“Home, Home on the Trace!”

For thousands of years, people have made their homes along the Natchez Trace. Most of those dwellings are long gone, but a few remarkable places still stand to remind us of the lives lived here.

One of them is the Gordon House near milepost 407. Built by John and Dolly Gordon in 1818, it served as an inn for traveling kaintucks before seeing footpaths become a paved roadway. Imagine the stories its walls could tell.

Take a drive down the historic Natchez Trace Parkway and visit Tennessee’s newest state park, Devil's Backbone State Park!

Currently open for day use, the park is located in Hohenwald, TN, one hour south of Dickson. It’s the only Tennessee State Park accessed exclusively by a National Parkway, forming a unique partnership between the National Park Service and Tennessee State Parks.

Visitors can experience a rugged 3.5-mile hiking trail within a protected State Natural Area. The trail winds through a mature forest that has remained largely undisturbed for more than 60 years. Along the way, you’ll pass scenic views, shallow creeks, and resident wildlife like white-tailed deer and woodland birds.

The park offers a serene experience with limited amenities. Plan to stop at the rest areas along the Trace before your visit and come prepared for a rewarding hike.
