This photo from our Council retreat offers a helpful way to understand the roles of Town Council and Town staff.

Think of Holly Springs as an airplane:

Council helps determine the destination. We establish the Town’s vision, priorities, policies, and budget. We also provide oversight and make decisions together through public votes.

Our Town Manager and professional staff help determine how we safely reach that destination. They manage projects, oversee departments, provide professional expertise, and handle the Town’s day-to-day operations.

There is overlap and collaboration along the way, but an individual Council member cannot direct employees or make Town decisions alone. Our role is to listen to residents, ask questions, set priorities, and work with the rest of Council to provide clear direction.

Staff’s role is to turn that direction into responsible, practical action.

Both roles are necessary to keep Holly Springs moving forward. ✈️

The CEO of Zoom, the company that made virtual meetings possible for millions, believes that being together matters.

In 2023, Zoom began requiring employees come in at least two days a week. Eric Yuan said it had become difficult for employees to get to know one another, debate ideas honestly, and build trust through a screen alone. He said, “Trust is a foundation for everything."

That idea is why I serve in local government, even though taking time away from my office means losing income. I believe we have more values in common than we realize, but we have to actually talk to one another to discover them.

Three weeks from today, I want people from BOTH sides to read this book, bring your ideas, and tell me how you would like to see Holly Springs move forward.

This is how we make a difference in local government. This is how change starts. Not through another Facebook comment, but by showing up and working together.

The reason I ran for Town Council is because after 18 years of sitting face to face with people in this community, I believe we have far more in common than social media and national politics would have us believe.

And if we want something different, we have to do something different.

Social media isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. But showing up for each other might. Talking face to face might. Standing up for our neighbors might.

I don’t care what political side you’re on. Come talk to me. Bring your ideas, concerns, disagreements, and hopes for Holly Springs.

That’s the reason I’m here. I want Holly Springs to show that we can be different, that we don’t have to let social media divide us, and that neighbors can disagree and still show up for one another.

If you’re ready for something different too, come talk to me. I would love to have you help shape the future of our town, but it has start with neighbors talking, not social media.💜

In the spirit of transparency, I wanted to share a few of the things I’ll be thinking about going into Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting.

The biggest item for me is the 2420 Avent Ferry rezoning. I see some positives in the proposal, including lower-density housing, neighborhood commercial space, a sidepath, road connections, and preserved open space. I would personally like to see more space set aside for small businesses, but my biggest priority is pedestrian safety. If we’re creating neighborhood commercial that people are supposed to be able to walk to, I want to understand exactly what kind of safe crossing across Avent Ferry is actually guaranteed, especially since NCDOT has a role in that decision.

I’ll also be looking closely at the Town’s proposed Oracle financial and utility software system, particularly the five-year cost, implementation risk, and how we make sure taxpayers actually see the efficiencies we’re paying for.

There are also a few infrastructure expenses on the consent agenda where I want to better understand the long-term value, including the North Main Athletic Complex parking lot rehabilitation and the Fire Station 2 kitchen renovation.

I haven’t made up my mind simply because something is on the agenda. My goal is to ask questions, listen to residents and staff, and understand the benefits and tradeoffs before I vote.

Coming home from Guatemala, I’ve been thinking about how much of where we start in life is simply chance. We don’t choose where we’re born or the opportunities we’re born into. I’m incredibly grateful for the gift of being born in a country where so many doors have been open to me.

It’s also a reminder that what we have isn’t always just a product of our hard work or the choices we’ve made. Sometimes it’s also about the opportunities we were fortunate enough to be given. And I think that comes with a responsibility to help create those opportunities for others.

For me, so much of that starts right here in our own community. It’s neighbors working together, listening to each other, helping each other, and finding common ground even when we don’t agree on everything. Local government may not always get the most attention, but it’s where we can make a very real difference in people’s everyday lives.

As November approaches, I hope we remember how fortunate we are to have a voice in what happens in our community, and how important it is to use it.

None of us gets to choose where we start. But we do get to choose what we do with what we’ve been given, and how we use it to help others.

PHOTO: This sweet 75-year-old man had recently lost his wife and was living alone. He traveled nearly 50 miles on three different buses to come see us for an eye exam and slept outside the hospital the night before so he wouldn’t miss his chance to be seen. His children live in New Jersey, but he isn’t able to join them. I think about him and how different our lives can be simply because of where we were born. 💜
