Mayor Lisa Merkel

Mayor Lisa Merkel Together we can put Herndon on the map as a model of 21st century hometown living, a next generation small town. Preserving our History. Shaping our Future.

I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama and come from a close-knit, working-class family whose strong values and open-minded view of the world shaped who I am today. With the help of Pell Grants, I worked my way through school and, in 1995—when I earned a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Auburn University—I became the first member of my family to graduate from college. I moved to the DC area with my husband, Dave, an Air Force officer, in the fall of 1996. We fell in love with the area and after Dave’s tour of duty was up we decided to make Northern Virginia our home. I was working for Fairfax County Public Schools and Dave soon went to work in the private sector. In 2002, we fell in love with a Victorian farmhouse in downtown Herndon and moved in that spring. From the beginning we enjoyed life in the Town of Herndon: the homecoming parade every fall, fireworks from the backyard on the 4th of July, and walking downtown to enjoy Friday Night Live, Jazz at the Ice House, wings at Jimmy's and slices of fresh bread at Great Harvest. In 2001, I was selected by then Governor Mark Warner to serve on Virginia's Partnerships for Achieving Successful Schools initiative and worked on a year-long partnership with a Richmond elementary school, traveling monthly to coach teachers and provide on-site language arts professional development opportunities for the teachers and staff at the school. In 2002, I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Masters degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in literacy, and I moved from the classroom to become a Title I Reading Specialist. I am still so very proud that my classroom work was featured in the book, Shared Reading for Today's Classroom, and materials and teaching strategies I developed are still being used in literacy professional development courses throughout Fairfax County. When our children were born, I took a leave of absence from teaching to become a stay at home mom. I joined the Herndon Homes Tour Committee, and I became more involved in Town issues. First elected to Herndon Town Council as Vice Mayor in 2010. Elected Mayor in 2012, and re-elected in 2014 and 2016.

Like so many of you, I am devastated by what has happened to George Floyd and others in our country. Racism has reached its boiling point and we are witnessing the resulting turmoil across America. I am grateful for our Chief and our Herndon Police officers, and the relationships they’ve built in our community over the years - a result of decades of work. Did you know that our hometown was the scene of a riot in 1974 because of an officer involved shooting of an African American resident by a Fairfax County officer? It’s hard to imagine, but it’s true. Following that incident, the town began to implement community policing, opened the Herndon Community Center and began many other sustained efforts to build relationships and establish trust between our police department and the people they are here to protect. I’m grateful that our town has been committed to these efforts, and pray that other cities and towns are able to begin to heal and create a similar environment in their communities. It takes leadership, commitment, compassion, care, trust....and time.

Well #Herndon, welcome to Phase 1 of re-opening! Downtown was abuzz this morning with people prepping outdoor spaces at our favorite places and you could really feel the joy of being out and seeing other people! Please be sure to follow the posted guidelines at each establishment, and above all else - wash your hands, social distance, and wear your mask. All the cool kids are doing it! :) Welcome back, Herndon!

So far Jimmy's Old Town Tavern, The Breeze Restaurant and Sports Bar Mile 20 have additional temporary outdoor seating up and running, and I'm told that Green Lizard Cycling, LLC, Sully's Pour House, Red Kimono Japanese & Korean cuisine and A Taste Of The World and A2B - Adyar Ananda Bhavan Virginia (and maybe others, these are just the ones I've heard have done the application with ABC and the Town!) are getting their approvals as we speak - hoping to be set up for the weekend! YAY!!!!!!!

While you're #MaskingUp, don't forget the other essentials - WASH your hands and Social Distance, 6ft apart!

I stand with our Jewish friends and neighbors at Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, and throughout our community. I signed this letter without hesitation. Hate truly has no home here.

Often we call these “symbols of hate,” and they, along with zoombombers shouting the n-word or posting images of pornography, demonstrate the dark path that seduces too many of our fellow citizens during this pandemic. Whether one promotes the hatred of Jews, people of color, or women, I believe...

We are all mourning the loss of Daryl Smith, and there have been invitations from posted on social media and spread widely encouraging folks to gather along the procession route to honor him. Please see the Chief’s plea below. We cannot have crowds of people gathering during this time of COVID. I’m disappointed too. But please stay home on Friday. Thank you.

A Statement from Chief Maggie DeBoard
"We have received much interest from the public to come out and honor former HPD Captain and Purcellville Chief Darryl Smith, as he is laid to rest on Friday. Due to the restrictions brought upon our community by COVID-19, the funeral service is restricted to family members only. We will also be avoiding driving through the downtown area as we escort Darryl to his final resting place to avoid the congested areas where people may want to congregate to pay their respects, all in the interest of safety.

The Herndon Police Department, along with representatives from the Purcellville Police Department, have made plans to formally honor Darryl at his graveside service, while doing our best to keep the family and our officers safe. Please respect the Governor's Orders and our efforts to limit exposure at this service both to Darryl's family and to our officers by remaining away from the cemetery. It is truly heartbreaking to lay a beloved lifelong public servant to rest without full honors and the support from the community he served, but safety must prevail and we all know that Smitty would stress this if he were still here with us today.

Please know that Darryl's police families will provide a proper sendoff to him that lets his immediate family know how much he was loved and respected.

We appreciate the community's cooperation during this painful and difficult time."

Please join us for a virtual viewing of both the funeral service and the graveside service. The links can be found on Adams-Green Funeral Home & Crematory's website here:

Last night the Council and I had our first ever virtual work session - only possible because of the current pandemic emergency and only to discuss items related to continuity of government and the emergency itself. All in all, it went very well, right here from our dining room table! Only minor technical issues, but that was to be expected. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank you to IT for all the work you’ve done to make this so seamless.

Next week we will hold our public hearing in the same manner, and the public is invited to watch and participate. Details on how to do that will be forthcoming on the Town’s website and Official page, Town of Herndon Government and I’ll do my best to post it here as well. If you’d like to listen in to last night’s discussion, the link can be found in the link below. Stay healthy and safe, everyone! #Herndon

Effective today, in accordance with the latest CDC recommendations, you may see HPD officers wearing either surgical masks or non-medical face coverings while in public. This is for our safety, and for yours. Coupled with safe social distancing, we will continue to protect and serve our community through this crisis. Stay safe. Stay home.

The stay-at-home order issued by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam today is critical to help slow the spread of the coronavirus as cases continue to climb across the state with 225 confirmed cases in the Fairfax County Health District. Social distancing is the most effective method to limit the disease’s transmission.

The governor’s action, which currently remains in effect until June 10, means that residents should stay in homes with only a few exceptions for essential activities, including:

• Getting groceries or medicines.
• Caring for a sick family member or friend.
• Getting medical care for yourself .
• Going outside for exercise for yourself or pets (although not in groups larger than 10 people).
• Getting essential social or government services.
• Traveling to and from work or place of worship.

Do not go out unless you need to go out.

“To date, this has been a suggestion to Virginians,” said Northam. “Today it’s an order.”

Last night I chaired a meeting I never imagined, where we declared a State of Emergency and Disaster in the Town of Herndon. Thank you to my colleagues for coming together to make unprecedented decisions in order to keep our staff and constituents safe, while allowing our town operations to continue as best we can. Ordinance 20-O-23 Implements Emergency Procedures and Effectuates Temporary Changes to Address Continuity of Governmental Operations During the Pandemic COVID-19 Disaster.

One of the temporary changes this allows is our ability to conduct electronic meetings by our Town Council and Board & Commissions. Our next Council Work Session and Public Hearing (April 7th and 14th respectively) will be held electronically and will provide for the public to participate electronically. Over the next weeks, information will be provided to the public as to how you may participate. Please check our website often, as every COVID19 related change - including how to participate remotely - will posted there. Updates are happening daily, as this is a rapidly changing situation.
http://www.herndon-va.gov

Thank you to all of you for your patience, perseverance and care as we work through these extraordinary times.

Link is attached to last night’s agenda, where you may read each ordinance and staff report. All disaster related items were approved unanimously by the Mayor and Council.

I just want to give a shout out to all the people out there who are working to keep our town going.....essential services both by our Town workers making sure refuse is picked up and town business goes on. To those in the grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants who've completely changed their business models and especially our health care workers. This is uncharted territory and we are all doing the best that we can. Be kind. Check in on your friends and family. It's a long road ahead and we need each other. Maybe more than ever. ~Mayor Lisa

Here’s some good downtown news in the midst of the COVID19 situation.

Please be advised that, beginning next week, contractors will be on-site at the former Subaru dealership, 770 Elden Street. They will be removing asbestos, environmental remediation that is a portion of the Virginia Brownfield Remediation grant awarded by the Commonwealth to the Town of Herndon in 2017; and then demolishing the building on the site, in preparation for redevelopment by Comstock Herndon Venture LC.
