Hominy Senior Citizens

Hominy Senior Citizens In 1965, the United States Congress passed the Older Americans Act in an effort to keep senior citizens in their own homes and out of nursing homes.

As the result of that act, Senior Nutrition sites were established across Oklahoma. Operating under the name of Hominy Senior Citizens, Inc., we incorporated in June 1984 as a non-profit corporation; although we first began serving Hominy in 1973. Our purpose has always been to provide a focal point for the development, promotion, and implementation of programs and services for older Americans. We

serve lunch five days each week to between 60 and 80 senior citizens, ages 60 and older. The meal is nutritionally balanced and well prepared by our dedicated staff. We serve seniors from all walks of life and ethnicities. Our program is not limited to only lunch, as those who care to stay are welcome to play cards, dominoes, work puzzles, use exercise equipment, watch TV or just relax in an atmosphere of air-conditioned or heated comfort. While we encourage voluntary contributions for meals, no one is turned away for lack of funds. We do not keep records of those who do or do not pay. For the past 40 years, we have utilized an abandoned school building much in need of repairs. This building leaks badly and has molded in numerous areas as a result. We have been given a more modern and safer building and hope to relocate in the near future. Before we can move into the new building, it must be made handicap accessible. Plumbing and wiring must be up to code to accommodate the freezers and stoves that are required for the facility. Bids on required work indicate we need $50,000 to complete the renovations and we have established a fund for this purpose. We welcome contributions of any amount to help us realize this $50,000 goal that will ensure we can operate in a safe and updated facility. Anyone interested in donating may contact Lora Dobbins, PO BOX 154, Hominy, OK 74035 or by calling 918.885.1221.

**Update from the Senior Center**

We wanted to let you know what we are doing during this time to protect our Seniors here at the Hominy Senior Center.

We have closed the dining room, so seniors enrolled in our programs can come and get a carry out meal each day.

Our meals consists of sandwiches or soup type meals that require as little dish washing as possible. If we have to wash any pots or pans, we first boil the water we use, per the guidelines from the CDC.

All meals are served in styrofoam cartons to avoid contamination from eating on regular dishware.

We are also providing this style of meal to our home bound seniors, along with bottled water supplied by donations to the city.

While we miss the social interaction our in-house dining provides to our seniors, we want to do everything we can during this time keep them safe.

**EMERGENCY SERVICES TO THE RESCUE**

Today, with help of Chief Coby Surritte HFD, Chief Matthew Foster HPD and Officer Mason Goode ONPD, we were able to deliver a hot meal for today and 4 shelf stable, nutrion approved box lunches to our homebound clients.

"Time and time again, the members of Hominy's Emergency Services come through for this community in times of need", said Director Lora Dobbins. "I'm so thankful to them for their help."

THE HOMINY SENIOR CENTER HAS A NEW HOME!

When the current health concerns have eased, and the Hominy Senior Center reopens to the public, Hominy's seniors will have a new place to gather.

Last week, movers began hauling the large refrigerators and equipment to the new Senior Center, located in the old Presbyterian Church Annex at 215 N. Price.

The Annex, donated to the City by the Presbyterian Church, for use as a new Senior Center, has undergone extensive renovations over the past five years. The renovations are funded by a grant from INCOG and overseen jointly by the City of Hominy and the Osage County Nutrition Program.

At this time it is not known when the Center will reopen to the public. Home bound meal delivery and curbside pick up service will continue to be offered until that time.

Anyone 60 years of age and over may call 918-885-2112 to sign up for curbside delivery and come by after 11:30 to pick up their meal.
