Knox had the opportunity for a day at the beach with one of our wonderful volunteers, Cathy! He had a delightful, joyful time. Thank you, Cathy! Seeing a dog that is weary of shelter life outside in a fun setting gives us a view of the loving pet they will be for an adopter. Knox is an affectionate and very bright 4 year old fellow. He is 58 pounds of love to give away. Knox knows how to sit and give his paw and is quite the kisser. Some dogs that come into the shelter do quite well with the routine, being fed well and play time in the courtyards until they are adopted. Other dogs grow weary of kennel life despite our best efforts. Knox is one of those that is not happy with shelter life, including his canine neighbors. What Knox wants more than anything is a best human buddy to walk with him, and sit with him and love him. He is going to flourish out of the shelter setting. He learns quickly and is endlessly loyal. We will be thrilled for Knox to find a home! He has had his immunizations and through the generosity of A.W.L been neutered. Now he is waiting expectantly for his very own person to come through the door. We do not currently have set,.open to the public adoption hours but are happy to introduce our shelter pets by appointment. If you would like to meet Knox , or any of our other dogs and cats, please call the shelter at 804 580 6156 to make an appointment for a meet and greet, leaving a message if there is no answer. Our website www.friendsncas.org has more of our pets for adoption as well as our adoption application and background clearance form. We enjoy introducing our pets and helping you find a new loving companion.

It's National Puppy Day and and a perfect time for Reesie to introduce himself! If you are looking for a lovable best buddy, Reesie may be your boy. He is about 8 months old with a delightful temperament. Reesie is friendly with people and has a very good attitude about other dogs. For a pup this age he is quite calm. He enjoys exercise and attention then has the ability to settle in for a rest. He has had his immunizations and through the generosity of A.W.L will be neutered. Reesie's previous owner reported that he did very well with house training and he tries to keep a clean kennel..He will probably be a quick study on house training. He enjoys toys and particularly likes having his favorite chew bone in his kennel. Although Reesie is relatively low key for a pup, he will need lots of play time, exercise and attention so he grows up to be a wonderful canine citizen. He is a 35 pound love bug! Although we do not currently have set, open to the public adoption hours, we are happy to introduce our dogs by appointment. Please note: if you have serious interest in one of our dogs or cats, you should submit an application and background clearance form ahead of time. These will be honored in the order they are received. The forms can be found on our website, www.friendsncas.org Please read the instructions carefully and sign your forms as well as submit a copy of your license. To make an appointment to meet one of our ever so fabulous dogs or cats please call the shelter at 804 580 6156 to make an appointment, leaving a message if there is no answer. We look forward to helping you find a loving companion!

Spring has sprung and Isla is letting her ears fly in celebration! This fun gal is even tempered and free spirited. Isla appears to never have a bad day or know a stranger. Her adventuresome spirit means she may dig under a fence to explore so Isla's wanderlust will need supervision. She is a happy go lucky girl who will toss a ball in the air for the sheer joy of it. Isla is a beautiful 45 pounds and about 2 years old. She has had her immunizations and through the generosity of A.W.L will be spayed. Isla appears to be very dog friendly and expects good things from everyone she meets. We do not currently have set, open to the public adoption hours but are happy to introduce our dogs or cats by appointment. If you would like to meet Isla, or any of our other dogs or cats, please call the shelter at 804 580 6156 to make an appointment, leaving a message if no answer. We recommend submitting the adoption application and background clearance form ahead of your visit and they can be found on our website www.friendsncas.org You will find pictures of some of our cats and dogs for adoption on our website as well. HAPPY UPDATE: Vincent was adopted today!! Silly, outgoing, affectionate, resilient. That is our Vincent. Affectionately known as " Vinnie" by some of his best human buddies. Vincent is about 5 years old and 48 pounds of liveliness. Thank you to Ann DeMuth, Rescue Dog Photography, for this photo of N.C A.S' fun boy. This joyful fellow is a free spirit who will benefit from some time and patience working on social graces! He may not be a good fit to live with another strong minded male dog, but has indicated he would get along with lower key dogs, especially females. Vinnie has just one ear. He has not shared how this happened but it has not dampened his excitement about each day. Vincent is a good natured boy who will bring enthusiasm to his forever home. We do not currently have set, open to the public adoption hours but are happy to introduce our pets by appointment. Please call the shelter at 804 580 6156 and leave a message if there is no answer, to set an appointment. More info about our shelter dogs and cats and our adoption application and background clearance forms can be found on our website, www.friendsncas.org We look forward to helping you find a loving companion!

Results are in!!

There is no doubt in my mind that this boy would FAIL in a regular pet home. He is just TOO MUCH DOG.

Therefore we will be placing him in a working role or a household that has prior malinois experience.

Stop taking your dog’s ball!

There are rules to life, for humans and dogs, in a relationship. It has to be fair.

Playing fetch with your dog is SO FUN for all involved. And not to mention it’s the easiest way to get a good exercise session in without much work on the handler’s end.

The game is simple:

Bring me the ball, I TAKE the ball and then I will throw the ball for you. Wash rinse and repeat.

Easy right?

Well not for the dog. They are doing all the work, they are having fun chasing the ball but then it is immediately halted by having to give up that ball to you. But you’re just gunna throw it again... so what’s the big deal?!

The big deal is that if you ALWAYS TAKE THE BALL your dog learns that they lose every time they come back to you and they never get a chance to just ENJOY their efforts.

Ever notice how a dog squishes the heck out of a ball after they chase that sucker down?

That’s because they are ecstatic and over joyed, mixed in with a little possession.

This is how I challenge my clients to engage with their dogs (especially if they are teaching how to release a toy on command)

👊🏻👊🏻 Get two toys that are 100% identical that way their value is the exact same to the dog 👊🏻👊🏻

Throw one ball for the dog, encourage them
to come back to you, now use the second ball you have in your possession to entice your dog. Make them think the ball you have is WAY more exciting than the ball they have.

🙃EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME 🙃

Now when your dog drops the ball in their mouth immediately mark with clicker or YES and throw the ball you have.

You should be left with the ball they dropped for the ball you threw.

Now when they come back to you, do a mix of two things.... ball exchangeas stated above and also pet on them and praise them like I do in this video with Kojac.

Enjoy your dog’s reward WITH him/her.

In this video I’m showing Kojac that he can have his ball and I can pet him, without him feeling like he has to be possessive and protect his ball from me.

Kojac is not possessive, but he might be. He was never taught these games.... so he just doesn’t know the rules to playing fetch. One rule also being I am not here to steal your toy. But there are times when I will ask for the toy- sometimes you’ll get it back and sometimes you won’t because the game does eventually end.

GERF Friends!
We are working with the Northumberland Sheriff's Office to temporarily provide a safe haven at GERF for these three beauties 🐴 and to restore their health. These sweet babies arrived neglected and in poor condition with no running water on property. The strong bond between these gentle horses is very noticeable and our goal, if possible, is to keep them together. We would love to have them stay at GERF as their “forever home” if we can get FULL time sponsorship.
If you are interested, please message us for more details. If you know someone that is willing to provide a forever home for them, let us know too. We are also accepting donations to assist us in providing shelter and restoring their health.

You have all probably heard the saying “These dogs are like owning a corvette”

And you might have rolled your eyes. 👀👀

Because a dog is not a car. So stupid to even compare.

While I understand that a dog is not like a vehicle there is a connection between the two, driving an old beat up Honda hatchback (that was most people’s first car) is VERY different than driving a sports car that accelerates with the tap of the gas pedal.

Now let’s compare breeds like the above stated car example.

Handling a Labrador Retriever or similar breed that is happy go lucky and a wiggle butt fanatic is very different than handling a working breed that has been crafted to be high energy, high to arousal at the drop of a pin.

Driving a fast car is like handling a fast dog. It’s exciting and scary all at the same time.

You accelerate to much and next thing you know you crashed into a tree.

You handle your working dog wrong and without knowledge and next thing you know, your dog is biting the neighbor kid.

Now let’s turn the tables. You do everything correctly.

You drive the fast car with skill and finesse and you are a great driver , who maybe has the skill set to race on your free time at the near by race track.

You handle the high drive dog correctly, you did your research and know how to handle problems that will arise. You train obedience, you expose your puppy to all the right things, you train on all the exercises your trainer gives you and you get in a ton of reps each day. Your dog is a badass and has the ability to compete in akc sports and title or other bite sports and title and contribute to the breed as a whole.

This dog below is Kojac. I don’t know his breeder, I don’t know his come up and I don’t know how he was treated. I do know that he has potential. I could see that as soon as I pulled him out of his kennel this morning.

I am very excited for this dog’s future and hope he can fill a working role.

This post comes late,, but better late than never Another 'Gotcha Day' has come and gone for The Lady Gemma! We use this as a birthday of sorts. We estimate her to be 4 and a half, to 5 years old, based on the little info known about her, being she was a stray. I dont regret, for a day, picking her up and adding her to my family!

Lancaster County, VA UPDATE 11/12/20 We think a kind-hearted person may have stopped along River Rd somewhere between White Chapel Rd and Western Branch Rd on a rainy night around two weeks ago and picked up Sunday from the side of the road. We are so grateful for whoever got her out of the rain and kept her safe, but we miss her and want her home. If you have any information that may lead to Sunday's return, please let me know. We are offering a reward to anyone who can help bring her home.

Is there a way to see all the cats you have available for adoption? Or do I need to come by to see them? We have a missing cat
Hi! Just wanted to post my Ike who I adopted from you many years ago. He was so so shy when I met him and just thought I’d share that he’s still going strong, although much more gray! He is such a great, calm dog and the perfect member of our family! Here he is with his lil sister Eve, who snuggles with him all the time.
Anyone in the Edwardsville/Burgess area missing a dog? He is very friendly.
