On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Commissioner Director Shanel Y. Robinson and Commissioner Elizabeth Graner attended the 2026 graduation for the Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy. The graduation ceremony highlighted the true courage it takes to be a first responder and emphasized the importance of commitment, service, and community. Instructors also encouraged the Fire and EMS graduates to continue training, never lose their curiosity, and to remain lifelong learners.

Congratulations to all the graduates and thank you for your service.

Somerset County is currently forecasted to receive two days of Severe Weather. Tuesday, September 1 and Wednesday, September 2.

Tuesday, September 1:
Somerset County is at a level 2 out of 5 for Severe Weather. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are possible. The Flash Flooding threat for Tuesday remains low at a level 1 out of 4. Rainfall rates of 1-2 inches are possible.

Wednesday, September 2:
Somerset County is at a level 2 out of 5 for Severe Weather. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes are possible. The Flash flooding threat for Wednesday is at a level 2 out of 4. Repeating rounds of heavy rainfall at 1-2 inches per hour are possible. Rainfall totals on Wednesday could reach 3 inches.

The Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service takes effect at Noon today. 1 - 2 inches of rain can be expected with locally higher amounts of 3 - 5 inches of rain possible.

Additionally, confidence has increased in the possibility of severe storms. Damaging wind gusts will be the greatest threat, but isolated large hail or a tornado cannot be ruled out.

The timing of this event is from 2PM-10PM but hazards can occur before and after this time frame.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Somerset County. This flood watch takes effect on August 27 at 12PM and will expire on August 28 at 4AM.

Flash Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid-day Thursday. Some of these showers and thunderstorms are expected to produce very heavy rainfall. 1-2 inches of rain can be expected with localized amounts of 3-5 inches possible in the strongest storms.

The Flood watch issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 2AM on August 21. Rainfall rates of 1 -3 inches are possible. Rainfall totals of 3 - 5 inches are also possible.

The threat of the Severe weather has also increased for Somerset County specifically, southern Somerset County. The threat for severe weather is at a level 2 out of 5. Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and a few tornadoes are possible.

The risk of tornadoes is at 2-4% per the National Weather Service. If you receive a tornado warning alert, find a safe shelter right away. Go to a safe room, basement or storm cellar. Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. If you are on the road, do NOT shelter under overpasses or bridges. Low, flat locations are safer.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Somerset County. This takes effect on August 20 at 12PM and expires on August 21 at 2AM.

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the area beginning Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. Rainfall rates of 1 - 3 inches per hour are possible. Rainfall amounts of 1 - 2 inches are possible with localized amounts of 3 - 5 inches which can cause flash flooding.

CERT is an all-hazard, all-risk training program designed to teach you how to protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and community during a disaster situation. CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people in the communities they serve.

This course is free to all residents of Somerset County and starts on September 23rd, 2026. Attendance at all class sessions is required.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Somerset County. This watch has already taken effect and will expire tonight at 9PM.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of Severe Thunderstorms. A Severe Thunderstorm is defined as a storm producing hail one inch or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceeding 58 miles an hour.

The National Weather Service has increased the chances of Somerset County seeing Severe Weather today. Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with locally damaging winds are possible. Locally heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding is also possible.

The timing for this weather event is 4 PM to 11 PM.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Somerset County effective through August 8, at 8PM.

Heat index values as high as 103 degrees are expected throughout this heat wave. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses especially in vulnerable populations. Drink plenty of water, and stay in a cool, air-conditioned room if possible.

Additionally, there is a Marginal risk of Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding.
