:12)
b. β€œif the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus
from the dead is living in you, He . . . will
also give life to (you)” (Romans 8:11).
c. Christ the Lord is risen today!

Do you believe?

Today is Good Friday! Please join me in a devotional, reflecting on what Jesus' followers were experiencing, struggling with losing Him. I will be reading from Luke 24.

Reflection for Good Friday

Thinking about what Jesus' followers were experiencing as they lost Him to the crowd and the grave.

04/05/2020

My apologies: there is an error in my last post. There is a "shelter-in-place" order, not "sheer-in-place" order.

04/05/2020

Our stewardship focus for the month of April is:
God uses money to illustrate His power.
β€œβ€˜Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse,
that there may be food in my house.
Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty” (Mal. 3:10).

Just a word regarding tithes and offerings: We will not be having anyone standing at the doors of the church to receive your offerings onto the Lord, due to the "sheer-in-place" order.
We have been encouraged that folks have considered mailing in their offerings. Thank you for providing for the ministries that God has led us to pursue.
Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Please mail to First Baptist Church, 108 South Stokes Street, Havre de Grace, Maryland 21078.
May God bless you in the riches of His grace!!!

04/05/2020

Hello there! Please see below the outline for the sermon posted here Saturday, April 4th, 2020: "God's Repetition, God's Nature."

β€œGod’s Repetition: God’s Nature”
Isaiah 29:1-24

A. God repeats Himself:
1. parenting: sometimes you have to repeat β€œNo!” for
your child to get it
2. throughout Isaiah, God repeats His warnings of
punishment and words of promise and hope
3. β€œWoe!” v. 1 – again, like Isaiah 28:1; getting our
attention for an impending disaster
a. Isaiah 28 = Samaria, northern kingdom
Isaiah 29 = Ariel = β€œlioness of God,”
Jerusalem
- β€œcity where David settled = Jerusalem
- capital of Judah, southern kingdom
b. β€œlet your cycle of festivals go on”
- Practice your religion year after year!
- religious with your mouth; but not with
your heart; v. 13-14
- thinking you are hiding from me, v. 15
- β€œGo ahead with your religion, without
your relationship with Me!”
c. β€œI (God) will besiege (distress) you,” v. 2
- You will mourn, moan!
- You wrestle with God, like Jacob did!
But not righteously!
d. β€œI (God) will encamp against you,” vv. 3-4
- I will lay siege against you with a military
post! Siegeworks!
- You will be made low, put down!
- brought so low = humbled; your voice
will come out of the dust; like a ghost
e. β€œthe multitude” = enemies of God’s people,
v. 5
- so many, they raise a roar
- like dust = pulverized? blown away
- VERY suddenly!
f. Ariel (Judah), v. 6
- God will visit upon you: thunder,
earthquake, noise, storm, tempest,
devouring flaming fire
- really bad! God in all power punishing
g. β€œall the nations,” vv. 7-8: dreaming of
destroying God’s people, unable to satisfy
their cravings
h. Judah will remain blind, hard-hearted, vv. 9-
12
- they choose blindness, hard hearts
- can’t read God’s word = it's sealed
- can’t read God’s word = you can’t read
- your thoughts = messed up; you as clay,
think you can tell God the potter what
to do; v. 16
i. God’s plans to change things, vv. 17-19
- mountainous wild country = hard to
farm, will become abundantly fruitful
- that which was fruitful = not fruitful
- deaf will hear; blind see the light
- will be filled with joy!
- Salvation = radical change in people!
j. the sinful will disappear, vv. 20-21 – those
doing violently wrong, who have contempt
for truth, deceitfully look to do wrong, who
lie in court
k. God will redeem His people, vv. 22-24
- No longer be ashamed!
- Will see Gentiles saved too!
B. God’s nature revealed:
1. God is all knowing! He's not surprised by anything!
2. God is all-powerful! In control!
3. God is all-loving! He cares for us!
4. God has a plan! He is always at work all around us!

So, let’s go to Him! Give ourselves to Him! Rest in Him! Let us wait on (patience, service) Him!

Thank you! And may God bless you through His word and in the riches of His grace!!!

Copied from a letter my wife brought Home. THE U IN JESUS Before U were thought of or time had begun, God stuck you in the name of His Son. And each time you pray, you'll see its true, You can't spell out Jesus and not include U. Your a pretty big part of his wonderful name, For U, he was born; that's why he came. And his great love for U is the reason He died. It even takes U to spell crucified. Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand He rose from the Dead, with U in His plan? The stones split away the gold trUmpets blew, and this word resurrection is spelled with a U. When Jesus left earth at His upward ascension, He felt there was one thing He just had to mention. Go into the world and tell them it's true that I love them all- Just like I love U. So many great people are spelled with a U, Don't they have a right to know Jesus too? It all depends now on what U will do, He'd like them to know, But it all starts with U. When Jesus died on the cross he was thinking of you!

Hello! I was going through some of my Mother's things, and ran across this picture - wasn't sure if you all had it for your archives. She didn't inscribe the date on the back, but based on her appearance in this picture, I'm guessing it was taken in late 1937. (She's the baby in the back left of the picture,) Unfortunately, she also didn't identify any of the parishioners in the picture, except for her immediate family.
