Declutter and Donate at Landfill Drop Spot Tax Deductible Receipts Available County Landfill’s

Prince William, VA, September, 2017

By Roger LeBlanc

Cleaning out your home for the holiday season? Donating household goods and other reusable items to the Donation Drop Spot before the end of the year allows you to declutter and receive a possible tax deduction.

Prince William County Solid Waste Division is renewing and expanding its commitment to the reuse of resources. The newly named “Donation Drop Spot” reopened in April with improved facilities and operations, in large part thanks to a new partnership with Savers, an established thrift store company who repurpose the donated materials.

“Savers has a considerable amount of experience in operating attended donation centers and has done a great job so far in operating the two locations,” says Scott MacDonald, the county’s Recycling Program Manager.

The site accepts clothing and household items such as glassware and dishes, and small pieces of furniture or appliances. Attendants are available to assist donors and provide receipts between 9 am and 5 pm daily. Donations bins are also available at the Balls Ford Road Compost facility and the landfill during normal operating hours.

The partnership with Savers also generates funds for a charitable cause. Proceeds from the Donation Spot benefit the National Children’s Center, a nonprofit that provides services for the developmentally disabled youth in the Washington metropolitan area.

An Equal Opportunity Employer Printed on Recycled Paper
Having a donation center at the landfill is not mandated in anyway by the state, but the County sees it as a great way to extend the life of the landfill and improve efficiency. Prince Williams County’s original donation center was created in 1991, when members of the Solid Waste Advisory Group formed what was then called the “Too Good to Waste Place”.

The donation program was suspended in September 2016 in order for the county to make building repairs and find the right organization to operate the program.

“Several improvements to the building were made, including roll-up doors, new lighting, and some interior improvements that enhance work conditions and material storage,” says MacDonald. Later this year, a climate controlled weather booth will be installed for workers to escape the heat in the summer and the cold during the winter.

A full list of accepted items for the Donation Drop Spot can be found at www.savers.com/donate/what-we-take. Don’t forget your receipt.

Additional information about Solid Waste Division programs and facilities is available at www.pwcgov.org/trashandrecycling.
