I enjoyed visiting VanderBilt Charter Academy this morning where they had an assembly honoring the character of students nominated by their teacher in the younger grades and by their peers in the older grades. The parents who attended were so proud!

After that, Jasper was introduced to the student body. He is the new therapy dog who will be making VanderBilt his home for the next decade. He is a Priority Pup, trained to help students with anxiety and other difficult emotions.

The students were so excited to meet him and eager to hear how they could help Jasper feel at home. Everyone celebrated with Scooby-Doo graham crackers, and the 2nd grade class I visited heard a story about Frida’s Fireworks, another way to describe hard-to-control emotions.

Each student was gifted a stuffie Jasper with a book. They were jumping with joy, cuddling their newest little friend.


Priority Pups is a program that places highly trainedfacility dogs in schools and clinical settings to support children’s mentalhealth, reduce anxiety, and promote emotional well-being. The dogs are trained and certified therapy dogs by Paws for Change and are placed in schools and mental health facilities. Priority Health covers a lot of the costs associatedwith their raising and training before placement.

4th grade school children from across the state come to the Capitol for a tour. For many adults this is their only memory of the Capitol.
If it’s a Holland area school I do my best to find time to meet them and give and their parents or caregivers the opportunity to be on the floor of the House of Representatives!
