The Homewood Police K-9 Unit competed last week at the USPCA National Field Trials in Foley, Alabama and brought home some hardware.

80 out of 3,000 USPCA K-9 teams from around the country competed throughout the week. The Homewood Police K-9 unit participated as individual teams , and as a regional team that included two K-9 teams from the Williams County TN Sheriffs Office.

K-9 Officer Altobella and K-9 Shadow competed in their first national trial and had an amazing week. They placed 8th overall in Criminal Apprehension, 27th overall combined score, and 2nd overall as a regional team. They are the second K-9 team from Homewood to earn a national certification. K-9 Officer Suggs and K-9 Vulcan became the first K-9 team from Homewood to earn a national certification at last year's trials.

K-9 Officer Brown and K-9 Titan placed 4th overall in Obedience, 12th overall on Criminal Apprehension, 9th overall for combined score, and 2nd overall as a region team. They also earned a national certification making them the third K-9 team from Homewood to earn a national certification.

This is the first time in the history of the Homewood Police K-9 unit that all three K-9 teams are nationally certified by the USPCA.

These officers and their K-9 partners continue to display hard work and dedication to serve our community. Keep up the good work!

CLARIFICATION ON ANIMAL CONTROL CALLS

The Homewood Police Department is still operating without the services of an Animal Control Officer. We would like to clarify our current procedures on our response to animal control calls. If we receive a call about an animal issue, a patrol officer will respond to the location and take action. If the officer determines that expertise assistance is needed, the Humane Society will be contacted. We have an agreement with the Humane Society where they will respond and provide assistance. They will, in turn, bill the department for the services that were rendered.

We are still attempting to recruit and hire an Animal Control Officer.

Golf Carts and Low Speed Vehicles

The Homewood Police Department would like to remind the public that it is illegal under Alabama law to operate a golf cart on public roadways and sidewalks.

Low speed vehicles can be driven on roadways in Alabama as long as the driver meets certain requirements.

These requirements include:

Headlights
Brake lights
Turn signals
Seat belts
Rear and side view mirrors
Advanced braking system
It is these safety features that make low-speed vehicles DOT and DMV approved.

The driver of a low speed vehicle must be a licensed driver who is at least 16-years-old. If an underage child or an unlicensed driver is caught driving a low speed vehicle on the road, the owner could be fined.

Not only does the driver need to have a valid driver’s license, but they also need to have the low speed vehicle registered with the DMV. To legally register a low speed vehicle, the driver will need to purchase liability insurance. When an operator is driving a low speed vehicle, they must always have their driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance with them. If a driver is caught on a public roadway without the necessary documentation, they could be fined.

Low speed vehicles can only be driven on public roads with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour or less. Low speed vehicles are only allowed to be driven during daylight hours.

The rules of the road for low-speed vehicles are the same as they are for automobiles. It is illegal for the driver to drink and drive their low speed vehicle. It is also illegal to drive a low speed vehicle while under the influence. If a person is caught drinking and driving they can arrested and charged with a DUI.

If an underage and unlicensed driver is involved with an accident while driving the low speed vehicle, their parents would be held responsible for the damages that they caused. Since a child won’t be listed as an approved operator on the owner’s liability insurance policy, the parents would need to cover the cost of the damage out of their own pocket
