In 1965, the United States Congress passed the Older Americans Act in an effort to keep senior citizens in their own homes and out of nursing homes. As the result of that act, Senior Nutrition sites were established across Oklahoma.
Operating under the name of Hominy Senior Citizens, Inc., we incorporated in June 1984 as a non-profit corporation; although we first began serving Hominy in 1973. Our purpose has always been to provide a focal point for the development, promotion, and implementation of programs and services for older Americans.
We serve lunch five days each week to between 60 and 80 senior citizens, ages 60 and older. The meal is nutritionally balanced and well prepared by our dedicated staff. We serve seniors from all walks of life and ethnicities.
Our program is not limited to only lunch, as those who care to stay are welcome to play cards, dominoes, work puzzles, use exercise equipment, watch TV or just relax in an atmosphere of air-conditioned or heated comfort.
While we encourage voluntary contributions for meals, no one is turned away for lack of funds. We do not keep records of those who do or do not pay.
For the past 40 years, we have utilized an abandoned school building much in need of repairs. This building leaks badly and has molded in numerous areas as a result. We have been given a more modern and safer building and hope to relocate in the near future.
Before we can move into the new building, it must be made handicap accessible. Plumbing and wiring must be up to code to accommodate the freezers and stoves that are required for the facility. Bids on required work indicate we need $50,000 to complete the renovations and we have established a fund for this purpose.
We welcome contributions of any amount to help us realize this $50,000 goal that will ensure we can operate in a safe and updated facility. Anyone interested in donating may contact Lora Dobbins, PO BOX 154, Hominy, OK 74035 or by calling 918.885.1221.
