Andy Gwaltney - Homewood City Council Ward 1

Good morning Ward 1. I hope this post finds you well and having a great week. I wanted to follow up on some of the items from my email over the past few weeks. I greatly appreciate the feedback from the neighborhood about the OLS rezone. The vast majority of responses preferred something other than a parking lot on the property. The outcome was an approval of the re-zone from C-1 to I-2. While I voted against this item based on neighbor feedback I do appreciate the improved landscaping proposed. While it was inferred by the applicant that the public could use the lot there was no binding commitment made.

An additional item mentioned in the emails was the Christmas Parade. The link shared had an error in it, please see the revised link below. The Mayor and Parks leadership came up with a creative plan that is mindful in making sure the public is kept safe during the pandemic. The format has changed to a drive through parade so folks can stay in their car. While no candy will be exchanged this year we hope to be back next year with twice the candy!

🚦EWD Crossing Guard Update:
Some of you may have heard that our long-time crossing guard, Mr. Edwards, has retired. Over the last few weeks of walking my children to school it has become even more apparent how important Mr. Edwards job was! He will be missed!

I’m pleased to report that after reaching out to HPD and Mayor McClusky there will now be an officer in the morning and afternoon!

You may have noticed the decorative planters and hanging baskets around town. These, along with our native tree-planting program, are part of an emphasis on beautification that we have worked towards over the last several years. In the coming years, I plan to expand both of these to new areas of our City. We have also been working on ideas to add green space to The Curve on 18th Street and SoHo Plaza at City Hall. Looking good, Homewood!
