When an emergency happens, our first instinct is often to rush in and help. But acting without assessing the situation could put you in danger, too.
The first step in first aid is to check the scene for safety. If the scene is unsafe, do not approach. Call 911 and wait for trained emergency responders.
Don't become the second victim. Stay safe so you can help when it's safe to do so.
