Back in May, I was there at Smith School when Rep Josh Gottheimer announced the Feed Our Kids Act.

With September being Hunger Action Month, it seemed worth sharing this again. Kids shouldn’t be sitting in a classroom hungry. Making sure they have something to eat and are in a position to learn just seems like common sense to me. Glad Hillsdale got to be part of the conversation.

Nearly 330,000 children in Jersey are food insecure. Let’s be clear: no child should go hungry in Jersey or anywhere in America.

That’s why I’m fighting hard with my “Feed Our Kids Act” to make school meals free for every K-12 public school student and secure our food assistance programs. Hunger shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

Council Meeting: Tuesday, September 1

It got a little quiet here in August, I was up at the lake with family for a stretch. Back now, and back to keeping you posted on what's interesting to me at Borough Hall.

Here's what's on tomorrow's agenda (council goes into closed session at 6:00 PM; the public meeting starts at 7:00 PM at Borough Hall):

• A step forward on the new DPW building — authorizing the Borough to advertise for construction bids.
• A townwide tree-service contract — removal, trimming, and stump grinding.
• Certification of the 2025 annual audit and its corrective action plan.
• Planning Board appointment (Alternate)
• Final vote on Ordinance 26-23 — a $200,000 capital ordinance for recreation improvements, paid from the Borough's Capital Improvement Fund. It was introduced last month; the public hearing is tomorrow.
• Monthly department reports from the Borough Engineer, Police, DPW, and Fire.

On the agenda for tomorrow's council meeting: oath of office for two Fire Department cadets and a new full member, recognition of a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient, a vote on the private property traffic enforcement ordinance, introduction of a $200,000 ordinance for recreation improvements, and monthly reports from Police, DPW, Fire, and the Borough Engineer.

Meetings are open to the public, livestreamed on YouTube (), and televised on Optimum 77 / FIOS 32.

Cell service update

Continuing with updates from this month's council meeting. Our Borough Administrator reported that AT&T is looking at Hillsdale as one of 11 spots for new monopoles across NJ. It's the same kind of tower already standing behind our firehouse (photo above).

Timing feels relevant given the storms this summer. Power went out on the east side of town, which also happens to be where cell coverage is already weakest and that's a real safety concern. For what it's worth, I voted yes on the previous proposal, which involved Verizon, and was in the minority on that one. I'm still interested in pursuing solutions.

Based on past history, AT&T will probably run into some of the same issues that held up the last proposal. Nothing decided yet — I'll post again once we know more.

Torrential rain on July 21 brought a large tree branch down over one of our streets. By the time the homeowner made it back, our DPW crew was already there, cutting it down to size and clearing the road.

Hillsdale Environmental Commission Chairman Fred Rubel saw it happen and took the time to write a letter to the editor about it, published in Pascack Press. One line stuck with me:

"Our taxes pay for this - and I'm inclined to view it as a much-appreciated return on investment."

That's exactly it. A lot of what our Public Works team does happens quietly, in the background, or right in front of your house before you even notice. It adds up.

At last week's council meeting I had the chance to speak about something I'm really proud of. When I joined the council, I brought an idea to our Borough Administrator, a free app that keeps every Hillsdale resident connected to their community. That app is now live.

If you know me personally, you know I love data. That's why I'm excited to give kudos to the Economic Development Committee and its Chair, Councilwoman Melissa Mazza Chiong, for releasing a community survey that will help gather valuable information to guide Hillsdale's future.

This is exactly the kind of resident engagement I want to see our town continue to champion. Just this past month, we've hosted town halls, launched the Hillsdale Connect mobile app (which I've been excited to help bring to the residents), and shared important taxpayer-impacting news through press releases and social media.

We're modernizing how we communicate, listen, and engage with residents, and I think that's a great thing. It's also been one of my top priorities since joining the Borough Council, because a more informed and engaged community leads to better decisions for Hillsdale.

A few weeks ago I shared that Hillsdale had applied for a state grant for a new street sweeper. Today I'm excited to say we got it! Mayor Michael Sheinfield announced that Hillsdale has been awarded a $381,000 NJDEP grant for a new all-electric street sweeper and charging station, with no local taxpayer match required.

This one deserves a special shoutout to DPW Superintendent Barry Peterson.

When I first started on council, Barry and I talked about ways we could bring new revenue into Hillsdale through shared services with neighboring towns. During those conversations he introduced me to the NJDEP "Stop the Soot" grant and had already begun researching the opportunity. It quickly became clear this was something worth pursuing.

Barry and team did the hard part. He identified the grant, put in the work to navigate the application process, and delivered a tremendous result for our community.

This grant replaces aging equipment at no cost to taxpayers, improves our DPW fleet, and gives us another opportunity to expand shared services with neighboring municipalities, creating revenue that can be reinvested back into Hillsdale.

These kinds of wins don't happen by accident. They happen because dedicated public servants are constantly looking for better ways to serve residents while being responsible with taxpayer dollars.

Congratulations, Barry, and thank you to Mayor Sheinfield - Hillsdale, NJ for highlighting this accomplishment. Looking forward to seeing the new sweeper on our streets!
