Tom Fitzpatrick for Board of Education - District F

Tom Fitzpatrick for Board of Education - District F Tom has been on the Board since 2012, and won the votes to elevate Havre de Grace High School to the top of the list for replacement, on to the next step!

Many people said they'd believe that we would get a new Middle and High School in Havre de Grace when they saw shovels in the ground! Well, on Thursday, shovels went in the ground.

I'm pround to have served my home town in this historic effort. And I'm even more proud and honored to have had so many people working on this, and hoping and praying for this great day.

They say it takes a village. But, I say, it takes a City, (and a county).

Let's finish the job together.

See you at the ribbon cutting!

As you can see, I haven't posted on this site for some time.

As many of you know, I have filed for re-election to my seat on the Harford County Board of Educations.

We've made a lot of progress in the last four years, taking Havre de Grace High School from pipe dream to reality.

Many know that the engineers are even now staking out the site anticipating start of construction.

Watch this page for regular updates.

We will announce the groundbreaking soon.

Anyway, I want to express my humble and hearty thanks to so many people who have supported this project through the years.

I'm running to see it through to completion.

But more than that, I'm running to advocate for more resources for education across Harford County.

One of the clearest indicators of the culture of any community is in the way it decides to educate its youth.

We are blessed with a dedicated professional staff and great and equally dedicated teachers. We are near the bottom in the state of Maryland in per pupil funding, yet we are fourth from the top in test scores.

Just imagine what we could do with a few more resources.

When the kind of companies that bring the jobs of tommorow to communities look at where they're going to invest, education is a key componant.

Let's not sell ourselves short.

Again, my many thanks to all everyone in the HdG community who have travelled the road to our new school.

Let's finish the job together!

Thanks!
My humble and hearty thanks to each and every one of you who came out and supported me on Election Day.
And my humble and hearty thanks to everyone who helped at the polls, showed up at my fundraiser, and whispered and shouted their encouragement over these last few months.
The job of defending quality education in Harford County is going to be a challenging one for us all in the upcoming couple of years. I’ll need your help and support for that challenge as surely as I needed it for this one.
Running for public office is never for the faint of heart. But I had wonderful experience, met and talked to hundreds of people, and saw that combination of hope and anxiety that defines so much of our national conversation these days.
I also want to congratulate my opponent, Mike Hitchings on a spirited and very professional campaign. Mike was a tough competitor! He kept me on my toes, and I think he intends to keep doing so!
Quality education is an investment in the future. Not just for the folks who have kids in schools, but for each of every one of us. What technology firm would even consider bringing their jobs to a county with a second rate school system. We can’t afford to go there!
That’s why I took this job, and that’s what I intend to work for.
Let’s finish the job together!

Here I am with State Comptroller Peter Franchot outside the Susquehanna Hose Company's #4 station. I'm wearing a broad grin because the Comptroller had just toured Havre de Grace High School and informed us that that we VERY likely to get state funding for our new Havre de Grace Middle and High School. This will be the first time that the Board of Public Works has funded a new school construction project based on the new policy of funding Community Schools. So, it's not just a victory for Havre de Grace, it's a victory for communities across the entire state!

Friday night, I joined a panel of candidates from across the County at a Candidate's Forum at the Darlington Dublin Community Council. We had started off our campaigns there in the Spring, and, while the crowd wasn't large then, over 1000 people watched the video.

Here is our latest session. My thanks to the Darlington Dublin Community Council for hosting this event.

Havre de Grace Middle and High School!

About 100 of our fellow citizens came to the Auditorium to see the schematic drawings for the new Havre de Grace Middle and High School. It was a good crowd, and people asked a lot of excellent questions.

This is the culmination of two year's work on the part of many of us. I've been working on the inside to get the support of the Board, build relationships with staff, and the County council. Dave Glen has done an excellent job lobbying and being our overall cheerleader, Mary Ann Lisanti and Mary Dulaney James have worked for us behind the scenes as well too.

Dave Glen said it last night. Two years ago, we were told this wasn't going to happen. Dave and I were both told that.

But now, thanks to the effort, and prayers of a lot of people, we are closer now than we ever even dreamed of being!

Here's a glimpse of the front of the proposed building, viewed from Lewis Lane (looking from down towards Revolution Street).

Mark your calenders, and plan to be at Havre de Grace High School on Wednesday, August 13th at 6:30 in the Auditorium.

Our architects, Grimm and Parker are going to present the schematic drawings for the new Havre de Grace Middle and High School.

Two years ago, when I joined the Board, this project wasn't even on anyone's list. I was told to forget it. Well, here we are today! It has taken a lot of hard work behind the scenes to bring this project from pipe dream to plans, and we have a lot of people to thank for their help along the way.

So, come out Wednesday night and see what the future holds for Havre de Grace!

Welcome all, and thanks for viewing my first ever campaign page.
When I was appointed to my seat on the Board of Education two years ago, I was interviewed by the Secretary of Education in Annapolis. She asked me what I wanted to do. I told her that my friends and neighbors in Havre de Grace had been staring longingly at the shiny new schools that had sprouted up in other parts of the County and were wondering if “Our Turn” was ever going to come.
I told the Secretary, that in addition to my duties as part of the team that manages the entire system, I would work diligently toward making “Our Turn” a reality.
It has been a two year struggle, with two scope studies, a budget battle, and a lot of questions and reservations along the way.
But, I’m proud to say our work paid off. The Board of Education not only added Havre de Grace High School to the priority list, it made it number two last year. And now that Youth’s Benefit Elementary School is about to get underway, we’re number one!
As the man on the inside, it was my job to get my colleagues on the Board of Education to support our school. Getting their votes was the big first step on the path to our future.
Thanks to the help of my colleagues on the Board of Education, key staff members at HCPS, and many of our friends in the Mayor’s office, the County Executive, our County Council representative, the Legislature, and a certain City Councilman and a group of volunteers, we are on the verge of making our dream come true. We have authority to begin the design process for a new combined Havre de Grace Middle and High School.
In the coming weeks, Harford County Public Schools will host a public meeting to discuss where we’ve been and where we are going. I will keep you posted and hope to see you all there!
I will be posting periodically to give credit where credit is due to all our friends and colleagues who helped along the way.
Of course, I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished, and it will give me great satisfaction to see our new school rise. I’m asking for your votes this year, so we can continue the work we have started.
To all of you from the other parts of District F, I want you to know that I bring two years of experience and a track record to this office. There are many things that the schools in our district need. William Paca/Old Post Elementary needs replacement as badly as Havre de Grace does, and there is a historic perception that schools on the East side of the county are worse off than their richer counterparts elsewhere.
My efforts for Havre de Grace High School represent a first step in my commitment to change that. Join me in helping make that change work for the betterment of all of us in District F and in Harford County!
