Like so many of you, I am devastated by what has happened to George Floyd and others in our country. Racism has reached its boiling point and we are witnessing the resulting turmoil across America. I am grateful for our Chief and our Herndon Police officers, and the relationships they’ve built in our community over the years - a result of decades of work. Did you know that our hometown was the scene of a riot in 1974 because of an officer involved shooting of an African American resident by a Fairfax County officer? It’s hard to imagine, but it’s true. Following that incident, the town began to implement community policing, opened the Herndon Community Center and began many other sustained efforts to build relationships and establish trust between our police department and the people they are here to protect. I’m grateful that our town has been committed to these efforts, and pray that other cities and towns are able to begin to heal and create a similar environment in their communities. It takes leadership, commitment, compassion, care, trust....and time.
